@2:37 hypnotic tree 😵💫😅 Edit : to be completely honest, I’ll miss the window and natural light from your old studio. But hey, that’s a new exciting trip for you, I wish you the best 🙂🙃
I know what you mean, there was some beauty with having the big window, but it also creates lots of issues with lighting 😂 so hopefully things will be a lot more consistent in the look of the videos! Thanks for the support though 😄
Hey Chris and Max, wishing you all the best in your new space. Nothing is as liberating as to having the ability to 'rock out' 24/7 with no outside complainants. Looking forward to the bangers you will drop from your new creative zone. bless up
Hi :) Thanks for the video and sorry if my question is naïve! What if you don't want to layer sounds (because, say, you use a boss looper), but you want to easily access a couple of synths, a bass, and drums sounds. One after the other, but without having to search for them forever. Is that possible without the MPC crushing?
Not naive at all! So you can actually save favourites to the MPC, so you can have a bank of all your favourite sounds in one place, this will make it a lot easier to find everything you're looking for. The only downside is you cant do this for the drum kits. But I would suggest you make a template to include all of this so you can open a fresh project loaded with all the sounds you'd use. Hope this helps!
Always enjoy your vids Chris, your enthusiasm is contagious, I use the full spitfire platform at work, this cut down version whilst sounding a little thin , a little light, will none the less get a lot of ppl started exploring the wonders of having an orchestra at your finger tips, so thanks for putting this info out there.
Thanks so much for the support, really appreciate it! What libraries do you find yourself using from Spitfire? And agreed, having a whole orchestra at your fingertips can be so powerful. Even just to get the hang of composing for numerous instruments!
Hello! Can this synthesizer be used as a full-fledged instrument at a concert with a band? In particular, I am wondering if it is possible to launch playback from it and separately display a click for the drummer?
You can launch playback from it but the synth only has 2 outputs so you might be a bit limited on separating the audio and the click. You could always have the playback be in mono but then you wouldn't be able to use the synth at the same time as it would take up the output channels too.
Nice tutorial! THX If U find time, please help me with ableton + microkorg: I don't know why but my synt can't make accent when I change velocity in DAW to 127 of one or more notes in ableton :/ Do I have to change smthing in my microKORG? My other synth: MAM MB33 has this accent from the box. Strange. THX! PS. SUB+!
Thanks for subbing, I don't believe the microkorg has velocity per se. You mainly control the volume through the amp or filter envelope but even that doesn't have control over individual notes. I think it's something I've just naturally put up with. But if you used it as a MIDI controller it will probably spit out velocity, but the synth patches that come out of it won't react to the velocity itself.
I have a really big problem with the dynamics of Electra 88. You can change them a little bit, but I have to do this everytime because it doesn't save the settings
Hi Chris, I understand why Vocal Tune, Vocal Chain Tuned Reverb doesn't fit the Safari Pedals Universe. I must admit I felt a bit 'meh' when I received the email, as per 'generic' vibe i'm getting from this suite. I personally don't need these as Cubase Pro 13 does a great job with the stock Vari-Audio, REVerence and the frickin' awesome VocalChain vocal processor [check THAT out...really Chris...check that out] plugin included as standard. I never thought I'd give these a pass but if I had $99 as their intro price I'd save up another $31 and invest in Safari Pedals 'Everything Bundle' [more bang for your buck] as opposed to these, in the truly saturated market of vocal suite plugins on the market. More Safari Pedals please Noam ; ) Great presentation as always Chris👍🏿
Ive seen all the 37 video from you, i got interested in the 37 because i do want a modern MPC in my set up, but the One and the One + might not do it...but with the 37 and its presets..i think you convinced me even more to get one 😭😭 i dont even play keyboard either, but its like why not learn right? Lol
Oooh Boy! I do really get a lot out of it, especially if you're coming from the guitar background you can always use the scale modes built in to help stick all the notes to a key. Personally I really enjoy all the different sounds available and am really utilising it in my workflow. And facts it's worth learning keys over for sure!!
@TheChrisVella I'm coming from the SP background, I just recently got it during the summer time and I've been enjoying it so far, I just wished it had keys to go with it, I use it with Koala Sampler from time to time as well, so I feel like the Key 37 can do it some more justice being best of both worlds. I also wanna try out the chocolate synth from fabric xl because it's soo good ugh 😩
Thanks, this is in fact the only serious walktrough how it works. I bought it a few weeks ago and discovered it lacked a manual or good comprehensive video by the creator. This helped me out a lot!
Cheers! I'm glad you enjoyed it, I really got along with the plugin and felt it made sense to show people the power of it. Glad you enjoyed it and learned a thing or two!
Thanks man, this is all I was asking for! 👍🏽 Is there any way to save the presets like performances? Like going to one song to another and having it already there? Thanks
Yeah you can definitely save patches! Just pick a sound, save the preset if you make any changes to it. Then theres a preset slot you can save it to in the sounds menu.
