Amazing analysis. When I was a young lad in NZ I idolised Bruce McLaren - I read From the Cockpit - his autobiography- and was very sad when I discovered he’d passed. All I heard was my Dad say ‘he was a perfectionist, he asked too much of the car’ and this analysis is perfect to demonstrate this.

It's quite amazing that there is no footage of this crash. It's also amazing that there is no footage of Keke Rosberg's Silverstone 1985 qualifying lap which was the F1 world record of average speed (over 160 mph) for over 2 decades.

I was at that meeting - the whole place just fell absolutely silent - we left in utter shock. Louis Stanley was a disgrace stating it was driver error. Rob Walker, years later, managed to find the truth from an ex-BRM mechanic that it was a rose joint that pulled out of the monococque on the rear suspension. Apparently Walker had to use a fair bit of his family's produce to loosen the guy's tongue.

So watching a car burn requires a warning? A set of burning racing tires is disturbing? Okay.

Paradossalmente è forse meglio se ne sia andato. Infatti l'urto gli aveva distrutto le vertebre cervicali, e i fumi soffocato definitivamente. Avrebbe avuto una vita in sedia a rotelle qualora ne fosse uscito vivo....

Both the Villeneuve crash & the Pironi crash were similar, in that both cars hit the back of slower cars & got launched. The difference was that Villeneuve got thrown out of his car & into fencing, minus a helmet, & died overnight. In Pironi's case he was still attached to his car which probably helped him survive. His injuries though not life-threatening were most definitely life-changing as his legs were so badly shattered he didn't race again. It would be four or five years before he could walk normally again & even considered an F1 comeback for 1988. However that was not to be as he was killed in a powerboat racing accident in 1987.

for the love of god…ive never seen this view before. im questioning whether the men in the fire suits should have removed Mr. Savage first, then put out the fire. i had no idea he was conscious and moving. still rips my soul to shreds, this just made it even worse

At the speed Bruce was travelling everything on the car is under immense strain. Any weak point will be found out by the stresses that the car has to endure. I have used these dzus fasteners at times in my working life and I would hate to think that my life depended on them. I would have thought that the engineers at the time would have realised that something much more robust was needed to secure the part that failed. Other comments here suggest that only TWO of these fasteners were used. I am no mechanical engineer. Would more fasteners have been better - I would have thought so. 155 mph to 0 mph in metre or so - you have no chance - no one can survive that stress on the body.

That thumbnail alone is insane. It’s just a dude burning amongst a few car parts. Crazy to think he probably had no clue his legs were broke because of the whole being on fire thing. 😢

Why the firemen do not use water to disperse, the methanol, alcohol based fuel, is vital as AII the cars were running on this fuel. The co2 powder is NOT the proper way to extinguish Swede and the fuel this he is engulfed in. This was a known fact at the time. Simply dowsing a bucket of water would have done more to put out or dilute the methanol than what these firemen are spraying on Swede. It is a sad and horrific mistake this. Who was in charge of Fire Safety at the 500 in 1973,,,,,,, Why has this never been properly talked about or even investigated,,,,,,,My Dad was a chemist, even he knew what was happening was NOT correct procedure to put out or disperse a methanol fire. I loved how fast old Tamburello was, but with this & Berger's crash in 1989, I always thought it was insane that even after these crashes. They never put gravel, tyre barriers or anything other than a concrete wall. If they had actually reacted to these crashes by improving safety, Senna might still be around

It is criminal how underknown and underappreciated Siffert was. Few know, but he was leading the 1970 Le Mans by an extraordinary margin before missing a downshift, ending his run. Siffert was always fast, but extraordinarily unlucky
