Yup, this right here is the route I usually take, with one exception: I prefer to turn on Harrison than on Washington. No busses, no delivery vehicles, bit less traffic. The last stretch right before Traveler is all pothole, though. That overpass is steeper than it looks!

And you're right about Berkeley and a bike lane: it IS a no-brainer for a connection with the 4th St. lane. But the Back Bay NIMBYs hated the proposal because of parking. Making Dartmouth a 2-way lane is a nice consolation prize, though

can understand your approach. this was filmed a while ago so not sure i recall EXACTLY the situation there waiting for the light. as much as i ride it evens out anyways, some lights are welcome breaks i tend to ride for HIIT exercise a lot, some take a while but it's very logical why (rox crossing) and some feel a bit like the lights aren't entirely precisely logical. either way, Boston Bike plays it safe

hey thanks for checking us out. where? was riding on it last night up to my ruggles/huskies zone and not sure i noticed anything. can tell you that the little band-aids aside the whole SWC should be paved liked the good stuff at Millennium and get colors/stripes/lines

That is a loooooong light. I'm surprised people don't just head on through when there are no cars around. Given the fairly light traffic (in this video, at least) seems like a 4-way stop would be sufficient. Or was this during a low traffic time?
@BostonBike
@BostonBike День назад
thank you for checking us out. there are some real long waits and yes cyclists and scooters and pedestrians blow them off all the time. we see a close call somewhere almost every time we ride so we follow all the traffic signals. there should be more cycling lights and intersections cleaned up for sure. this is in cambridge which generally is better than boston in terms of traffic signals and bike lanes. so in a nutshell, yes some seem like a real long time but we know from experience the lights are as such for a reason. also, learned how to edit out the dead space waiting in the videos and this one here was from 2023 i believe🚴🏻‍♂️

I've biked this route a bit but walked it a ton- the bike lane in the last block of longwood in your video is blocked with parked cars just about every time I've seen it :( The route gets so much ridership, it's a shame it isn't safer.

Building bike lanes is great, but it's going to take a long time to change the culture of motorists and cyclists and pedestrians to make it safer for everyone. Licensing cyclists might help although everyone hates that idea except pedestrians who have been hit. (I know I've posted this comment before, but it bears repeating. )
@BostonBike
@BostonBike 9 дней назад
Yes, it's tricky. Boston Bike is in favor of more and more not just bike lanes but permanent bus lanes, MASSIVE street improvements, and getting the mopeds off the streets and bike lanes WAY, WAY before demanding the cyclists add more gubamint red tape to their own lives. Good valid points you make no doubt. There are dangerous cycling behaviors and dangerous driving behaviors and the pedestrians can get better as well (this is from someone walking 20k steps/day btw).

There is something in the works! The dead end passage along the B&M draw bridge to North Point will get connected when a replacement draw bridge! Now we don’t know if that will be the first of second replacement yet. Also we are trying to open up a better passage across the Gilmore corridor space. The goal,is to create an independent cycle bridge from the Austin St lots across to Morgan Ave in Cambridge so Charlestown has a better pathway into Cambridge. Keep in mind Rutherford Ave will have a cycle track on its north side and the goal is to offer access from it as well so both the Everett multi-use bridge into Draw Seven park as well as Somerville have a clean shot into both Boston Core and Cambridge! We still have one piece still being worked on passage across Alford St this will either be a fly over (not what I would want) or an under bridge passage. There is a few technical issues on that with the current bridge, but the bridge maybe getting replaced! As that pesky thing called climate change is raising the sea level! So the Alford St bridge might be getting a rebuild. As long as it doesn’t flood us with more traffic and is safer for both people and bikers!

@old-wise-one4473

Good news very soon!! But the harbor side of the bridge is missing the added connections down to the river (HarborWalk) on both sides so the larger quantity of walkers (Freedom Trail) have safer passage down from Hull St to the HarborWalk across the bridge and then down via Charles River Ave/RiverWalk onward to the Navy Yard and the USS Constitution.

The path out to Lexington has stop signs for those (cyclists) on the path, but at every single intersection, the Massholes on the crossing roads insist on stopping and waiting for the vehicles with the stop signs. Massholes operate by non-existent rules of the road and refuse to obey the real rules. I've also seen idiots on bicycles who go into trances and drift into the paths of those on the other side of the path. I was on a group ride with one and, after he ran somebody off the other side of the path (and heard lots of swearing), I asked him what happened, and he said he had no recollection of it A cycling advocate (John Allen? McAllen? -Something like that.) spent a lot of time and effort getting the RMV to fix all of the mistakes in the Mass. driving manual that apparently resulted from the author(s) being incapable of getting it through their thick skulls that bicycles are vehicles. [Lots of phrasing like "...bicycles and other pedestrians..."; "...vehicles and bicycles..."] Police departments in Mass. apparently STILL teach kids to ride on the wrong side of the road. [All of the adults I've ever asked insist that bicycles should be on the left.] Most states, when considering the rules for bicycles on sidewalks, differentiate between large people on large bikes and small people (kids) on lightweight (e.g., PlaySkool) bikes and trikes. The large ones would kill pedestrians if they were to ride on the sidewalk and are fine on the road (approx. same speed; easily visible; if on the correct side, closing speed is low). Little ones are no harm to pedestrians and are too low to be seen on the road. Massachusetts, of course, gets it completely wrong and distinguishes between sidewalks in built-up areas and sidewalks in the sticks. They did something similar with tinted windows on cars. Police don't like extreme tinting (because there might be somebody with a gun inside the car when they pull somebody over). So, sane states have a limit on the amount of tinting. [Glass must pass x% of visible light.] Mass, of course, gets it wrong and bans AFTERMARKET tinting. [I assume that the other states have test jigs similar to the ones that they used to have for adjusting the aim of sealed-beam headlights (which Mass. also didn't use, opting for the inaccurate method of drawing lines on a board)... I've done Cycling the Erie Canal three times (and plan to do it some more). It's well-designed, and the organized ride is well run. ["Just like New York"]. I avoid paths in Mass. because everything having anything to do with transportation is done so incompetently.

@@BostonBike Unless Mass. eliminates all grade crossings, cyclists can't go a decent distance without having to deal with the issue of Massholes who don't know the rules of the road. As far as I can tell, the state started teaching NEW drivers the rules in the late 1980s, so young drivers are much better than older ones. [As things stand now, we'll have to wait for all of the old drivers to die off before Mass. stops being an outlier (accident rate 80% higher than the other 49 states, which are all about the same). In New York, when they changed a rule, they would put ads. on TV to make sure that ALL drivers (well, those with a TV) would be made aware. Mass. eliminated the three-people-through-a-stop-sign rule in 1981, but never publicized it, and there are STILL drivers who think it's still in effect (43 years later). I've noticed that Massholes seem to be unable to recognize the lines on the roads. In college, I remember learning about (cruel?) experiments on cats in which kittens are raised with restricted views in which they could see only vertical stripes. When released, they could "see" just fine, but their visual cortexes couldn't recognize anything except vertical stripes. I suspect something similar happened to Massholes. They can "see" the lines on the roads, but they don't recognize them as having any significance. I'd like to see some experiments on Massholes.