I absolutely love the process of songwriting, composing, arrangement and production. From making a good song into a great song. Song breakdowns are so inspiring to watch and learn from. Admittedly I don't use synths [of which I have a ton] as much as I should in my songs and like seeing how they are used to great effect. Big up Jordan on the mix/master and of course your good self Chris for sharing. Getting a Mike and the Mechanics [a la Paul Carrack] vibe from the overall production. Keep em' coming dude!👍🏿
Cheers Lloyd! Glad you enjoyed it! I love doing the production breakdowns as personally it’s something I really enjoy watching too. And agreed, I find adding synths to songs can really add an interesting atmosphere to the music, I love discovering which direction to take it using them. Also big love to Jordan he really did smash it! Thanks for the support man 😄
Good stuff! Would you base the whole project with a drum tracks like this? I imagine it could become a mess of tracks. Or Would you export your drum track as a wave file?
Thank you! Sometimes, it really depends on the project. I find myself now either using superior drummer with a similar workflow or I’ll just use individual samples and program everything but either way I usually keep all the layers whether I’m working in this method or end up exporting them as stems!
What's up man, love your work with Andertons! I've been using my Key 61 as my main live board pretty much since launch, so I have spent a lot of time thinking about this exact problem. I actually created a bunch of keygroup synths based on single cycle waveforms, which take up basically zero RAM, so I can fit all my sounds (30+ with room to spare) in a single project for a gig. Each synth takes less than 2MB RAM so there is essentially no limit to how many you can have. Same principle would apply to the 37 I imagine. I actually recently released an expansion of them. If you go to my channel, the main link will take you there (apparently YT doesn't like links in comments). Hope it proves useful for people and would love to know what you think! For me personally it's made it viable for me to use it as my everything board. In fact, for live shows I use it with a second MIDI keyboard on another channel, with all sounds coming from the Key 61. One commenter did point out that the CPU/dropout problem you're experiencing could be due to the lack of MIDI muting on the current version of 3.0 Track Mutes. In which case, it is what it is, and that seems to be one thing a lot of people hope AKAI changes with the public beta/release. But my sounds run smooth as butter on 2.0, both on my Key 61 and my One.
Awesome demo man, thanks alot! And lovely playing. One request though: could you please add to the description and to the time stamps that which plug-ins are included in the device and which ones must me purchased separately. I know you’ve mentioned it somewhere in the comment field, but having those in the description would seriously help newcomers. Thanks!
One word Chris...BANGIN'..........Vibes for days mate. Feelin' ya on the dance tip,. As you alluded there's a massive vocal chops 'rabbit hole' to explore. I'm not au fait with Ableton but on my 'go to' DAW Cubase, there's a neat option to chop the vocal loop on the channel and slide in each section, I had a lot of happy accidents doing that. [check Cubase's YT vid featuring Ian Kirkpatrick on producing with the slide function] Your tip of pitching up/down on each slice in the timeline is smart also and non dependent of the sampler entirely which gives optimum control. Keep 'em comin mate
Thanks as always Lloyd, appreciate you man! That sounds awesome, I really dig the Kirkpatrick stuff I'll defo have to check that out! Thanks for the heads up 😄
You have to use the keygroup sampled instruments. It's one of the track type options where you'd pick either drums, a plugin instrument, midi, etc. This will allow you to use a single wav across the whole keyboard.
I use my Key 61 at church each week. Works great. I am still on MPC2, have not upgraded to the beta MPC 3 yet. I think if you could disable the unused plugins while not in use, that would help save some CPU as well. Just Muting the audio keeps the plugin active. Maybe they will give us the option to stop sending midi to the plugin if it is muted.
Thats a good point, I'm hoping over time with a few updates the software will become a bit more efficient so the plugins can run smoother. But the 61 key defo triumphs the live performance side.
EXCELLENT tutorial on different ways of adding width and interest to recordings. Something that thrills every time I hear it: dynamic "stereo" processing according to volume and/or frequency; meaning, the stereo perception of the source widens and narrows according to its dynamics. Frequency can be achieved pretty easily with an appropriate EQ curve in the chain prior to the effect used for the contrasting channel. There are many plugins for achieving both, but two that come to mind, which are explicitly named for the purpose, are Sound Particles' Energy Panner and Brightness Panner. I'm sure both effects can be found in the one plugin from other plugin makers. Of course, modulating the effect channel with a tempo-synced LFO is also interesting; however, the most thrill for me has been when the source material, not necessarily tempo, drives the effect - it accentuates the source's character and emotion perhaps.
Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I have actually never heard of this but I'll take a look into it, sounds super fascinating that you can change the stereo perception through dynamics! Cheers for mentioning it :D
Terrific video and great tips for live performance. I'd get one of these in a heart beat if it came with 4gb of RAM. Be nice to have a SATA drive bay as well. But still, a great value as is.
Yeah I agree, I think you could use a small drive or even a pen drive for some samples but it would be a little fiddly to have to hanging off it. But I can't complain, the storage has been pretty reliable so far!
THX for this vid! I would never use this underpowered "PC in a box" for live use, which begin to fart when you push it to the limit - horrible! If you play ambient pads with long sustain/release time or fast piano notes/chords with the hold pedal, the processor will probably go to its knees much faster. That's why we have hardware synths/workstations, even with limitations but so much more solid. Overall it is a nice compact dawless solution, but this weakness puts me off.
I feel you, I think you could get a good workflow with a smaller/ more basic project file but overall I really enjoy the quality of the sounds and the size factor is a plus! But partnering it with a bigger keyboard does help which counters what I said about the size 🫢
