As a Brazilian, I don't recognize the way they are dancing as samba. The dance is beautiful, but I wouldn't call it samba. Samba movements can be fast, but they are continuous swinging movements and not with sudden movements and without those exaggerated postures and movements of the dancers shown in the video. Samba is not swinging just like that, it has a whole technique. The steps can be the same for men and women, but there is one big difference: the woman swings more with her hips, while the man just does the leg movements without moving his hips much. It's no use for a person to know how to reproduce the steps of samba if he doesn't know how to dance to the rhythm and shake his body correctly, because samba is all of this set in a right balance. To give you an idea, there are many Brazilians who don't know how to samba, only those who really like this style make an effort to learn it. If you really want to learn samba, you might need to learn it here in Brazil or look for a Brazilian dance school with Brazilian teachers. Note that the posture of Brazilian dancers is relaxed and their movements are fluid and not with rigid posture and abrupt movements. Samba is the whole set: music, steps, rhythm, swinging, relaxed posture and fluid movements. It's not samba if the music isn't samba either. A foreigner cannot dance just about anything, put a few steps imitating samba in the middle of the dance and say that the whole dance is about samba.

In Brazil there are the types of samba below, which are the main ones: CARNIVAL SAMBA from Rio de Janeiro (SAMBA NO PÉ): ru-vid.comqkiUns5jwic ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PrQDiP0jkN4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zJwtGvKUpgA.html - Note: some of these moves are only for women (if men do these moves they will be considered gay by Brazilians). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4DZ00HB5ZV0.html - men mostly dance samba with this movement, as they only accompany the women, who are the true queens of samba. The songs of the samba schools that are played in the sambodromo during the carnival in Rio de Janeiro are too fast for those who want to learn samba (Samba no Pé), so I recommend learning first with slower sambas like below, for example, that show various rhythms and of various speeds, being a challenge for the apprentice dancers to capture the rhythm and dance correctly in that rhythm.: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h9e8M-wZQGc.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4rqHyIbuh2o.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ODu3OfgnssM.html GAFIEIRA SAMBA (couple samba): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V46va2-W27k.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zTIeIdVbL_w.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--7FiMNnVoKQ.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_lmxvSlzM0U.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-esaWBiFXIss.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gxalWz6ECaY.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KNJud2zFf3o.html There are specific songs for dancing Gafieira Samba, because the rhythm and speed are different from the carnival samba. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OE02BM3tKes.html www.youtube.com/@GafieiraPraDancar/videos These RU-vid channels teach you how to dance Gafieira Samba: www.youtube.com/@CanaldoSambadeGafieira/videos www.youtube.com/@tematicoscosta/search?query=gafieira SAMBA REGGAE from Bahia state: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pp6-XG1DcE4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PZS22kR3BQI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7PLSVBRUVn0.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wLkrEYuC61g.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UoMSnTbCB_U.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WppkNUe9QPM.html Samba Reggae Songs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nOWioy8qS04.html&start_radio=1&rv=nOWioy8qS04&t=34 Realize that samba reggae from Bahia state is very different from the samba drumming of the carnival from Rio de Janeiro, but both have an African influence. Samba Reggae: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HGEq-Z5DXFY.html Carnival Samba: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RP5r2wi98aA.html Don't mix Samba no Pé steps with Samba Reggae steps as each one has its own rhythm, which often don't match each other. There is also SAMBA-ROCK (couple samba), which is a variation, created in the state of São Paulo: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E4uwkNb2tHc.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0MwSVrpwvUA.html www.youtube.com/@SambaRockCultural/videos?view=0&sort=p&shelf_id=0 Samba-Rock Songs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hpa7lcA0vfQ.html Many people learn the steps of samba, but dance outside the rhythm of the drums and the other instruments (called "batucada"). Brazilians who know samba well know when the person is not following the rhythm of the batucada correctly, that they are dancing slower or faster than the rhythm of the music.
There are a lot of waltz figures and I know some of them, especially in International Style. The Turning Lock To R is usually commenced with a 1-3 of Natural Turn into a Spin Turn (Natural Spin Turn) before the Turning Lock happens, and I know the timing of the Turning Lock is "1 and 2 3". How about that!
So the amalgamation is - Fallaway Reverse and Slip Pivot (1 and 2 3) - something like a Quick Open Reverse Open Telemark (1 2 3) Syncopated Curved Wing to L (1 and 2 3) {At this point, you can also do a Double Reverse Spin With Wing Ending in place of it} Standing Spin, With The First Measure of It Involving The Man Doing a Rudolph Ronde During That Spin, and then To Normal Circular Twist-Pivot, While Lady Does Running Syncopated Steps (1 and 2 and 3 and 1 and 2 and 3 and 1 and 2 and 3 and) Rumba Cross Check To Steps 2-3 of Outside Change (1 and 2 3), now ending in PP {or option of doing Steps 2-3 of Open Telemark Instead of 2-3 of Outside Change} Progressive Chasse now in PP (1 2 and 3)
I recognized Laird's samba movements. I recognized the Basic Movement, Closed Rocks, Reverse Turn with a bit of Roll Action, Plait, Samba Walk with Side Samba Walk, Criss Cross Bota Fogos, Criss Cross Voltas.
I was expecting heavy use of "syncopated guapacha rhythm" in this short routine, because this is "novice level" material in International cha-cha. I did not see this, but this is still a good competition-level short combo for cha-cha......loved the S-drop! Love doing the S-Drop!
So with Walter Laird, we have the ISTD syllabus for International Cha-Cha. But I have learned that type of cha-cha for years in the ballroom and out of it. My favorite Intermediate Cha-Cha Short Routine, inspired by Walter, would be this - - Basic < Opening Out to Fan < Hockey Stick into NY R for Man < NY L for Man < Syncopated NY R and L for Man > NY R for Man (check) back into Side Chasse LRL > Aida > Hip Rocks Back to 2-Handed Open Facing > Spot Turns and Back to Open Facing
I love the polite understated applause that the audience give during this stunning performance by Marcus and Karen. Their artistry, chemistry and musicality was perfection in motion. They can never be surpassed. They truly are the greatest of all time.
Thank you very much :) I really love these old stuff and nice work on the documentation. Would be really awesome if you have "Light and Shade" by Marcus and Karen too.
