What's up RU-vid? Yes, this is Art Bell's old call sign; RIP. I was a huge Art Bell fan. He's one of the main reasons I got into Amateur Radio. I try and keep his call sign on the Air and as active as possible. The videos here may be Amateur radio, electronic or video gaming related. I'm not investing a lot of time in this page at this time, but might start doing more Amateur Radio post. I have a lot more content on my TiKTok. Check it out and subscribe. Thanks for stopping by. ~mike de W6OBB 73 *wanna take a ride?
@@W6OBB Yep. Hey were you on South Bay Boulevard this morning at the little parking area for the trails? I saw a guy with a squid pole and a wire going to his car thought it might be you.
I was at US-3407 Benicia State Recreation Area. I had my Chameleon TDL up on a 25’ mast. People would hike through the parking lot area I was at, I was setup on a picnic table in the shade about 20’ from the antenna and the truck. Some of the people were really nice would say hello. One lady was sneaking around and photographed me. Shortly after that a Benica Police officer showed up ask what I was doing asked for my ID, the second Officer showed up as he rounded the corner he saw my antenna and said he’s doing Ham Radio. Both are nice guys and all went well!!! People are crazy!!!
Thanks friend very much appreciated I have spent days asking for this on loads of sites and forums My responses where very concerning they think i am trying to make space ship Not control my mill table Thank you for your video.
Great when people show an interest in what Amateurs are doing on the radio. Who knows they might be the next generation of radio operators so it's what the hobby needs. Good job, 73 de 2E0LVG
Same setup here: FT-891 and MFJ-939Y for when I go portable (some day). At home the FT710. I also have a manual tuner FC-700 which is very good. The MFJ939 can tune a pool noodle! Great little automatic tuner. I will subscribe to your channel. 73 kind Sir.
Congrats. I worked the Japanese expedition to Antarctica a couple years ago. Worked many countries All of it on a 100 watts with a dipole 20 ft off the ground, surrounded by two-story houses. You never know what's going to happen!
Do you mean the feed point was 6 feet off the ground on a vertical antenna? Was it a sloping antenna? Was all of the antenna 6 feet off the ground? Tell all of the story to provide the viewer knowledge. When I saw the title, I assumed I would learn a little about EFHW antennas. Nice that you were able to reach to Japan.
Sorry, I have another video that goes into detail about my EFHW. The entire thing is 6 feet off the ground. From the feed point to the end of the wire. It wraps around my fence in the shape of a square due to my yard being only about 25 feet by 20 feet.
It is an Amateur Radio activity called, "Parks on the Air", or POTA. There are parks all over the world that are designated parks to setup your radio gear in and talk to other Amateur Radio operators. Most of the people we talk to are at home, but sometimes, you also talk to other people in other parks. You need to make contact with 10 people for the event to be considered a successful activation. There are awards for different tasks within this activity. Google Parks on the Air if you'd like to learn more or Google, getting you Amateur Radio License, to see if you may be interested. Thanks for watching and the comment.
LOL! I did for most of my HAM radio time. Only thing that got me out was I have a very high noise level at my home now and antenna restrictions so that got me into POTA and SOTA and I love it now. Nothing like a RF quite zone with S0 noise. Thanks for watching! 73
Good idea. Mine didn't come with pipe clamps. I've used about 50 times and this is only the 2nd time it's happened. Luckily, it has come down fairly slow both times, so nothing broke....... I probably just jinxed myself. LOL! I carry electrical tape so going to try that. Thanks for the tip. Thanks for watching. 73!
Aw man that is the most annoying thing ever... I'm always worried that some of my coax's aren't going to make a solid connection and cause an arc or something while transmitting. How have you been by the way? Been awhile since I've been on the ol' swan. W7NJG, 73's :)
Thanks for watching. I'm posting another soon of today's activation. Hopefully the audio is better. I used a mic I used when I did motorcycle vlogs. It was good at cutting the wind noise. Thanks again. 73 de W6OBB
Thanks! Yes, I'm going to try using my mic I used when I did Motorcycle VLogs. It cuts down on the wind pretty well. Trying it today. Just dug it out of the garage last night after listening to the terrible audio from this one. It's a Purple Panda. Hopefully, it helps. Thanks for watching and 73!
