Look to the early church, my brother in Christ. This is a practice that dates back all the way to the beginnings. St. Dismas is not dead, he is with our Lord Jesus Christ. According to the book of Hebrews, we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. This refers to the great heroes who have gone before. Read Hebrews 11 and 12. As for your claim that veneration is for Christ alone, I would agree only if you would change that word to "worship". Veneration just means respect, honor. Do you honor your father and your mother? We are bound to do so since it is written in the Law of Moses which Christ did not come to abolish but to fulfill. Veneration and worship are very different. Study the history. Learn your roots. Don't just accept what your pastor says as the truth, why is he an authority? Why are you?
