I'm glad I'm not the only one that loves Classic Chrome for video. Just love the color tones in the skin and sky with Classic Chrome. F-Log gives me some funky color noise in the skin and dark shadows. So I pretty much stick with Classic Chrome or Eterna (f-log replacement).
Thanks for the info. I would guess like any tool it's up to the user to learn where they work best to prevent that light wash that goes on occasionally. I understand that, not so much with straight on headlights, that using a matte box will help out on some situations where the sun is causing the effect. I'll find out. I ordered a set two days ago. I went ahead and ordered diopters. Of course it turns out that the 35mm is a 58 filter and the other 2 are 62 filter. Figured it out before delivery by accident looking at website.
Thank you! I really like this real life review. I'm looking for an update for my x-t200 and I wasn't sure if xh2s is better for youtube than x-s20. No I think that I would not need prores for most of the time and just can go with 10 bit 200mb long Gop. Thanks again!
Hey John this looks great im shooting on an XH2-s would you recommend shooting open gate ? or 1080p 24fps ? I guess also it would be better to turn off any ibis and lens ois ?
@@adammarcholland3201 hey Adam! Thanks man. You’re on the right track with those things. I actually have a guide for all that detailed stuff. On the product page publicly and inside the product package you can find all 3 instructional videos with chapters! You’ll find lots of good info in there!
question: is there a way to toggle focus peaking on and off by pushing a button? i can't assign it to a button, and also struggle with it in general when manual focusing, it also sharpens the image in a ugly unusable way… thanks!
I played with F-log and IT8 chart both reflective and transparency using 3DLUT creator. It didn't work. Best was negative std. - very little difference after correction. Haven't tried classic chrome. I'd like simulate film scans but 3DLUT Creator cannot deliver good result using match function.
Interesting, I really didn’t expect you to review the 18-120 and more so like it 😂 I have both it and the 16-80. The 16-80 is optically better in the corners with no surprises there but the lens OIS in my experience isn’t great with video with even stable pans regardless of settings. It’s best for a tripod style shot. The 18-120 is great focus wise, agree it is responsive to the autofocus adjustment and the exposure stepping has been fixed (though in reality even before it was only apparent at two specific points in the zoom range and any videos that zoomed out he whole zoom range just looked cheap anyway rather than selective with purpose). Only small gripe I wish the sensitivity in zooming or focus with the ring or rocker was a little less sensitive if trying to do a subtle capture. Otherwise, I am interested however in the new Sirui anamorphic you just reviewed tho. Anyway good review John always great thought out content
Thanks Im thinking to buy a X-H2 or Lumix S5 to shot anamorphic, but no see menu of capture anamorphic videos on the X-H2 can you tell me about, I really need a external monitor to deezquese the video I know that but can you choise the x display 1.33x or 2.0x or 1.5x ? thanks
hey! i'm following the tutorial, everything goes smoothly until the powergrade import step.. for some reason Davinci is not able to "import stills" any idea why?
can u pls help me i followed altrough and i get the black screen when i apply it is this happening cause i didnt select the 18 frames cause u really want my footage to keep 29 fps
Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro is the better lens; way sharper, built like a tank, gives more reach on the wide end and on the tele end, better closest focus, clutch manual focus switch and sync-IS making it WAY better for video without a gimble, which with lens, you basically don't need it.
@@johnstamw The comparison stands because they have a similar focal range and the same constant f/4 aperture. This is an apples to apples comparison, easily.
When I shot Fujifilm, I owned this lens and it's a FANTASTIC lens. I didn't use it for video at all. It was used for travel and street photography. Most people don't know that the X-Trans processor is a 1.53 crop, not 1.5 like Sony and Nikon. Whereas Canon is 1.6. That said, you get 28mm-184mm, rounded up, at f5.6 in full-frame terms. That's a LOT of reach with a lens that's light weight and sharp enough for photography. But here's the thing about the Innanets and Social Media, EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE complains about everything. There is no perfect camera, there is no perfect lens and last but not least, THERE IS NO PERFECT PHOTOGRAPHY OR VIDEOGRAPHER. There doesn't need to be. As a photographer, who does various forms of photography, it's about the Art of Photographer which doesn't require the sharpest image corner to corner. RU-vid especially will have people thinking that they have to have the latest and greatest everything to make good photos. So not true.
I use this lens for hiking and low stakes video projects. Even when I can upgrade to a MKX 18-55mm T2.9 lens I will likely keep this little power zoom for the previously mentioned purposes.
He has since moved on to panasonic if I’m not mistaken, his views quickly changed right after the newer firmware updates which made autofocus mostly unusable.
Firmware for this lens specifically?? If you’re referring to the body I just never updated my firmware:) I found it always worked for me on 1.03 and I kept it.
I love my 16-55. The 16-80 OIS is no slouch and has optical stabilization, which in my view acts better than fuji's ibis on many occasions. The 18-120 after some firmware updates, is no slouch either.
Hi John, considering Sirui is full frame, we are not getting a full potential of this lens (field of view is cropped, part of the image is not captured). T2.9 becomes like F4.35 in DOF terms... Wouldn't it be better to use Laowa 50mm (designed for super35/APSC, with x1.5 anamorphic factor) T2.5. What was your main consideration? Focal lenght, field of view/ angle of view? DOF and how bright the lens is?
Still recommend this today? I just picked up an xs20 and started playing with film sims for photos. Look to avoid editing footage since I’ll be using it for family stuff and fun. Thanks!!
@@johnstamw thanks man! Dialed it in! Side note, is there a time when you notice that AF is snappy when not recording but then goes so slow when recording? Wondering if thats a setting I missed. Thanks!
@ChrisFlores22 that’s your AF speed settings. They do not apply when not recording. It’s a weird quirk but it makes the AF behave differently like that
@@ChrisFlores22 it works fine both times! When you’re not recording it just ignores your custom settings. You’ll have to adjust your AF settings to your preference.
