Hot and Cold is a Maine-based home improvement program, hosted by Tom Gocze. Though produced in Maine, we believe that others will find our shows helpful and informative. Hot and Cold is currently being rebroadcast on public access channels across the country.
Tom hosts Hot and Cold live on the radio on WVOM 103.9 Bangor, ME and WVQM 101.3 Augusta, ME every Saturday morning from 8-10am with Professor Dick Hill!
I would like to know how the pex tubing, located under the radiators, would or have held up if they were to get in the way of a overly aggressive vacuum cleaner operator? Have you ever had to use some sort of stronger casing or cover device rather than the cosmetic white tubing covers? Would you suggest locating the tubing inside of the wall under the baseboard and sheetrock?
Paul Brogton Hi Paul! Glad you're enjoying the shows. The reason we're uploading to RU-vid is to bring Hot and Cold to the masses who may not live in an area where the show is being rebroadcast. These are actually older episodes from 2006, we just have been really bad about uploading to RU-vid consistently. WVOM started uploading the Hot and Cold radio show as a podcast late last year, so you can listen to previously aired shows whenever you'd like! www.wvomfm.com/pages/20679749.php?
Do you order your PEX parts or have a local supplier? I used Uponor Propex in the past, it uses an expansion tool with a memory ring to make the seal...while most systems use a copper crimp connection. Do you have a preference?
This was a fantastic and informative, the eldely gentleman had thought so much through. The wood dryness test ive carried out myself in uk they recommend logs to be below 20 moisture level and weathered for one year. I have found stored in my shed windtight about 3-4 months and i can achieve this. Wood burns fine very little sparks. Outdoors just took too long using a simple tarp over the top. I was also glad he took into carbon monoxide into consideration, i have mentioned it several times to utubers who made their own stoves for the intentions of inside tents. They dont seem convinced, ahh ive not had a problem before. I know from experience its a silent killer, my own home was burn to the ground and we escaped with our lifes only just due to the bravery and courage of the fire service. Anyway job well done the refrigerator was interesting too. We waste enough as it is. Regards nick
Hello i just wanted to say thank you for making these videos i just found out about these heat pump water heaters and i gotta say its pretty interesting stuff. Anyways I was just wondering would it be possible to use this technology in combination with radiators in order to heat your house? It seems like an interesting idea but it sounds to me like it would ultimately not be possible because of some perpetual motion machine defeating physics issue. It sounds a little to good to be true to use heat you generated from the heat pump to produce heat that will be used to power the heat pump. Or hey maybe i just figured out the key to the perpetual motion machine problem lol! Sorry if that was confusing...
Having trouble buying twin wall poly carbonate, the crating charge is about 200.00 dollars plus shipping. I am located in McCormick South Carolina. Can you direct me to someone who will sell one sheet I will even pick it up. thank you Jim
Tom and Dick, My name is Alex Johnson, I am a inventor. I have found that using lava rock above the fire as a high temperature filtration media works extremely well. all the smoke passes through rocks which act as a natural catalytic converter. I am posting 1 of my videos that show how well lava rock works at burning up smoke that passes through. alex < width="560" height="315" src="ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9S0_8a4_kEA.html" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></>
Hi Tom. Can you please tell me where you are getting Mills Pride cabinets from ? I have a cabinet door that I need to replace and I was told they went out of business in 2009. THANKS !
pratzert There are other companies that produce very similar products. IT really sucks they are no longer available. They were not the highest quality, but they were way better than what is being sold as in stock at HD now! Tom
Interesting research. It's good to see people testing this stuff. What would be wrong with... a) For fin attachment: Using a thermally conductive caulk/epoxy instead of a thermally insulating one b) For the plastic bag: Using a hydrophillic coating on the inside of the plastic to ensure full coverage c) Improvement on full wetted plate: Filling the entire cavity between a double-pane of glass and a lower black plate. (Not between the panes of glass but below both of them.) Make the separation about 1/8th inch even top to bottom or as it accepts heat the best. Could either fill from the bottom up or adapt to cycle all the air out before operation.
