Asking for a friend He has a 9.8 2S but can't fit a 12 impeller, his shaft measures 13 .8mm same as a 9.9. Ist it possible someone has fitted a 9.9 drive shaft, is this possible? Thanks in advance
Great content as usual mate! I have also noted a combination of chopped and cloth works great together, the cloth is consuming any excessive resin from the csm. This way you can achieve almost 50/50 resin/fiberglass weight distribution with hand laminating.
Hey legend I got this exact same motor. Last trip out ran well as normal all day. Towards end of the day heading back to boat ramp she cut out. Started up fine soon as I put into gear it just killed the motor did this 3 times. Then decided to use the electric motor to get the last 200m back to ramp. When flushed the motor 15mins later it started fine tried putting into gear and was okay.. thoughts? + enjoying the channel mate really handy tips
Hi Mate, That’s frustrating 🤦♂️ Finally, starting it up when it’s out of the water is not a great test as with the back pressure when it’s more submerged on the boat it will stall much easier. Did you notice large amounts of steam when you slowed down when it was running well. I have had a motor slightly lock up due to picking up weed and causing an overheat. I would do a compression test just to settle that. If that’s all good, I would do a carburetor overhaul (I have a video on how to do that on the channel for this motor). If that doesn’t work either then check fuel lines for leaks. hoping it just needs a carb overhaul mate. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Bought a Ron Hill Semi Cleaver and shes a little out of balance. Im about to perform a balance out on it. Shows that even hifh dollar props can be out of balance. Thanks for the info! Be safe out there!
Hi Mate, Singing props can be a hard one, it may help but possibly not. Are you sure it’s the prop or maybe another part like the keel or skeg, rudder or shaft etc, just covering a few bits as I’m not sure of your setup. Is it only at a certain speed? I really have not come across a singing prop on an outboard before. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
@@25hpboatracerman thank you for your reply 🍻… 2007 tohatsu 30hp four stroke on a deep v 14ft Lowe it’s only at 5mph and goes away at 6 mph, It first happened when I put a new 9 pitch prop on, when I switched back to my 13pitch the noise went away then I put on a 10.2x11 four blade and the noise came back I immediately put my 13pitch prop on while I was in the lake and the noise went away, put back on the 11pitch and the noise came back. It’s weird I don’t know what the think I’m at a loss, any ideas?
That is a wierd one mate. I would say if it only happens at 5mph then goes away at 6mph it is probably not going to cause any issues. I would say if it’s going it either a number of props it is most likely not a balance issue but more just the way the water is flowing. Does it feel like your trim tab is set on the correct angle while traveling at speed? Also changing engine height slightly may stop the sound of a different trim setting Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
@@25hpboatracerman I’m going to mess around with the trim, this is a good idea this is something I have tried yet and may be the cause. Thank you I’ll let your know 🍻
So when I trim the motor all the way up almost out of the water the whining goes away, I pulled over on the shore and changed out the prop and the whine went away.
So I have a 9 1/4 x 12" pitch that came as original fitment on a DF20A Suzuki which is way to tall and the response from the dealer of course was "Yeah we don't know why they fit a 12", nobody can use them." Didn't tell me that until after the sale of course and no suggestion of a swap either. Anyway I commonly use a 9 1/4 x 11 or 9 1/4 x 10 depending on the day but would like to play around with the 9 1/4 x 12 to see if I can do something with it. I can Tig weld and commonly repair props but have never done any modifications where would you start? I'm thinking maybe reshaping the rake of the blades to effectively reduce the pitch? Or do I reduce the overall dimensions to reduce the size of the blade including diameter? Not sure where to start. Thanks.
Hi Mate, Yep, often the smaller hp motors cone with stock props that are normally pitched for very light boats. With your 12p prop, it’s hard to take pitch away without re-bending the blades. Even reducing the diameter you still have the 12p - possibly more if you reduce diameter. One way is to beat the leading edge back up to reduce pitch but must be done evenly across all blades and not just at the very front, try to blend the bend from at least an inch to an inch and a half up the blade. It is not something I would normally tackle reducing a pitch unfortunately, it’s a tricky one without pitch blocks to re-pitch the prop. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
@@25hpboatracerman Thanks for the reply, that gives me a point to start from. Do you have a Facebook page? I would like to send you a few photos of an electric jacking plate I made to give you a few ideas.
Dude your content is just amazing! Where do you get the splined bushing from? From another prop, or can you buy these somewhere? Cheers mate, kepp up this great Work. Lots of love from germany ❤
Nice 👍 Glad to spread the word on that, it’s super important to make sure the boat props are balanced as otherwise the propeller shaft seals will be damaged and vibrations will waste power. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
gday mate im back again with another question: i wanted to prop my 5hp for underwater drive but i dont know what i need to get speed outa it what pitch and diameter i am completely clueless
Hi Mate, For normal running at factory depth the propellers that come on the motors are normally pretty close to what you need. For more speed, make the boat as light as possible and play with your trim settings. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
That video is of a modified 8hp. Yes you can modify any two stroke outboard, even the 2.5hp. you just need to make sure the gains are worth the effort. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
The speed you are getting out of that little outboard is absolutely amazing! Really love the rooster tail too! 😎 Interesting to see that the methods you use to cut, shape and balance props, are exactly how I modify my RC boat props! 😊I even use the exact same "epoxy and stainless dowels" method of securing props with brass bushes to suit smaller diameter shafts. In my experience, it's not a fool-proof method, as there is inherently a tiny amount of run-out with each bushing being applied, and these inaccuracies tend to "add up", sometimes resulting in a wobbly prop. Am I making any sense here? Just one final thought regarding the static balancing of RC props: I have a commercially available aluminium balance-tool-thingy, which also uses 2 conical end pieces to fit the prop snug and true to the shaft. The only difference with my setup compared to your much larger device, is that the shaft has been ground to a very sharp point at both ends. The shaft is supported at each pointy end by rare-earth magnets, which means that there is virtually zero friction when the prop is spun. This setup enables incredibly fine prop balancing. This kind of tool is not only used by RC boaters, but is widely used by RC airplane guys too.
