Oddly Nero HATED his mother and when an elaborate attempt to kill her which involved a booby trapped barge failed he had soldiers stab her to death. Allegedly she told them to stab her womb since it had borne Nero.
I'm so old I won't even give this guy a chance at portraying Caligula. John Hurt is and was Caligula!!!!!!!!!!!! His performance is seared into my brain. Hurt is the son of Germanicus; that's it!
Caligula like Epstein and Trump, loved them young, and usually on the male side. Nero was in fact a childhood lover to Caligula. Caligula, was incestuous as well. Remember when Trump said hed date(have sex) with his own daughter? I wonder just what he was hiding with that statement.
Caligula, Saxon and then Arthur Fried in Cold Courage. Simm has been ringing changes on this particular character for the whole of his career. Thanks so much for sharing this!
Caligula will always be remembered as one of the most evil men who ever lived. But ask yourself; was he made evil by corruption and indulgences or did he go mad after his illness and the death of his sister? This is one of the many questions we'll never have answered.
Caligula was completely the product of grandmother Livia's upbringing. Caligula's parents were respected Roman citizens, his father was a famous military leader who already received the respectful nickname Germanicus during his lifetime. because father and his wife were often on campaigns. Caligula was raised by his grandmother Livia, who was also the wife of Emperor Augustus. Livia quickly discovered that the boy is stubborn, arrogant, jealous and greedy for power, generally suitable material from which to mold a future emperor. And Livia started to shape
There are so many historical innacuracies here and definitely biased toward making Caligula worse than he was. He wasn't great, but I think he was a product of severe PTSD due to practically his whole family being assassinated and then having to live with the killer (Tiberius). On top of it all, he was not trained to be the heir, never held any real position, and when he does ascend to the throne - he is given supreme power. A 24 year-old with no prior experience, not quite mentally alright, and full of rage for a Senate that allowed his family to be killed and are now sucking up to him as a savior of Rome, due to his father's fame. Not a good combo. Keep in mind too, that Claudius (as many Emperors did) threw his name on the dirt after he ascended the throne after Caligula. But Caligula was liked by the people, he chose generals who went on to become Emperors themselves, and he left enough of a surplus that Claudius was able to launch several conquests. I actually think Nero and Elagabalus were far worse.
So basically the Praetorians said to Caligula. "Uhm... we have a suprise for ya. In a brothel..." And he said: "Yeah, nice. I hope it has both male and female genitals." ... They really dumbed it down.
