I had a friend years ago, who would try to get into it when people were tripping on him and I had to tell him "Look, how do you know that none of these guys have a gun? Let it go, it's not worth dying because someone's looking for a fight." If someone shoulder bumps you in the street, all you gotta do is make sure they're not trying to do more than that and keep it moving. I really appreciate that you're highlighting the logical reason you don't want to get into fights; you don't know what the escalation or consequences are at risk.

Excellent point about not hanging around to block multiple attacks. Just one and get out. Very well done.

@wmpyr
@wmpyr 9 часов назад
Thank you, that is because most attacks we learn teach you to either hold your ground or step in, and both of those are not good because you are gonna lose distance if they are aggressive. If you want distance to help you we need to constantly maintain or create distance.

Your teachings in this part really drive home the importance of avoiding that dangerous middle ground where both people can get cut. I appreciate the focus on staying either in long-range or close-range, and how you break down the defensive mindset for close-range combat. The force-to-force block and active shielding with forearms make a lot of sense, especially when you emphasize not getting stuck in a prolonged exchange but aiming to block just one strike and then jamming the attack. It’s all about survival and controlling the situation, and your approach to minimizing exposure is incredibly practical.
@wmpyr
@wmpyr 9 часов назад
Thanks again!! Close Range is actually heaven or hell. You can get finished there, but that's if they control you, but if you go in on your terms then you can be very successful defensively. Compare that to Medium Range where even if you are dominating, all it takes is a lucky hit and you can be KOed. Medium Range is much more chaotic in that sense so we want to avoid that.
@SFzip
@SFzip 3 часа назад
@@wmpyr Thanks for the insight! I totally get what you mean about close range being heaven or hell depending on who has control. It makes a lot of sense to want to engage on your own terms to avoid getting overwhelmed. The idea of medium-range being chaotic is really helpful to visualize why it's so risky. Are there any specific drills or techniques you recommend to practice gaining control in close-range situations? I'd love to sharpen that skill, especially with the force-to-force block in mind!
@SFzip
@SFzip День назад
Your teachings on defensive attacks and maintaining distance are solid, especially when dealing with a reckless attacker. In my mind, as the attacker charges, I could see myself using a front push kick aimed at the crotch, stomach, knee, or shin to throw them off balance and cause discomfort. That brief moment of disruption could give me just enough time to follow up with a knife strike or make a quick escape, while still being ready to defend against any other potential threats.
@wmpyr
@wmpyr 9 часов назад
Thank you, time and time again with my students distance is such an important factor. So for the Front Push Kick most people will either hold their ground to do it, or if they blast it they will move forwards, either way you will lose distance. So in order to keep distance, I recommend pushing yourself off of the opponent rather than trying to push the opponent back. It takes some practice but I used this when fighting bigger people, it helped me out a lot.
@SFzip
@SFzip 3 часа назад
@@wmpyr Thank you for the feedback! I totally see the value in using the front push kick to push myself off the opponent and maintain distance, especially against bigger attackers. In my mind, though, I feel like I'd only be able to pull off one kick, since the first kick has the element of surprise. After that, the attacker will likely be ready for any further attempts to push them away. I feel like I'd need to immediately capitalize on that brief moment by either delivering a knife strike or escaping. Do you think this reasoning makes sense? I'd love to hear your guidance on whether it's better to follow up with an immediate strike or try to reset distance after the first kick.
@SFzip
@SFzip День назад
Really appreciate how realistic you're painting the scenario. Your focus on awareness, mental preparedness, and especially distance control in a hostile situation is spot on. Assuming the attacker is armed and has backup nearby keeps us from being caught off guard, which is so crucial in real life. The emphasis on creating space with the Poison Mist technique gives practical tools for maintaining a defensive position, while staying prepared to defend yourself without unnecessarily escalating the situation. Solid breakdown!
@wmpyr
@wmpyr 9 часов назад
Thank you for your comments!! Surprise is such a powerful weapon that we need to make sure to minimize it when used against us. The Poison Myst tactic can be done with different techniques and combos. It doesn't even have to be Escrima, it can be done with Boxing combos too.

Your K4S system is really interesting! It's a practical, low-profile way to use an inexpensive knife for self-defense. If it gets confiscated at the airport or elsewhere, I can buy another one and even have it sent to a hotel where I'm staying. I really like the Five Points method; it's well thought out for real-world situations. I might stick to the F5 Opening technique, though, because I'm a bit worried about the blade slamming onto my fingers with the Alligator Opening under duress.
@wmpyr
@wmpyr 4 дня назад
Thank you! You bring up a good point about the Alligator Opening, so the training method that I utilized back in the day was to get a tactical folding knife trainer and collide into a telephone pole as I did the Alligator Opening. I started nice and slow without a ton of force but I gradually increased the speed and force until I was confident to do it in real life.

I guess in World War 2 times young lads conscripted en-masse had to be trained 'combat ready' in a very short period of time, so the 'flowery stuff' had to be kicked outa the window in preference for a ttoolkit that would (hopefully) work. From videos I've only occasionally seen, it was used for stealth, with a knife that would easily penetrate through a thick trench coat and uniform. These were terrible times, but guess it was the only place something like this was truly pressure tested- kill or be killed.. :( For me, I like the flow and flowery stuff, but then again I'm guilty of liking the Art, before the Martial, but that's just me, and I'm lucky at 65 years old never to have faced someone who wants to kill me... His training did of course save many lives (and, take in turn). Great analysis, and great to see how the old can sometimes be valued even today.
@wmpyr
@wmpyr 10 дней назад
Thank you for your comment! If I cannot decode the flowery stuff, meaning that I can't find any kind of practical purpose to the flowery stuff then it is removed, but that is not the case, usually there is some sort of practical purpose if you dig deep enough and take the time to modify and evolve it.

When I was a child, I used to laugh at people hitting with the edge of their hand. They seemed insignificant and weak compared to punches. Only now I notice their power and I don't know about you, but it seems to me that they can be even more effective than the fist, and certainly less injury-prone. Can you comment on the comparison between edge of the hand strikes and hammer fists? After all, it's the same striking surface. Regards.
