We are told from childhood that if we don't learn from history, we are bound to repeat the mistakes of the past. We are also admonished to appreciate geography, so we can know about the other passengers on spaceship earth. On the Vanntage point, host Barry Vann takes those admonishments seriously and offers a unique perspective on past events that impact present-day American society. The Vanntage Point covers topics like climate and weather, family history, culture, natural disasters, the geography of ideas and belief systems, and historical political and economic theories and policies that have affected subsequent generations.
New Madrid sits on top of the Reelfoot Rift Zone. It's an ancient failed rift of unknown age that was present when the Oauchita Mountain Range was uplifted to join the Appalachian Chain. Geologists believe that region traveled over the Bermuda Hot Spot which made that section rise in elevation. The Oauchitas eroded rapidly so that raised area was more deeply eroded when the continent moved away from the hot spot. The land dropped in elevation due to cooling off to create the deep Mississippi Ebayment. The rift valley and the ebayment filled eith sea water to become an extension of the Gulf of Mexico. The Ebayment became filled with thousands of feet of sediment which is believed to be causing the earthquakes by pushing down on the slip faults inside the rift valley. BTW, New Madrid was the first town to receive Federal Disaster Assistance when President Jefferson directed Congress to provide money to the residents to rebuild their town on higher ground away from the river.
Would it be possible for you to point me in the direction of the surname corn. On the Corn side we have many generations going back all in North Carolina. Farthest back I have been able to find is John L Corn 1846 to 1911. Married Harriet E. Buckner 1852 to 1911 Parents of ...... O. Lemuel Corn 1873 to 1929. Married Estie L. Meyers 1887 to 1974 Parents of ...... Ellie J Corn
Ellie, given the dates that you provided, we can rule out a Slovakian origin. That leaves us with an English origin for one who worked with hand mills. Thanks for watching and writing! Barry Vann
I am Melungeon. My DNA contains Scottish, German, Irish, and African. Didn’t the Carmel Indians live in Highland County, Ohio? In the town of Carmel. (Pronounced Carmuhl.) They had Kentucky descendants, IIRC, but lived in Ohio. Many with the surname Gibson, for example. I had a grandmother who might refer to someone as “dark Irish,” so I’m glad you pointed that out. Most of my red headed relatives were of German descent, not Irish.
@BarryVann your not irsh Scott are you it's a tribe name there other sub parts of the Celtic tribes from that area. It should be called the Sea of isles. Not The island sea .oh McDonald's and McCloud come from The Isle of sky.
Darcy, I appreciate you for watching and writing, but half of the stuff you mention is news to me. I am a geographer (PhD University of Glasgow), so I’m not just an American who woke up one day and decided to do videos on Scotland and Ireland. Your writing reads like English is not your first language. So, what’s your point?
@BarryVann OK what did you study re so did Irish Scott mix with a Hebrew called Negro, something tribe. Tell me what the last name McMillan means Where does saint Columbia, come from.
George Fraser Black is the author of the Surnames of Scotland. I mention him as a source that I use. Black is an English word for the color. The person named Black had dark features, but the surname is found in Scotland, England, and Ireland.
My grandmother called a bag a pok.her last name was Pendergrass. They lived in white co. Tennessee. They also had buttermilk and cornbread. I have churned many a jug of buttermilk for my grandmother.
Why would Jews come to Ireland in the 4th century? If they did get there, they were few in number. At the end of the day, what does that have to do with King James and the Ulster Plantation? What does the Isle of Mull have to do with the story? Why are nearly all of your words misspelled?
Mull sea it effects canada more who started canada. Tutor are French weish ceiltic and Stuart's r french ceiltic oh Smith are the anglo Irish macmillan was Prince of Ireland dose he know oh some Stuart's are Tutors
What's up with the Mull Sea? Have you Google Mull Sea? What does that have to do with the North Channel of the Irish Sea? Did you just pull that name out the air?
