In 1999 I discovered her book at my university's library while looking for inspiration for a photography research paper and I've been in love with her work ever since. Admittedly she was an intriguing artist and person but I didn't know until the end of the book that she had died and by then her work had already influenced me and the aesthetics of my photography as well as the lens (her lens) of the world.
"The judges had it fixed for Harlow, C'mon darling look at her makeup, it was terrible.." lol not a real life Crystal Labeija scenerio.. oh how times have changed lol
Without question a stellar film by Griffith and everyone involved. Some tense moments on that ice flow filmed in the freezing cold of the White and Connecticut rivers. No CGI and no stunt doubles. Gish and Barthelmess actually performed the ice scenes. Thanks to the Museum of Modern Art for preserving this wonderful film. Thanks Kino Lorber for posting.
Someone sent the OG video to me today and I'd never seen it before surpringly. I obviously got lost in a rabbit hole and ended up here. The ending made me cry. What an amazing human he was. RIP to the goat.
You living with your grandparents? Yeah , I'm independant now, I moved out of my mothers house a week ago.😂 I knew this was going to be good after that. 😂
Too new-age. It's the Oedipal complex, the mother and father that will not let you go when puberty occurs and it is time to be initiated into adulthood by the shaman. See Harry Potter. The trash compactor scene in Star Wars represents a womb. The serpent in the water is the umbilical cord pulling the hero back into the womb. The hero's journey is the struggle against the devouring mother who prevents the hero from going on his adventure, from being taken by the shaman (wizard) into the wilderness, the rite of passage. Star wars is about the continuous struggle against the mother complex. The threshold guardian is the mother who will not set you free. Vader represents the castrating father that Oedipus wants to kill. The father that stands between you and the mother/girlfriend. The serpent in the garden represents puberty, eating of the forbidden fruit can get you killed if you are hebrew woman who loses her virginity. They were executed. The serpent says you will not die but you will have the knowledge of the gods, the knowledge of sex. The serpent represents the transformation of puberty because the snake loses its skin.
This movie is disgusting. There is nothing literally there than x-rated scenes after a x-rated scenes. This movie does not have a plot, there is no depth in the movie. After 15 minutes of watching, you have pretty much seen the whole movie and you can move on and watch something else. Whom is this movie addressed to? If someone wants to watch something like that, they could do it in some other websites where everything would be shown as well. Pointless junk.
I guess it is not hard to understand the Chinese communist party holds the Dalai Lama a threat is because they want to control Buddhism, they also have their own Catholic Priests they try to put out there, of course they are not properly ordained by the Roman Catholic Church but they don't' want the local folks to know that.
Great and informative interview like usual really interested that Frank mentioned the victors the columbia move he talked about i love 60s movies like that imprint just announced synanon with chuck connors eartha kitt etc.. and banning with Robert Wagner and jill st john which were 2 longtime obscure 60s films that people were kinda waiting for Kino has done a great job on ones like that too fitzwilly with dick van dyke and the oscar with tony bennett come to mind. Legendary in the way that people knew about them had really good casts but were not really seen much..
At [49:53], the proper explanation of Satt-Chit-Ānanda is: Rapture (3rd) is the only universal way of knowledge, since consciousness (2nd) in all forms is limited, and the ultimate truth (1st) is by definition unreachable.
Frank, I think I know what you're thinking about at 40:03. I was glad to see you got a thank-you note in the credits. Bit of a tricky question but you handled it well. Keep doing your thing Kino is one of my favorite labels for its diverse selection.
As to the comments about the spines and the art you use in the Kino releases, I like to hunt down original art on movies off the interwebs, and print the ones I like and put them into the box. Not that I don't like the art you use on Kino releases, but quite often there are multiple, completely different posters and other art I like. So I do it myself!
One I picked up last week on Blu is SHOCK TREATMENT, the 1981 "not a sequel, but an equal" musical from the ROCKY HORROR bunch. It was out on Arrow a few years ago (that's the one I got), and went out of print. The one I got was $55.00, but that was actually a rather inexpensive listing. I am happy, but since it appears to be unavailable anywhere, would that be a Kino possibility? It was released by Fox in 1981 and on DVD, again, by Fox, a number of years ago, but I'm not sure who holds the rights these days. Hope it's not Disney. Just a thought.
These episodes, along with Carl Sagan's original Cosmos, seriously changed my life. Nice that these amazing shows are at least, very slightly Upscaled and with a new updated Intro... and free. Cool. The Old Intro should be a bonus. It's great too.
SHANE 4K 👌👌👌👌 I watched it at the academy museum in Los Angeles with George Steven’s jr and Christopher Nolan introducing and discussing the film! Can’t wait to see it on 4k because the fm on the bug screen was amazing.
Not sure about that. Criterion is better regarding technical quality and supplement packages generally, but Kino smokes them in breadth of titles. I think they're both good!
Thanks Frank & Alicia for the chat. Frank, any chance at all for a release of Robert Altman’s HEALTH? To the best of my knowledge it has never gotten a home video release of any kind. Not great Altman but that cast and it’s a good middle tier Altman.
I wonder how Poland who are last conservative and powerful country in western Europe made this, and moreover how this film won. Shame on you (any)festival jury.
Many veterans of the ALB ended up being key players in the OSS (the predecessor to the CIA) and helped the Allies conduct guerrilla warfare in countries like Italy. Milt was one of them.
