Simple, clear guitar lessons, for beginners and beyond.

My mission is to empower you to play guitar and have fun.

I have always found most music lessons too complicated and not focused on practical playing. I have become the teacher I wish I had when I was starting out: simple, clear, PRACTICAL and effective.

There are several series of guitar lessons here:

"Learn to Improvise Lead Guitar with the Chop Shop" is a lead guitar course. This is a method many pros use. Now you can join them.

The "Hand Magic" series teach simple techniques to learn guitar faster and get great results with less effort. These are the "wish I'd known that when I started" lessons.

"Intro to Fingerstyle" is my own, different approach to teaching fingerstyle in a very simple and straightforward way.

Muahahaha we brass players don’t need to do that, only when there’s a change in temperature (but many still do because it’s a good practice!)

Wes Montgomery complained back in the 60s that it's nearly impossible to tune the guitar properly. However, even though brass players have an easier time, still, every chance we get we should practice careful listening. It helps us with everything.

How about setting the action on your guitar as low as possible, use lower gauge strings, and most of all, press the strings only as lightly as really necessary? I used to have 5 mm thick calluses on my fretting hand until I did all the above several years ago, now I've been playing for years with minimal calluses and no real pain....

It is true that playing the right guitar setup properly is very important, as you know. It does make a great difference. However, guitar setup is a whole subject unto itself, and that was beyond the scope of this video. I have one video on my channel about adjusting neck relief, and one about choosing the right guitar. And I have several videos about left hand technique, including precision of fingering and lighter finger pressure. I support the approach you have wisely taken, but you are correct: this video does not address all those factors. I will create one that does. Thanks for your comment!

Here's a tip that actually causes pain, but if you can do it, you'll develop calluses FAST : play the opening riff to "When I'm Lonely" by Hootie and the Blowfish until your fingertips are absolutely on FIRE! Then go wash a decent sized load of dishes by hand, or soak in a bath for awhile, and the calluses will fall off. After your hands are completely dry again, pick up your guitar and play, but only for a few minutes. Then start the process all over again the next day, and keep doing that until you eventually reach the point where the calluses stop falling off after they've been in water, and that does eventually happen. But, this is more for first time learners, not people getting back into it after several years, because I'm pretty sure you're only going to have the patience to do this once.
@bonarsmusic01
@bonarsmusic01 2 месяца назад
Not sure I endorse this. I am more of a "baby steps" kind of guy, but I am sure your "extreme callus" method works - for the "hardcore" student. 😃

Sorry, not being grumpy. But if you were serious about 12 winds, then you are mistaken. You literally only require 2 or 3 winds around the capstan. Honest. I really know this stuff. This is the engineering magic of the concave tapered capstan. It uses an ancient design derived from the cleats used to tie off rigging on a sailboat. The taper of the capstan squeezes the guitar sting into position, and locks it in. Even with only two winds around the capstan. I promise!
