What is this lady talking about? Many of my Turkish friends are the most nationalistic people I know, lol. Their flag is basically sacred for them, and Turkish nationalism is absolutely different from the "dangerous" nationalism, which led to WW2 in Europe (which wasn't even nationalism, but chauvinism). Gathering around the flag in Turkey means to keep the multi-ethnic remnants of the once huge Ottoman Empire together, and it also helped to turn Turkey into a quite secular country. The same goes for many Arab countries, where nationalism led to modernization in many aspects. This evolution in the Middle East was later boycotted by western-imperialism, and led to the rise of many religious fundamentalist groups and failed states. Also, what is so problematic about populism? It literally just means to attract voters by addressing their desires and demands. Only unpopular people complain about populism. I disagree with Douglas as well though. Islamic fundamentalism is definitely not just an imported problem, since many of the radicalized people are 2nd and 3rd gen. immigrants, so they radicalized themselves here. Just look at the number of European citizens joining ISIS.
