great build. An alternative Pixel control to look at is the Dig-Octa board. While its 8 outputs might not handle the same number of pixels, its way way cheaper and can run standalone due to running WLED. and multiple boards can sync to eachother when doing standalone mode.

That looks really interesting. Love the price. Still trying to wrap my head around the options. I’d like to split up the power across 2 power supplies to keep the fans from having to kick on all the time. Doesn’t look like I can do that with the Dig power board but I’ll keep researching it :)

I've just started learning about using RTA and how to ring out a mic and doing so with Presonus Universal Control and the rack 32R mixer. Some questions for you. If you use the channel EQ to sweep the frequencies to find the offending ones and make the necessary changes to the GEQ do you eventually go back to the channel settings and do any further EQ changes for the vocals? I'm trying to understand whether the GEQ setting changes are enough to minimize feedback while then making additional EQ edits on the channel. Can you please share how these both (channel EQ and GEQ) affect each other?

@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 2 месяца назад
You can use inserts like in the video but only on a certain number of channels since you have a limited number of external insert slots available. You can also double-patch channels but, unless you only need a small number of channels, this can be very wasteful. Or you can get a separate console for monitors and send the unprocessed channels to that monitor console.

If I would trigger some drum sound from say Ableton, what’s the latency ? Is it noticeable ?
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 2 месяца назад
Depends on how powerful your computer is and whether or not you can run a super low buffer size. Also, if you’re blending triggers with the dry drum sounds, for the best results, you’ll want to delay the dry drums. That’ll be hard to do on the XR18 since I don’t believe there is channel delay on that mixer. You’d have to send them to a bus with a delay rack effect inserted and adjust the delay there - with no delay feedback and with the filters turned off. Soooo… is it possible? Yes. Is it worth it? That’s up to you. If you decide to do it, let me know how it went :) -Chad

Hello Chad, this was very helpful. How can I send my parallel compression to my live stream buses?
@AWTechTuesday
@AWTechTuesday 2 месяца назад
There are a few ways. My first thought would be to use a pair of matrices for you stream. On the X32, you can send mixes to matrices just like how you can send individual channels to a mix. An example of this would be you using 3 pairs of mixes and one pair of matrices: Drums compressed, drums uncompressed, and all of your other channels (and you can break those up more if you have enough busses to do so) all going into your livestream matrix. I hope that helps! -Chad

My band as M32C and DL32. They want this to be their IEM rack and control Preamps of the DL32. Then, they want to use AES50 to send those inputs to a venue FOH X32 mixer. I am trying to wrap my head around this. Here's what I have: DL32 configured as master clock (48k). DL32 AES A connected to M32C AES50 A. M32C set Sync to AES50A, and routed with AES50A as input sources 1-32. M32C set to Lock the stagebox. M32C set to control AES50A preamps. M32C is also routing outputs to AES50A for buses 1-10 for IEMs. Then, DL32 AES50 B connected to FOH x32 AES50 A port. X32 FOH set Sync to AES50A, and routed with AES50A as input sources 1-32. This should give FOH all our DL32 inputs with Gain Trim only. Thus, they can mix FOH as they see fit for the venue. There is no need to send audio from M32C to X32 or vice versa. They simply want to share the DL32 as if it was a physical splitter snake. Will this work? Is there something wrong with this solution???

You’re welcome for the full fader paging and glad to see others are using it too. I’d requested that one back in the early 1.x days and it’s been great to expand the custom layers on the left bank. I have a few items like a two channel electric and bass that I use DCA’s for on the primary layer, then have the contributing channels and DCA’s on the 13-24 bank. I used to jones for DCA spill, but I’ve been using the custom layers to replace the need for it on the Wing. I wouldn’t want to use an X/M32 without though.

In my country, everyone who mixes to unity is studio / DAW trained, or a "producer". Every single time. There are a couple studio trained guys who are good at live sound, but the rest of them suck. Mostly because they try to use all the same settings in a live show that work in a DAW when mixing & mastering for Spotify or other online music service. And of course, they just doesn't work in live sound. I was supposed to be a guest engineer at a double header where a friend's band was playing. The lead engineer started yelling at me when I started adjusting faders. I was like, here, you keep at it bro, & walked off. He was literally mixing on the makeup gain of the compressors. He is a "studio recording engineer". Not worth arguing with someone that stupid. If you are not supposed to use the faders, why is it that every console has them, I wonder? Recently, I was doing sound for small indoor festival (it's rainy season). The event was organized, as it turned out, by a young "producer". He comes over to me and says "why do the drums sound like that?". "Like what, bro", I ask. "Like THAT" he says. I realized, given that he'd literally just knelt down on stage as I was playing a test track & said "it's vibrating" that he literally had no experience with live music shows & real power. So I hit the mute on the drum VCA, and replied "because that's how they sound ACOUSTICALLY, in real life... listen carefully, they are not being amplified right now". He actually thought that you could just pick how you wanted each drum to sound, like using Steven Slate Drums or Spitfire VST in a DAW. He then proceeded to tell me exactly how he wanted the band on stage to sound (I'd already finished their sound check & was completely happy with the sound). I made his requested adjustments & he was like yah, that's great & took off. The lighting tech looks at me & says "Your mix was WAY better". This is what you get from "producers & "studio experts", in my country anyway - mostly madness.

100%! I used to work at a venue as a FOH engineer. From time to time we would get a band with their own engineer who went to a popular school for music production. These guys knew ProTools well enough but had no idea how to handle an analog console (this was years ago). They didn’t understand that you can’t EQ and compress the same way as the studio with a live PA without accounting for feedback. It was really sad most times.

I never thought of using the M/C as a verb send. This will be very handy for things that either need a lot of verb level changes (lead vocal or snare), or things that are seldom send to verb, but when verb is desired it needs to be done quickly, such as turning up a guitar for a solo and taking it from 0 verb to a fair bit of verb. Thanks!
