Don’t know if you experienced the full force of this storm but living in the Heathrow area it was honestly insane. Closest thing to a derecho we’ll probably ever see in the UK. One of the best daytime storms I’ve ever seen and without a shadow of a doubt the best storm of 2022.

It was a crazy storm, big bowing QLCS, although I narrowly dodged the strongest damaging wind gusts. I saw reports of a tornado in the next county over though!! The storm was so fast moving too, this lightning strike came just minutes after the first distant rumbles on the horizon.

That double snap from the strike at 0:20 is chilling. I’d imagine the first one was all the electronics getting cooked, and the 2nd was the echo of the physical object the bolt struck.

I look at the lightning strike data on meteologix.com/ie/lightning which uses data from the global lightning detection network (I believe blids.de for my region). The sensor network can determine polarity & peak current of individual lightning strokes, this one happened to be +25kA.

0:21 First time I've clearly heard _two_ upward streamers associated with a strike. A weak one nearby, and a very strong pop heard half a second later, so some 500 feet away.
@Tstorms
@Tstorms 3 месяца назад
That second strike hit a powerline about a mile away, which was directly connected to the lines leading to my house. The snaps are from overvoltages in the distribution lines, and both come from where the power lines terminate, at my house - my neighbours (as you guessed, about 500ft away!). My guess is a little arc in the lightning arrestor. The strike was around -40kA, so the leaders would need to come within 45-110m or so of the powerlines to induce a streamer according to striking distance calculations by Love 1973 & Wang et. al. 2013. The closest leaders were about 700-800m away, so not close enough. However, that final strike, if you listen very carefully at the instant it happens, there is a much louder crack before the thunder begins - I timed this crack to be about 12-15m away, the same distance as the power line. The leaders from this flash were less than 100m away, and the peak current was -53.8kA, so I believe that one might genuinely have the sound of a positive streamer captured!
