Never let the British and Americans cover history. U.S. and British paratroopers were as useless as the Italians. Winston Churchill was the villain of Second World War. During World War II, Winston Churchill's focus was indeed on preserving the British Empire. Hitler could have wiped out the British at Dunkirk. In 1938 Churchill made a deal with Hitler, to attack Russia. Churchill caused the cold war and civil war in Greece after WW2 killing millions. Greece single-handedly defeated the Italians and it's often neglected in British American history. The war would have been over in a few months if Greece was given all the supplies the British got. Also neglected is the fact Greece never gave Churchill any permission to enter Greece with armed forces. Greece said that it would aggravate Hitler. And when the British arrived the Greeks expected arms and weapons but all the British had were WW1 weapons and they couldn't even speak Greek. My father described the British presence in Greece as quite pathetic. The German invasion, which followed the unauthorized British establishment, allowed German forces to advance from their controlled regions. Numerous British and some Greek soldiers were captured by the Germans and transported to POW camps in Germany; however, many were killed in American bombings, and a few who escaped made their way back to Greece. There was a significant desire among the Greek population for the British to depart, as they were perceived as ineffectual and accused of committing heinous crimes against Greek civilians.
My family lost 8 members in this war and now the new Nazis are back in control of Germany my Grandfather said they would Rise again at some point in my life and here we are
The day after tomorrow is the 77th commemoration walk in Oosterbeek. As far as I know there are no veterans left who experienced the battle of Arnhem, but we must never forget what the British and Polish soldiers did for our freedom. Freedom is not something you just get, you always have to maintain it and fight for it. That also applies now in this evil, crazy world where religious, fanatics, Nazis, Zionists and dictators are eager to take away our freedom.
Wonderful film. A complete side-issue: General Browning (played by Dirk Bogarde) was the husband of the writer, Daphne du Maurier, who film lovers may know as the author of Rebecca, The Birds, Jamaica Inn and Don't Look Now.
This plan should have been cancelled after discovering model and tanks in the area, but a lack of transport aircraft and faulty radios did not deter them from trying this flawed plan, another underpowered cock up instead of success ✌️❤️🇬🇧
Too underpowered and defences were far better than believed, worse they were sent with faulty radios, stupidly the importance of those Dutch bridges was already anticipated which made the whole plan an absurd waste of resources, paratroopers are always lightly armed which means the whole plan was lightly armed, over ambitious underpowered and much of it predictable, a spam in a can plan for disposable paratroopers. ✌️❤️🇬🇧
Nasa elementary pa lamang ako sa Lumang Bahay ng aking Lolo ng mapanood ko pelikulang ito... Velasquez Tondo Manila Mahilig akong manood ng war movies,,, My Uncle was a Valor Filipino Guerilla on WW2...
Complete history lie. Operation " The Market Garden" completely failed. Under Montgomery, who was an idiot. An idiot with a history of his family upper classes in England
There's something about movies made in the 70s, this is an absolute masterpiece. I first saw this as an air cadet back then in the cinema. That ending is epic. They deffo don't make them like this anymore.
Have seen this numerous times and loving history we all know how it went. Patton would have done a much better job but anyway, there's no changing the past...
Went to Arnhem for the 75th Anniversary, such a moving experience, now going again on the 18th September for 8 days for the 80th anniversary, I’m 70 now, so this will be my final time, as I served in a TA Parachute Battalion during the mid 80s this is a pilgrimage that has to done, Every Man an Emperor, so many young men lying at rest in Dutch cemeteries, and the Dutch look after them so well, Rest in Peace Warriors, 🇬🇧🇳🇱🇬🇧🇳🇱🇬🇧🇳🇱
Unlike popular portrayals of history, Eisenhower wasn't placed as the supreme commander beacause OF the USA, he was manipulated into the postion because OF the British, they did NOT want the US to pull out of the conflict. As to Paton, he was totally incompetent and if you wish to do some research you will find this, yes he did graduate from West Point but was also at Kasserine Pass, he was neither a tactical or logistical genius and IF Montgomery had to UNFETTERED assistance for Market Garden, which he DID NOT, the war would have been over by Dec 1944....to put it simply, up until the very last 6 months of WW2 the British had more troops, ships at sea , planes in the sky in actuall combat against the enemy in ALL theartres of the war ( One million soldiers in Burmah alone in 1944) but their resources had been drained and US preponderance started to exceed that of the British in the final 6 months of the way and the US did NOT want to share the victory as they wanted to dictate post war Europe.
It's a simple fact that Patton never fought an enemy on equal footing. He fought the Germans in August of 1918 when they were starving and had nothing left. He fought them in 1943 in North Africa when they were critically short on supplies and Rommel had already left. He fought a mish-mash of understrength German and Italian forces in Sicily. In '44, the Allies had total air supremacy and all the best German units were in the East fighting the Soviets, unless they had been transferred west to recuperate from their losses and just happened to be there when the Allies invaded France.
@@DomWeasel The unfortunate thing about history is it is written by people and those who read it usually don't do a lot or research and so lies, myths and oipinion aree traded for truth.
@@DomWeasel Unfortunaely people write history, unlike learning maths or language it is flawed and the person wishing to learn, reads the words of the writer , these are seldom facutal and are often founded on patriotic sentiment, wishes, myths and downright lies.
I lost three of my uncles during WW 11. One on D day and another for the battle for Caen 4 weeks later. The third uncle on my mothers side was in the parachute regiment, he died somewhere in Holland. We think it was during operation market garden at Arnham,,, His body was never found !!
Just a shame that the authenticity included endless dialogue that could not be understood. Why the Heck not give it in English? Just shows when realism is pointless.
Seeing Sean Connery as hesitant and not self assured person aint natural. Overall this is one of the most star studded movies ever made. Producers note: "Hire all male movie stars" and "Find every flyable C-47/DC-3 in Europe".
@kimmoj2570 This aint computer stuff, they actually found DC-3s as far as Finland, painted them to period camouflage, and had massess of parachutist extras to jump from them.
@@HamishBanish its a reflection on dickie, not the British army. Anti war theme was layed on far too thick. Lets be honest, later he did ghandi, which while also a great film, smacks off massive anti british sentiment. Hes grinding about four axes with each film he makes, which while that is his perogative, dont excpect me to ask how high when he shouts jump.
Good thing this great movie was made before DEI racial quotas, Did Not Earn It. If they had a choice, the left would have Von Rundstedt played by a black cokehead, Montgomery would be a gay lesbian, and a squad of trans dudes in lederhosen would conquer the bridge at Arnhem
Good film with great cast, but like most, filled with factual inaccuracies. James Caans' rather large scene was embellished, there was no chase in a Jeep and the Americans were portrayed as good as possible for the USA film market. The British Officer Browning, played by Bogarde, was more molevolent than the Germans, in the film! Attenborough directing, was a socialist/Labour Party member and keen to keep up the 'lions led by donkeys', in his stance against the establishment. The fictitious character Colonel Stout played by Elliott Gould, seems to spend as much time pushing against the British 'military bureaucracy' as he does fighting the Germans.....got to keep the US film-goers happy, to keep the dollars rolling in.
