Satisfy to watch, but satisfying to listen to as well, some great music choices 👍 How do you finish your sticks? I’ve just made my first ever walking stick (just uploaded a video about it) and I used a beeswax and almond oil blend but I’m looking to tryout different finishes.
@CoupleofBunkies

We are using polyurethane to seal our sticks I have had little to no luck with beeswax but the Tung oil finish is one of my favorites. Good luck on your videos

@@CoupleofBunkies Hmm I don’t think I’ve come across using polyurethane before, so I’ll add that too the research list. Tung oil has been one I’ve wanted to tryout but as I don’t have much money to spend on this hobby yet I’m trying to pick something I’ll use a lot.

Great end result from using simple tools! I don’t yet own a belt sander so I’ve only used a carving knife and sanding paper to make the twists in my staffs/ wands. I’ve just released a video of my first walking stick attempt, would love to see what you think if you fancy watching it 👍

Thanks for this. I bought a similar Grizzly unit in the 80's and had it on its own 220 circuit. I'm now in a situation where I can't run it on 220. The motor on mine is actually marked 110/220 so I knew it could be converted but the information wasn't in the very sparse manual they sent decades ago when I bought it. I figured I was going to have to buy a 110 unit but thanks to your video I found the wiring diagram under the plate. I get to keep an old friend and yes, I know all about the efficiency issues of switching it to 110. It's not going to be an issue for me.

As I understand it, in the Harvey separator, which is the big expensive one, there’s a cone first to separate out the large particles, and then the fins spin the small particles and separate those out. The jet design has these reversed, which means the fins get clogged with large particles. it looks like the jet is a bad design.

I have a friend who works with an Amish Mill that clears brush and woods from farmland He is out of North Eastern Ohio. If you PM me on one of the social media links are in the channel page I can get you his contact. The wood starts off as a 2s2 rough cut most of the time depending on what I am making. This was one someone else turned and cracks developed they did not want to risk turning it further it was sanded and finished. and did not sell for around 2 years so I asked if they would throw it in for free with an order they did and after it was complete we got 75 for it from some guy in Texas.

Thank you so much for your kind words. It's sweet when you come across branches with natural vines coiling around them. I often joke that I sell walking sticks because money does not grow on trees but sticks do. Nature truly provides some amazing inspiration for crafting unique walking sticks. It's fascinating how each stick can take on its own character and shape, especially with the natural twists and turns formed by vines. Turning them into snake walking sticks sounds like a creative and fun idea that I need to explore! Collecting them on hikes is a rewarding experience like a treasure hunt. I'm glad you enjoyed the craftsmanship of the walking stick in the video. Crafting these pieces is a labor of love, and it's incredibly rewarding to hear that it resonates with fellow enthusiasts like yourself. Thank you for your support and appreciation!

The problem with downgrading from 220 volts to 110 volts is that you double the amperage. For example, I have an air compressor that uses 230 volts, 16.5 Amps, so if I downgrade to 115 volts it goes to 33 Amps.

Good move upgrading to 220v. Also, if you want to get rid of your generator isolation switch in your power panel, you can buy a Generlink Transfer Switch that plugs into your electric power meter. It also helps to have an inverter generator to condition the power to work with sensitive electronics.

Thanks for the honest look. I think one of the others was right, if they made the infeed tube just a bit longer so the fins weren't quite at such a steep curve it probably would take care of the problem. Or something that would initially break up any clumps coming through a little bit might also help.

I know I'm late to comment, but I have used this separator for about 3 years. I operate a small custom cabinet shop and buy all my wood directly from local mills. So, all my wood needs to be flattened and planed. I can count on 1 hand the number of times the separator has clogged up. It is connected to a 1250 CFM JET collector with 4" flex hoses. I was noticing how wildly the input hose jerks around while you're planing. The hose on my machine barely moves. Also, the size of chips you're creating are way bigger than mine. I have 13" and 15" planers and 8" and 12" jointers. None of them have helix or spiral heads. Not sure what the problem is, just a couple observations. Thx.
@CoupleofBunkies
@CoupleofBunkies 7 месяцев назад
Thank you for watching the video and its never too late to comment. I am now wondering if the issue is not the jet but a flaw in the planer. most 13 in planer have an air assist the 12.5 don't and the hose on it start off at a 90. consider subscribing and thanks for the feed back.