Have you heard of sir Thomas West who was a baron to king Edward 11 i think. He is related to me. I have the papers that show this. It kind of cool. I just wanted to know if I have him with the right king or not. Thanks again Gina
Gina, I am not sure. Edward II died about 900 years ago. You would have 8,000,000 ancestors alive at that time. Even with a paper trail, I would not put much credence in a connection. I know of several different surnames of men who carry the same Y chromosome that I inherited from Dennis Vann. Momma’s baby, daddy’s maybe.
Along the way between Gettysburg and Appomattox, GAC was awarded Brevets in Major, Lt. Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier and Major General! He’s the youngest American to be promoted to Major General in US history
To add to your excellent presentation, a Depression in US happened in 1873, so Gold was a boon to the Government and economy- BTW, Custer was promoted to Brigadier General June 29th 1863, not Brevet/ Brevet Major General of Volunteers 10/19/1864 GAC was NOT a Mad Man! He was a very aggressive fearless leader of Cavalry His tactic of dividing his command was SOP so Indians wouldn’t scatter
Lester Flatt and earl Scruggs did the music for the tv show the Beverly hillbillies. Lester Flatt lived down the street from my kids grandparent in Sparta Tennessee Bluegrass USA. Gina Bumbalough
My great great grandfather John Burr West went to school with Colt younger .I have a story he wrote about this. I thought this was real cool. Thanks for your show. Gina
Thanks for the insult. Why don’t you do some research, excrement brain? It’s called history, and I earned my PhD at Glasgow. What the f have you ever done, Martin the genius bigot?
Where do you think my ancestors lived in the 1600s? They left in the 1700s because they had the stones to do it. Why don’t you complain about third world immigrants taking over the island? Here’s another American who wishes you a warm jihad holiday.
Like your show. I have a question. My cuz told me that we are kin to a Scottish king. My last name is Underwood. I think she said that it was king name Bruce. I was wondering if you might know any thing about this. I would love to know. Thanks you. Gina from Bluegrass USA Sparta Tennessee
Melungeon actually explains so much, from the DNA, to the family comments. Even the weird skin blotches, which are typically, africian in nature. except i'm mostly pale.
I have looked into both of my sides of the family of Clark, Brandon and Berk. I understand why so my Irish and Scots settled in the south because it looks a lot like Ireland. The Brandon and Clarks have been here before the Civil War. The Berks didn't come over until 1833.
I have neighbors with the surname Skinner and Board. My line is Scottish ( McDonald, Graham, Cunningham, Wallace,) Irish-- Murphy, Spanish, Welsh--James, Native American through Tecumseh, English, Polish, German, French, Dutch and French Hugenot.
Keith, Mayle was the name of a form boss of mine. Despite his claim that it was a native America name, it's origin is either Irish or German. Male is Irish, but Maile is German. Harrison claims that Mayle is an alternate spelling of Male.
There are nearly 1000 tornadoes in the USA every year, and hurricanes still strike the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic seaboard. We just have more ways of predicting them and getting the word out.
@BarryVann no the Galviston hurricane destroied the entire city. The Huston Hurricane in 1929 drowned people in second floor apartments. Hurricane Hazel made landfall in SC 1955. Devastated a swath all the way north into Canada. Killed 34 people in Toronto and did the most properly damage of any storm in Canada!
I did the 23andme DNA test. The most interesting part was the list of relatives. I examined all 1500 profiles of my relatives and accourding to their y chromosomes and x chromosomes, they were a mix of European, Afican, Native America and Middle Eastern. Most of my relatives come from NC and VA some from GA. But let me tell you that in many cases, the dna profiles said they were 100 percent European, but their Y or X chromosomes showed African or Native American. And none of them knew anything about their ancestry. When I told my cousins that they have native ancesty, they didn't believe me.
"n 1667, a number of Scots were forced to leave Scotland following the Pentland Rising (Rullion Green) in 1666. In the Dundonald records, a David Poe in Polkelly, on a farm bordering Fenwick and Stewarton, seven miles from Irvine. On November 21, 1666 he was with others, declared an outlaw by the King’s Herald. On December 4, 1666, this proclamation was read at the Market Cross in the parish church of Irvine. David Poe and others became fugatives, hunted covenanters, hiding in Ayrshire. They were never arrested, but the King had them tried in absence on evidence of witnesses and sentenced them to be hanged. David Poe escaped to Ireland. On October 1, 1667, the King’s pardon was granted to all who had taken part in the late rebellion, but with special exception of David Poe.
