I might not do things the "right" way but I get things done...well most of the time. And remember, when watching videos on RU-vid you might wince but you feel no real pain, unlike me, so use some common sense before trying anything stupid enough to be worthy of the internet.

Although I'm a car mechanic myself, sometimes i prefer to pay the extra labour to a car repair shop to do a specialised job instead doing it myself and costing more or even worse fix it again. Last spring i send my sister's car to a car repair shop for gearbox. They found that rare gearbox rebuilded, the gearbox works like new. If i did the job alone it was 300euro for a used one in unknown condition. The rebuilded gerbox 400euro plus 130 Labour.

I agree with this mechanic. Unfortunately, many of us have to drive to work to our low wage jobs. But still have to afford to keep our vehicles up and running. So we end up finding other more affordable ways of getting it done. But its not always the best. If the person doing the work is not at least basically competent.

The real problem is that a professional shop charges $400 to change a tierod, which only takes them 30 minutes. And the part is $35. This drives people towards trying to do it themselves. More expensive than a dentist.

Too many mechanics are scumbags that want to charge me 3x retail cost on parts, stupid prices on labor, then go and conveniently forget to reconnect one or two things they shouldn't have been anywhere near, hoping to net more business down the road. @@Wesley-fk7ef I just did a ford 500 with a customer replacement ultima that overcharged and ran the battery down, customer supplied a TYC from rock auto that overcharged at an even higher voltage and ran the battery down…a lot of different brands use the same suppliers for internal parts like the regulator. That truck would probably be a computer controlled alternator so it need to be on a diagnostic machine to rule out a problem with the vehicle, otherwise three alternators in a row is not unheard of…the most I’ve seen is nine.

Well it is wise to get someone who truly knows what they're doing but also fair. Too many out here are taking advantage of people too often. Just for a geater core hose change which is a couple of pressure clamps and a few click in ends you simply push on (not sure what those are called exactly) were going to charge $400-$500. This job only took me a couple hours tops with filling and burping the coolant system included. The actual work of changing the hose took about 20-30 minutes tops. Too many people are too willing to take advantage of a situation. I would have paid a couple hundred but that is rediculous. The book will give an hour or more for things that take less than half an hour to do as well and this isnt even counting a 100% mark up just for getting the part delivered from right down the road from the shop, regardless, picking up the phone to order a part shouldn't have much tacked on much less sometimes even over twice what it costs. Still a good message here, hopefully people will be more careful as I deal with the same in construction people doing things they have no clue about causing more problems as well hazards. Two sides.

The problem is that savings is more then just 20 bucks for example I just put a new alternator in my truck the alternator only cost me 228 dollars if I had a mechanic do it it would of cost between 500 to 600 dollars after labor and god only knows what other feeds. I will agree though that you really need to make sure you know what you’re doing before taking on your own jobs do a lot of research.
