Many Babalawo think that if you have not been out of this country, you haven’t achieved anything. So they all try to have a foreign client who will foot their bills and take them out to a foreign country. They call that achievement, but it is not. Some other Babalawo believe that driving big cars, having long Ifa beads, and holding ceremonial titles define achievement. However, this is not even close to achievement. Before you say that you have achieved something, you must have set a purpose for yourself. When that purpose is met, then you can say to yourself that you have achieved something or your purpose is fulfilled. How many Babalawo have a purpose? Most Babalawo are not given a purpose by any Orisa; they simply find themselves doing this Babalawo work. Because nobody gives them a purpose, they believe that having many wives, a good ceremonial title, or a foreign client is the true definition of achievement. Many Babalawo are shouting Ifa without truly understanding what Ifa looks like or means. They believe the next thing is to ensure that everything and everyone is initiated into Ifa. Is that your purpose? Or is your purpose to solve people’s problems without pushing or making it mandatory for them to undergo Ifa initiation at all costs for your own benefit? What you don’t know is that if you go ahead and initiate someone into Ifa when they were meant to undergo Sango initiation, that person will not find peace until they complete Sango initiation.