I know they always say it was just regional but the world wide data shows its region involved Europe , Africa ,North America, Central America, South America, Australia and Antarctica. Yes so it was regional just like you say!
Thank you for your presentation-- a Fact that Custer marched his men 78 miles in 24 hours and went directly into Battle is not a decision of a wise leader graduate of WestPoint- and to send Reno into Battle with only 100 bullets per soldier and 50 of those were on a horse pouch that could not be easily got to - horses dont cooperate - Custer has no immediate idea of where the packtrain is at. Custer sent Benteen left oblique on a wild goose chase batting rough terrain on exhausted horses. Many of the horses in Custer outfit balked and simply refused to go because of exhaustion- Several Scout said their horses refused to go. Scouts reported several soldiers were off their horses and kicking their horse in the belly to try get them moving. Not to mention the men themselve were in no condition to fight being completely exhausted as well with only permitted short naps in the ladt 30 hours. Boston returned to the packtrain for a different horse most likely because the horse he was on was spent. Custer brought several horses along for himself to rotate on. No doubt Custer had great moments in the Civil War - LBH was a complete blunder on Custer Part. In the Newspaper archives for months before LBH story's were ran relating Sitting Bull threat ' I have 8000 warriors and if the army comes near me we will fight' So everyone in that era knew that Sitting Bull had a force of warriors and would fight. Once Custer showed his presence to the Indians it became a mass running battle. The army came in firing on the villiage and alot of the Indians remembered what happened at Sand Creek. Hostilities were high and it was over quick with most things happening in unison as 1000s of warriors swarming the entire Custer area on fresh horses- Calhoun fell some soldiers made it to Keogh but all the while Keogh was under assault - the stragglers from Keogh/Calhoun ran to Last Stand Hill and Last stand hill was as well under assault all the while and the last ran to Deep Ravine and it was over and it was quick. -- As for Reno and Benteen- Sitting Bull said "We have killed some soldiers let the others go" so Reno Benteen were harassed until camp was moved - the Indians may not have even known Terry was close by - Sitting Bull never got the memo
The gender confusion today people are asking when did men stop acting like men? Having lived through the last half of the last century I realize that the answer to that question is another question. When did women stop acting like women? Remember it was Eve who sold Adam of partaking the Apple.
Both of my parents were from Hancock Co., TN. At one time, I was related to 75% of the county and some of these relatives included Melungeons. My 4th great grandfather, Drury Lawson was a neighbor and friend of Vardy Collins and his brother Morgan Collins. These men were known as the heads of the Melungeons of Hancock Co., TN. My DNA reveals 70% British, 12% French and 3% Jewish. What is curious is that I am more British than the average British citizens of today by 10%.
Ron, most of the people in southern Appalachia are more British Isles than the folks there today. I am Scottish (47%), English (35%), Welsh (7%), Irish (7%), Scandinavian (4%), and a trace of Native blood that doesn't rise to 1%. My great grandmother was a Collins from East Tennessee. We might be distant cousins. Kind regards, Barry Vann

I’m an American in the state of Texas. My Irish ancestors came here in 1658 to Virginia. I can trace my people back to County longford Ireland on my dad’s side to about 1470 . Our last name is Ferrell and my grandfather that came here in 1658 was captain Hubbard Hubert Ferrell who got shot in the stomach while defending Jamestown during Bacons Rebellion in 1676 . He was under the command of Sr William Berkeley. My question is what Might his Religious affiliation be seeing that he married an Anglican ? He probably was not a catholic right , even though he is Irish ? I’m a Reformed Baptist 1689 guy myself
Michael, Irish Catholics came during the Potato Famine in the late 1840s. The Church of Ireland, like the Church of Scotland in the 17th century, were essentially Anglicans with bishops; they answered to the monarch. Jamestown worship was Anglican.
@@BarryVann that makes some sense yes , but they left Ireland in 1658 near the end of Cromwells campaign which makes me think that they might have been fleeing Longford do to the Roman Catholic rebellion