it will work fine if you upgrade your thickness planer to shelix head, it blocking up because your full length planer blades thats your problem would be an issue for nearly all separators
@CoupleofBunkies
@CoupleofBunkies 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for your input! We appreciate your suggestion about upgrading to a shelix head for our thickness planer. It's a valid point that the full-length planer blades is causing the blocking issue with the dust separator. The helical heads have many benefits: Quieter, more blades if you find a nail, better finish, and cheaper replacement blades. I have been interested in upgrading our planer, but $625 Fix Is cool, and it would make a great video Or we could Bypass the separator for free or spend that $625 on a better dust collector. I would think that running board grain parallel to knives would give you longer wood shavings and a higher possibility for clogging. Another contributing factor is the feed rate of the stock. Did you experience the same results when feeding the boards normally into the planer?

Thanks for the review, I was looking at getting one of these, but after seeing all the clogging, I think I'll be getting a Super Dust Deputy 4/5 Cyclone by Oneida and hooking it up to a 55 gallon barrel. I'm getting a Record Power CamVac 90L 4HP Dust Extractor which has a tone of static pressure so I don't think that will be an issue. It just doesn't have a lot of capacity to hold chips so the 55 gallon drum is the answer and having a chip extractor was my solution.
@CoupleofBunkies
@CoupleofBunkies 7 месяцев назад
You're welcome! It sounds like you've put a lot of thought into your dust collection setup. The Super Dust Deputy by Oneida is a popular choice for efficient chip separation, and connecting it to a 55-gallon barrel should indeed provide lots of capacity. I tried to look up Record Power CamVac 90L 4HP Dust Extractor and it does not look like its available in the US but it sounds like a well-considered solution. The combination of effective chip separation and strong suction power should contribute to a more efficient dust collection system in your workshop. If you have any more questions or need further advice as you set up your system, feel free to ask but we are not experts we can share our experiences and subscribe for more videos. Happy woodworking!

I have never seen anyone run a board through a planer across the grain. I would think the surface quality would be rougher doing it this way rather than with the grain. Also, the shavings are probably even longer and more apt to clog the separator. I would recommend taking no more than a 1/32" pass with light duty machines like your DeWalt. Especially with wide boards.

This separator was $80 at Woodcraft and I decided to give it a go. No issues at all so far, tried jointing and then planing a 11" wide piece of ash and everything went well. How much wood are you taking off with each pass? I do 1 mm (~3/64") passes at the planer and 1.5 mm (1/16") at the jointer. No clogs. Judging by the video, your Dewalt produces giant shavings. Mine are much smaller. I have a 2 knife cutterhead Inca. There is also a fan on Dewalt that creates extra airflow, maybe that somehow messes with the Jet? Any way to turn that fan off? If it's clogging like that, it means shavings are traveling too fast, you need to reduce air speed. Maybe use a longer hose (from tool to Jet) and make a loop in the middle to add some resistance?

First off thanks for watching and consider subscribing. The dewalt734 has 3 blades and only one speed and no fan we had a lot of issues at first due to the discharge shoot starts off at 90 so you may have a point that it may be the planer and not the sepporator. The most we take off is 1/16, just like you stated any bigger and the planer can't take it. I have had to take smaller rounds with wood like osage orange and hickory. It may work perfectly in another shop I just feel that the dust separator should be able to handle most beginner woodworkers like me who grab the first planer from homedepo to get started. and in the end we spent 150 at the time I feel it would have been better to spend that on upgrading the dust collector or on a better planer. we used 3 different dust collectors so I don't think speed was a factor but the dewalts 90-degree angle might have clumped up the shavings so it overloads the teeth on the jet.

The problem with the JET separator is not the the concept, but the excution. The lead in portion is just too short foring the fins making sharp turns and creating narrow passways. Also, to be fair, planers with straight knives clogs a lot of things. The 4" port on my 6" jointer gets clogged from time to time on my dust collector without any separator.

Thanks for the feed back. and I checked out your channel and subscribed. I agree with every thing you have stated. I reached out to Jet 3 years ago concerning required cfm with no reply I always felt it was lack of suction. but my conclusion is I was better off buying a better dust collector or upgrading my planer to one that has a spiral or a helical cutting head.
