My name is John. This channel is about my life, and my loves... My music. The Blues. Guitars. Cigar Box Guitars. And so much more! Thanks for stopping by.
Thanks for this history and info on Peetie Wheatstraw. My dad had a compilation album which featured Wheatstraw, Cousin Joe, etc that I really enjoyed when I was in my early teens, circa 1968.
I grow up in Steele Mo my uncle was one of the owners of the Quarters club on Twigg street I grow up on Twigg street all my life I remember so many juke joints down their and people everywhere boy that was along time ago... But I didn't know Robert Johnson came to Steele MO and played in the Quarters juke joint mane wow....
You wouldn't have any pictures that have those old juke joints in them would you? I've been trying hard to find some... If you ever come across any, please let me know. Johnny Shines talked about coming to Steele with Robert Johnson back in the 1930's. They traveled together for while. Johnson came to MO several times during his life, and spent time playing here. I've always been fascinated by that, and am trying to dig up whatever I can about that. Thank you for posting! I appreciate it.
@@StillLivinTheBlues Mane I only got one with me and my mom standing in front of the Quarters juke joint back in 1990 mane everybody has past on in that era mane.
@@Nitty74 You wouldn't know anything about the history of that Juke Joint would you? (Sorry for asking the questions! I'm just trying to learn/document as much history of the area that points back to the older blues legends.)
Incorrect. Look again. You are confusing the guitars in the studio portrait, and the dime store photos. Those are two different guitars. The studio photo is a Gibson, and dime store photos is the Kalamazoo.
@@kenbash2951 I looked it up on wikipedia, which YOU quoted as backing you up, and you obviously do have some comprehension issues. Here's the quote and link from wiki... "The guitar he is holding in the photo where he has a cigarette in his mouth is believed to be a Gibson Kalamazoo model KG-14, and some believe that he used a KG-14 in his legendary recording sessions in 1936 and 1937. Kalamazoo was a budget brand offered by Gibson during the depression era. The KG-14 originally sold for $12.50." link - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Johnson_(guitars) Like I said, every article I've read has that as the Kalamazoo.
You wish. Obviously, you don't understand that Dr. May writes/posts himself on Instagram and his his own page. It's better to just not say anything when you don't understand something, than to comment and make yourself look stupid.
Yup. The Smithsonian Institution had it, and they've it back to Mrs. Annye Anderson... A lot of folks know about it and have seen it. It just hasn't been released to he public...yet.
@@zingpulse4138 Oh yeah! I wish we could. Him, Peetie Wheatstraw, and a lot of others. The ONLY reason we have any pictures of Robert Johnson is because of his half-sister Carrie Thompson. She saved them all of those years after his death. Every photo of Robert comes from her. I have doubts we will find more of Patton and some of these others...but you just never know.
Just on the RU-vids lookin' at this and that. Then, I remembered the devil in Crossroads. After, "10 Things You Didn't Know About Crossroads" video (which was fun as well as educational), the algorithm threw this at me. HOLY SHITE!!! I'm missing out on a big chunk of music. I'm familiar with the blues but, it wasn't my thing. I have a HIGH appreciation for it though. It always seems to be played at the right time though. Anyhoo, I'm writing a movie and I kid you not, the Blues just became a part of the soundtrack! I wish I could use this! LOL Still, this was phenomenal playing. I look forward to learning more!!!
After watching this video, I got out my guitar and wrote and recorded a song about the movie, but I changed the ending. I like my ending best. Wish I could upload my own recording here. I don't see a way. Let me know if anyone want's to see it. It's copyrighted and free to watch.
it is written by Roberts step sister "Annye", in her book...that Roberts brother "Son" pawned his guitar in Memphis.a few years after Roberts death..there are quite a number of prewar Kalamazoo guitars still around...maybe someone still has it, unaware of its "Holy Grail" origins
That was the guitar Robert had at death. We don't know for sure if it was the Kalamazoo he bought in Southeast MO. There is no telling how many he owned during his lifetime. The one in this video is the Kalamazoo Johnny Shines said him and Robert bought down in Southest Missouri. This is how I understand it. Thanks!
I remember hearing another account which said that Muddy heard this guy on a street corner and he was sort of shaken by what he heard that he didn't make contact, he thought it was Johnson..
Yeah. He told that story. Muddy said it was down at Friars Point. It was at the Hirsburg store...which was a popular spot for blues musicians to play. Robert Johnson was known to play there often, and is who most people think about playing there. Muddy stated this long before this was commonly known, so he obviously knew about Johnson playing there. Thanks for posting! :) (Here is my visit to the building where Hirsburg's was.) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-35qFE09J5IE.html
That fake photo, a couple of clicks back, had me gagging 10 seconds after I saw it. The Photoshop stretch on his left hand fingers is painful. At the time it was still under inspection, which I could not believe. I had used Photo Shop since it's beginning. 3- floppies in 1992. There is no question it was a very careless forgery. The masking and fake aging were also amateur city. BTW: I knew Johnny Shines briefly c. 1970. God, damn well near, stamped "Great Man" on his forehead. I grew up playing piano. Didn't switch to guitar until a band forced me...
Which fake photo? The one where he is supposedly with Shines? At this point in time, I'm pretty much convinced that there won't be anymore new photos of Robert with the exception of the one the Smithsonian recently gave back to Mrs. Anderson. All known photos in existence have come from Robert's family. (Carried Thompson, etc...) If anyone else shows up with a photo, claiming it to be Robert, I'll be skeptical because no one outside of his family have ever produced one.
Nice to hear. I really like Quicksilver. Background music is way to much front music, Haha I just figured out the music was from my computer. Okay again. Thanks for the information.
Great video indeed sir and a lot of well versed research and effort gone into thos, too. From my understanding of what I have learned about Robert's life, the guitar that Robert lost in the fire at the hotel, was probably the guitar that he got from Ile Zinneman. Ike was known to be the best guitarist in the deep south and Robert lived with Ike and his family for about 8 months before returning to Robinsonville, but I have read from a few articles that Ike had given Robert his guitar to take and play with. I have heard a clip of Son House claiming that when Robert returned to Robinsonville after living and learning from Ike, the guitar had 7 strings on it instead of the traditional 6 strings. How much of Son House's claims to be true or not is a shot in the dark given that Son House also claimed that Robert wasn't any good on the guitar before meeting Ike and yet, it is known that Robert was already an average guitarist and was already playing some jook joints and hiuse parties for about 2 years before Son House moved to Robinsonville. It would be nice if it was possible to have a time machine and be able to go back and just observe what happened and have some way to record it on video so that it would help at least answer so many of the questions and mysteries about Robert's life. I do wonder if Robert may have been on the autism spectrum although being what's known as 'High Functioning' because there is clear evidence from Johnny Shines and others that account for Robert's Savant level ability to hear any piece of music just once and be able to play it on his guitar, while playing the guitar in a way that is more like a piano and not as a guitar would usually be played, plus Robert although was capable of having a regular conversation, but if he didn't like someone or didn't feel comfortable with them, he would tend to be quiet and just keep to himself. I can't help wonder that given that mental health in those days was barely known or talked about at all and there certainly wasn't as much known about mental health conditions as there are nowadays. Either way, it doesn't take anything away from how great Robert was as a musician, artist, composer and as a man, may he always be resting in eternal heaven 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Loved this movie !! The Guitar battle between Macchio and Vai was SICK !!! 🤘But truth or fiction I'm going nowhere near any " Crossroads" !! EVER !! Yes I do believe !! ✌️
