One of my biggest problems with the game is that all those great miniatures hardly gets used. I mean they look soo good and then you end up playing lots of stupid bent cards on the minimap battles. And maybe 1-2 real fights.
Great video! I would recommend that you try the PC game it's really fun. The best version of the game is to get horn of the abyss expansion. There is online multiplayer with simultanious turns, also there are 2k players online daily. Besides that campaings are really fun and there are great single scenarios since game features map editor and communitiy makes wonderful maps e.g the devil is in the details map
This was a very nice review, taking in consideration all the aspects of the game! Thx! We enjoy our copy of the game as well, and looking forward for the new campaign for the upcoming 3 expansions! :)
No miniatures ever touch my table unless they are painted. It drives some people crazy because it sometimes can take a few month or two until we can play a game. I winced when I saw you using yours out of the box. You mentioned OCD, but you left the most glaring thing
Dont use the normal Green stuff puddy for these small cracks. Use the greenstuff thats in a color plastic thingy and brush it on the mini. Will look better on these ones like the dragon. The cracks so small and it will be easier, smoother and look better =) And for the rulebook, yeah sure everything must be there. But google rulebook updates that comes in pdf. All boardgame have these =) And its very handy to have the rules on your phone instead of passing around the table. Some things you need to know can ruin your plans in the game were the other players will figure out what you gonna do. IF of course the person explained all rules forgott to tell something or you forgott etc. But anyway very nice content. Thank you =)
You just convinced me to get in on the next kick starter. I am a huge HOMM pc game fan and was worried about getting the first KS for this. You convinced me to jump in
I felt this board game came out well. They did keep in mind it was a board game which has to work differently. But it still feels like the video game to me enough to be happy with the Nostalgia I feel.
Interesting review. While I see some of the points you made regarding gameplay and the hardships caused by translating a video game to the tabletop, I feel other criticism or discomfort to be almost non-existent. Especially in the rulebook department. If something happens during the game which the rulebook doesn't speak about specifically, you and your playing partner(s) have the freedom to decide on what you think is the most logical step going forward. It's that simple. I personally would never demand from such a complex game to be able to give answers to every single one of my questions. I can easily accept that there might be scenarios where the rulebook can only give me guidelines, and I am the one who decides on what to do. Another seemingly problematic bit was about forgetting all the tiny things you have to do manually. Yeah, for a game as extensive as this, that doesn't strike me as a surprise. But the more you play, the more chances you will have to remind yourself on what things you should be doing. Sooner or later you will remember them. But if you forgot to retalite for instance and the next unit has already taken its turn, too bad. Next time, you will pay more attention, but there's no going back to previous steps. And for my last thought, if the game is too hard to comprehend for some players, it's a clear indicator, that Heroes is not the right boardgame for them. Overall, I don't think there are many changes that are truly necessary.
so i might just be spoiled from age of sigmar but those minis look at best average to me like 5/10 still gona buy and paint them for the nostalgia tho lol
They are different games for different occasions, both interesting. Mage Knight more complicated, HoMM more straightforward, especially when you look up community made rulebook.
So far we only tried the game in four people and every time someone was learning the game.... we went for like 7 hours straight and haven't finished a single one, but the game kicks ass. Regarding the rule book, they are updating it for a while now. It's on version 12 since March 22. It's over on boardgamegeek if you head over to the game and look into files there is "Rewritten rule book v.1.2". But gotta admit I struggled with the same issues in my games. Hopefully I will get to play again soon.
The rules are abhorrently poorly written even in Polish. The order in which the rules are put in the rulebook is also very confusing. If that's not the worst rulebook I've seen it has to be a close second.
16:26 It sounds a bit weird to call a game fiddly for forgetting the core mechanics (most of which clearly visible on the table/cards). We had no issue as first time players, although first few turns we might have missed some rules. Could take some games to get this into blood maybe? I enjoyed the video, good review.
While plenty of what you said is true (for exampe instructions here are horrible) I couldn't agree with some of the points. For example gaps in miniatures are very minimalistic. They won't be seen once you put any coat of paint on it, expecially since they are so small.
This could be the moment I break. I do not have any sentiment for the warhammer, but HOMM3? Most certainly. Having said that I hope the models will be great and the quality on par with gw. And yeah, my ideal system would be sort of Old World 6th edition complexity. Fingers crossed.
I know there are many attempts to transform video games into board games, but the general experience is: sounds good in theory, does not work in practice. I think in case of HoMaM 3 they wanted too much and a too complex system to be faithful to the PC counterpart, but apparently the general result is not good as it sounded. However, what I really like is the *Northgard: Uncharted Lands* board game. If you don't know, the original is a survival-RTS game, available on steam. But I like even more the board game version, which is still complex, still a bit difficult to learn every rule, but not that the gameplay is still not that slow or complicated that you lose interest in the game, because the developers simplified the original just enough to make it suitable for a board game. Also the good balance between personal decision making and tactics and the unpredictability of RNG makes the game enjoyable on long term because it doesn't become repetitive. Search for info, or even give it a try if you are interested. Also feel free to ask me for more information.
- Minis gaps are toraly normal in such big complexity and are no problem for a experences painter. - I have to sand down the towns buildings tiles a bit and now they fit perfect. - I cuted the cardboard with shard knife. - Organizations is not that great then you use Card Sleeves, and you have to mix some cards from expansions life artifakts, spell etc. - Rulebook is terrible! - i got really mixed fealing about the gameplay, in all games it loked like this: build army atack enemy, winner wins the game do the louser dont have a change to rebuld army and come back that. All this take hours of game play.... witch could to decides by one battle.
