If I made a railgun with 10 1000uf 450v capacitors (1012.5 Joules) and shot a 5g projectile from 8-10 inches of rail, how fast would my projectile go? My calculations tell me about 632m/s, but I need to be sure. Thanks!
Just wondering what makes the rail corrode so badly after the discharge? I know it's the electricity but could that be avoided by using purer metal components or limiting air to touch the rails?
That is not entirely true, also a big reason why we don’t see wide spread use of the railgun is that the rail of the railgun destroys itself so fast, so it is not very effective to use in real live battle.
1 thing you can do to save your armatures is to give the projectile the fastest speed you can give it before entering the armatures, this way the time that the projectile touches your rail’s is shorter so the damage is less.