Todd McKissick Thermal conducting materials are generally more expensive with limited results in this use. I have shied away from plastic bags since they are apt to fail. Would like to have time and money to test them more.Glass might work, but the weight is a big issue. Tom
I've spent 2 days trying to get some info on installing my own radiant floor heating and THIS is by far the most simple and thorough video on RU-vid I have found. THANK YOU. PLEASE SHOW MORE !!
Nice technology with the tanks and solar panels. I would be a little concerned with asthetics on the panels with the plastic down here in Massachusetts. But I understand the utility of the polycarbonate double wall panels. I have some on a greenhouse shed that are 14 years old and look fine. Regarding the tank technology - it looks like you are using vinyl liners instead of the more common EPDM, why? I do like your modular technology for the tank structure as the 36 inch door is the major limitation for bulk thermal storage in homes. Well done with the video and your business efforts. I will look in from time to time to see if we might do something for mutual benefit.
Tom, great video & sense of humor! Question: What exactly are those 2 feet aluminium "trims" you used to cover the back of the insulation? I can see they have different color back and front. Thanks & cheers!
You mention a 3 Amp draw with the clamp-on ammeter, but since it's 220V that would be 3 Amps PER LEG wouldn't it? So that would be 1400W not 700W as mentioned. Still a savings, but not quite as lucrative as mentioned.
This is a very good video this week. I just purchased a pellet stove it is being shipped from North Caroline I have never used one I purchased is a 50,000 BTU unit my home. 1500 ft.² I'm wondering will this be enough. To warm a two-story house.what are your thoughts it usually gets no more than about 20° here on the winter.
I've used this Toyotomi for a radiant floor and domestic water since 1999. Tom is correct, this unit uses very little kerosene, even in Maine. Recently (2014) the "warning light" has been coming on and the water heater will stop heating (runs normally over 25 seconds). Power down/up usually resets warning light, allowing normal operation. Maintenance manual suggests cleaning fuel filter, cleaning "Flame sensor" and to "empty burning preventive electrode." I will try these maintenance items in a couple days. Anyone else ever have this issue? Thanks for the video Tom.
Any results on the fin testing? I would love you to test one of the fins orientated so that the flat face was towards the sun, just to see exactly what difference there was in having the pipe and tape exposed to uv rays. Would also love you to experiment with different width fin to see if there was an optimum size or formula that could be applied? Keep up the fantastic work. Jim from Scotland. :)
I am thinking about replacing my OUTDOOR tank with a ROTH. Here is central NJ it gets pretty cold in winter. What do you think about an outdoor set-up with the ROTH
am finding out that the way this box was made their are a few different solar application that with little modification can be used for solar hot air also. thanks again for sharing
I have a few questions I now the glazing is a lot lighter but is it better than glass? I really like the way you built your box. I plan on doing it the same way but on mine to cut down on labor am making mine 8' tall and 10' long so I only have to 2 instead of building 5 or 6. it being so long do you think it will keep the rigidly. like the one you built?
am back I like the project my idea is to build a box just like yours but making it 8 foot tall and 10 feet long do you think it will still be ridged? I want to use 2 pieces putting them horizontal (4x10 sheets) any in put would be great. thank you
a manifold for domestic water uses a lot more pipe than a traditional loop system. the plastic manifold really scares me. I do like a brass manifold for but the only time we use them would be for radiant heating. have you seen the new copper rings that use one crimper for all size pipe the rings are a little more expensive but I think it is worth it.
You made a point of allowing the glazing to move, then you put screws trough it? Would not that clamp it down and stop it from expanding, now being mechanically connected to the frame?
You did not read the Viega Manual that came with your ManaBloc Manifold Viega pex tubing can not be heat formed. The manual instructs you to cut out the KINKED TUBING and INSTALL A REPAIR COUPLING. ref: Viega Pex Water Systems Installation Manual IM-PF 1012 520709 Page 26 . Uponor , PEX A, can be heat formed because it expands.
