Through an easy wizard, a small set of parameters has to be entered. With these parameters robots calculates where the workpiece needs to go. The robots moves to the calculated position and when in position, the robot gives a signal to the machine to close the vise. Upon confirmation from the machine that the vise is closed, the robot lets go of the part and moves away.
I was there today for the annual air cannon competition. Before we started shooting the cannons, we got a tour. I saw this piece of machinery and it was awesome. It's cool to think that a state like Iowa was the first to install something like this instead of California, New York, or another richer state.