Hi Champion, Yep, your making sense 👍 You definitely need to make sure that the bushes you insert and true and centered for sure. I used the same magnetic balancers with my rc propellers in the past, would love a giant setup like that. Thanks for your comments and input mate. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Sure Champ, Surprisingly I do have a video coming out this week on glassing that may answer your questions though. Also my transom video may help too, it’s on the channel Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Now the lower unit looks like a Sportmaster gear case. Awesome brother. You love the 2x Strokes, we call that mixing gas and hauling ass. Here in the States.
Cheers mate 👍 Got another boat to try it on that is 20kgs lighter, hoping for more than 40mph now 😂 vid will be coming in the future. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Cheers mate 👍 I have modified it a bit further with a smaller skeg and a better nose cone. Super fun making and testing that whole motor. All the best, Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Hi Mate, Unfortunately I am not sure for the 4 stroke Honda 6hp. it’s really not a motor that would be suited to modifying sadly. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Hi mate, Unfortunately you cannot find leaks like that. You would need to pressure test your lower unit - adding a certain pressure into the oil fill hole and seeing if it holds, if not, you look for where oil is leaking out one of the seals. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
@@25hpboatracerman thank you for the reply, I found water in my lower unit, I pressure tested, held pressure replaced felt under the fill screws and took my boat out today and there was no water in the lower unit so I think it was the washers on the screws
Good job mate the prop is looking mint. Is there any chance u can do some more outboard video stuff like outboard testing on tinnys thanks cheers mate.
Hi Mate, Thanks 😊 Yep, would love too do some more testing, just really haven’t had many small motors come through for ages. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Hi Champion, I can answer this question easily 👌 They only weigh 26kgs and that’s very light for nearly 10hp. They are pretty powerful and fast and very compact and easy to transport and store. Very easy to work on and super reliable. There is a local boat hire place near where I live that have these on all there boats and they get run through sand bars, mud flats, spend most days at full throttle and just keep going 😂. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
@@25hpboatracerman Thanks for that terrific answer. I've got an older one . Maybe a different version. Doesn't impress me at all. If I get it running properly then maybe I'll change my mind. Mine has a puddle line on the carb. Never seen such ridiculous carb apparatus like the accelerator pump and choke configuration and a puddle line.
@@gioscervelo Hi Champion. Thanks for your comments 👍 I’m not sure what a puddle line is, the normal 6 - 8 and 9.8 carb are very easy little carbs to work on and very standard with the fuel pump on the side. You can check out my carb overhaul video on the 9.8hp carb it will show you if yours is different. There was a very early 6 - 8 and 9.8hp version (Normally blue) that I have not had the chance to play with Cheers Aussie Boat Guy 😎
@@25hpboatracerman The puddle line is a small fuel like line that splits in 2 and drains excess oil and fuel from each side of the bottom of the crankcase (2 cyl) and directs it back into the carb for burning. If your interested I'll send you a pic of this (horrible) motor.
Super cool. Hats off to the doing it crew. After seeing your mods to aluminium props I have modified three props, what a difference it can make. 🤠 Only problem with the aluminium is how thin you can go at the tips... I think you"ve shown us a great alternative!
Thats so genius!! Thats double the speed I am achieving with my stock Tohatsu 8hp. But she cools herself now under full throttle. I love that motor but the placement of the Thermostat under the head is so stupid. What do you think are the easiest steps to gain more top end speed?
Thanks Mate 👍 Yep, the thermostat under the head is not ideal but glad you sorted your cooling. Easiest speed mod is lighter boat and prop - engine height. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Hi Mate, That’s awesome 👍 yeah playing with props is great fun and especially rewarding when the prop works really well. All the best, Aussie Boat Guy 😎
From an 8hp engine, that's amazing! When you balance the prop, did you compare the faces of each blde for equal thrust? I'd think that would be as important as weight balance
Hi Mate, Thanks for your comments. I didn’t change the face of each blade, just put a finish on it so the original shape was maintained. All material was removed from the back of the blades. I did check the pitch of each blade though to make sure the prop was good before starting on the project. I’m super happy with it, it performs better than I could have hoped. Cheers 🥂 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Dude i love this content, you truly know How to do stuff with boats and motors, i dont remember if i told you but i for the first time tested my winrace! I bought a winrace cleaver and it was rippin! I have not minutes the steering and a throttle lever but i just used the, Im not really sure of the name of it but the like handle on the Yamaha 9.9 to steer and throttle!
Cheers Champion. I’m so glad you got a winrace cleaver, they are very good props and as you know perform really well. Thanks for your support mate. Cheers 🍻 Aussie Boat Guy 😎
Mate, you are definitely a rare outboard enthusiast and a Central Coast legend. Thank you taking the time to record this clip and sharing it on RU-vid.
