The song itself is called Gion Kouta, and it sings of the seasons and the singer's love of the Gion Hanamachi

People who sing, when maiko/geiko is dancing, are usually jikata geiko (earth geiko, in reference to sitting position), which means geiko specialised in singing and playing instruments (opposite to tachikata geiko, which is dancer geiko)

@Aruchinjiru the obi is not a ribbon, it's a sash

@takaigaijin The singer is the jikata, the dancer is the tachikata.

Does anyone have trouble deciphering this? I couldn't see very many moves that made me think of a butterfly...or what the butterfly was doing. Do the different moves just mean different things?

@pinksalamanders also depends on the material the stage is made of. I seen dances where they stomp their feet but cause of the material of the stage, or floor they're on, some didn't make much noise. You can tell they stomped cause you can still hear it, but wasn't as loud as how she did it.. but yea.. specially since she doesn't lift her feet up that high to be able to bring it down hard enough to really stomp so loud. awesome job though awesome. ENCORE... oh yeah I can just hit play again.lol

@isapheonix Some time ago young children were, you could say, forced into the geisha arts but now it's completely and utterly a choice; girls now choose to follow this occupation so I would say yes she's probably thrilled to be doing what she is doing.

@osbourn15 i totally agree with you. Ichikawa is my most favorite. her body movement is perfect compared to other maikos. and she is very pretty :)

she is my most favorite maiko. the flow of her body movement is so smooth. also, i like her kimono. not gaudy and its color perfectly matches her white makeup. plus, i like her looks. she is so pretty :)

Actually this song and dance is called "Gion Kouta" or the "Song of Gion." It's mainly about the lifestyle and beauty of Gion (a Geisha district). The chorus focuses on adoring the Maiko's beautiful long obi (ribbon).
