Naming this iconic institution after a hedge fund billionaire is the dumbest move ever. Sadly I think you will rue the day that you did this.

"Greatly as I appreciate the attitude of the Trustees, for whom I have the profoundest respect and for many of them real affection, I must insist upon the removal of my name. I am sure it is in the best interests of the project. If I were not convinced that it will in the long run be prejudicial, I would have delighted to have my name connected with it, as you can readily imagine. If no name is used, it will belong to the people the same as the Art Institute. The people supply the building and will be taxed to support it and others will be solicited to give exhibits and again others to contribute money for memberships and special purposes. ...Please therefore make it as easy as you can and see that the change is made. The sooner the better." - Julius Rosenwald Have you ensured your legacy or have you forsaken it?

Thus is really stupid. So he made a donation -- it's not 'his' museum! Plus, the guy up and leaves Chicago for Miami, but puts his 'stamp' on an historic piece of Chicago. Typical of somebody with lots of money and ego to boot!

Absolutely not. I will never visit a museum that proudly named itself after a hateful bigot like Griffin. He supports genocide and segregation. And it is absolutely disgusting that you are propping him up on the backs of scientists of color.

If it was a true donation then you wouldn't need to rename anything. Either your the museum staff are totally tone deaf to see how stupid of a move this is or the donator is so egotistic that they need their name printed on everything they touch.

A thing I think is cool and sort of unique about the MSI is that it really does carry its World's Fair heritage through how it presents its exhibits. Like, a World's Fair is a lot of getting regular people interested and excited about stuff they'd probably not find interesting or exciting on their own. It follows from a history of that kind of presentation coming from businesses trying to pitch their wares to the public. But sales motivation aside, being able to tell people a story behind an object or explain how it's going to factor into your life and maybe even make it better is THE strat for getting people to care about things. It creates investment. And I almost wonder if that the MSI does this doesn't also create an expectation elsewhere. A friend and I have been working on this project about the Pioneer Zephyr and the Nebraska Zephyr, and so it necessarily compares the MSI to the Illinois Railway Museum. The main reason why we started it was because the E5 that pulls the Nebraska Zephyr, "Silver Pilot", has an amazing story that the IRM just... doesn't tell. We have our suspicions as to why, but it's also just that the IRM's heritage is being founded by train enthusiasts and those guys tend to care more about stats than stories. Which is not to disparage the IRM; they're a magnificent museum also and it's just that their heritage doesn't include having to sell people on the trains because trainguys are already sold. The other day, though, we found an article written by one of the former presidents of the IRM where he basically says that people come to the museum and want to know the history and human element of the exhibits and not just "railfan details" as he called them. So it wasn't just me and my friend who went there and wanted (expected?) to be made to be more invested. As it was, we'd have never found out about "Silver Pilot"'s story at all if the Pioneer Zephyr exhibit hadn't gotten us intrigued to know where the Nebraska Zephyr fit on the family tree first. I doubt that would have happened if it hadn't been given that World's Fair treatment.