I've tuned mine to that with an external, MFJ-939. Very inefficient, but it worked. The internal tuner on the 710 won't tune to that, however. I think in this video, I had my 7000 hooked up to it but using a Yaesu FT-710 now.
Thanks for the info, because I'm leaning heavily towards buying one of these -- unless there's a newer hotness shown off at Dayton this week! So buy week after next. Also, congrats on gettin Art's old call sign. Really miss the guy.
I mainly use it for portable, SOTA/POTA now with my 891. The thing has been bullet proof. I through it in my back pack and it's all scratched and dinged up and still tuning for me. Thanks for watching! 73 😁
The internal tuner tunes an antenna up to 3:1. If the SWR is higher, you need an external tuner. This MFJ tuner does Matches 6-1600 Ohms (SWR up to 32:1). However, I'd recommend getting an antenna that is a close to resonance as possible. I actually have needed the external tuner with my EFHW antenna. I use this tuner when portable now for POTA or SOTA with my FT-891 as it doesn't have an internal tuner. It works great for my 891 when I want to use my 40-10 EFHW on 17 meters. What's your call sign, BTW. 73 de W6OBB
Has this been fixed yet? also what setting should it work with in the FT-710? I'm trying to interface an MFJ-993b via the MFJ-5124Y to FT-710. No luck so far.
I actually ended up not using with my 710. I played with it a bit, but I have turned it into my Tuner for doing SOTA and POTA with my 891 and it works great. I'm not sure about the setting.
Hello Im trying to put my ic7000 with digirig to work, im not so much computer radio savy, Can you let me know the configuration for the ic7000 to ft8. or let me know where to find it. Many thanks. Blessings fro P Lugo NP3QT JAX Florida. PS. A good video for the 7000 setting it up for ft8 and digirig will get many views, there are none for that radio.
When I set mine up, it was a lot of trial and error. There was not a lot of help on the internet. I've given the 7000 to my son, but I'll see if maybe we can make a 'How To Video". Thanks for watching! 73 de W6OBB
I have had all kinds of reactions with SOTA and POTA. I have even had someone think I was some kind of t*rrorist. So annoying. Did not have that issue in Portugal -- people just ignored me there or wondered if I was fishing.
Yes, be nice and respectful to others. I've had a lot of people over the years stop and ask what I'm doing. I always take time to explain. I even had another HAM a while back that had never heard of POTA sit with me. He said he loved the idea because he was from the Bay Area and lived in a multi story apartment building with limited capability to put up an antenna. He said he was going to start trying POTA so he could play radio again. Thanks for watching! 73
Thanks for this. I have the subject radio and tuner. My biggest complaint with the 710 is the tuner doesn't work a very wide range and requires constant retuning. The MFJ is very fast, if you don' t consider switching the radio to AM. however a much wider range and good memory retention. Also, it tunes my end fed 40 meter antenna on 80 meters, and WARC bands. Yeah maybe not all that efficient, but i also have antenna restrictions.
Yes, it works great on WARC bands w/ an EFHW. I bring this with me now on SOTA and POTA with my FT-891 and an EFHW and it's worked great on 17 meters. I've also made a few contacts on 80 with it. Thanks for watching! 73
@@W6OBB it’s lovely. It fit inside the lid of my go box. I’m not a fan of digital modes, but I would like to use n1mm with cat control and this would do it =)
I'm a ham and a bicyclist. I got the cops called on me for riding my bicycle through the parking of the hospital where I work. It was a sunny day and I was wearing a bright green safety vest at the time. The responding officer insisted that my behavior was indeed suspicious. Thank God I didn't have my HT on my belt too! 😕
Crazy sometimes. Luckily, these 2 were okay with what I was doing. I watched them watch me for probably a half hour as the were hiking along the bluff to get to me. They stopped about every 5 minutes to take another look through their binoculars. LOL! Stay safe! 73 de W6OBB
Thanks! I'm going out again today. Not sure if I'll do the FT8 setup. If I have problems making voice contacts, I may. I wont have internet where I'm going so I wont be able to spot myself. 73 de W6OBB
