While I prefer the more underexposed photo in this example, the techniques you showed are very welcome and I'm definitely gonna use them in some scenarios instead of the exposure slider. Thanks!

For landscape I use my 100-400mm more than any other lens, A distance second in my 24-70. Only occasionally do I need the 14-24. I haven't touched my 70-200 since I got the 100-400.

I have 3 prime lenses that do not provide metadata--manual focus, no electrical connection with the camera--so the Lightroom metadata function isn't helpful. That said, I consider myself an introvert but my "only one lens" is my 25mm f/2, manual focus on my Sony a6600--so, a 37mm full-frame equivalent. But I use the combo "from the shadows." I'm not an in-your-face" photographer. I shoot from the hip, I'll shoot in silent mode or my favorite: I set my camera on the table at a cafe (outside table) and control the shutter with my phone, so people can't see that i'm making photos. The combo is very compact (it's the Ttartisans 25mm, for $80), very unobtrusive.

If I had to choose one lens , it would be the 50mm. And I think I lean towards extroverted:

I can't say what focal length I use the absolute most but I have found that I rarely need more than 400MM and rarely less than 18MM. And because I'm a fan of compact and light weight do it all rigs at the expense of absolute precision I'd probably go with a Sony APS-C body and the Tamron 18-300 lens. I'm somewhat in between introvert and extrovert. I like my weekends open but have no problem making and keeping plans or being in crowds. I just don't want to be committed all the time.

Hey, having just found your channel I am enjoying your detailed and well-thought-out examples. I wonder why you are not using a quicker way to place a mask across the whole image? An old trick. Use the Linear Gradient, but make your photo small enough and then click say to the left outside of the photo and drag right. This puts a mask across the whole image; quicker than the brush.

even though I knew about this, was a nice refresher. Ive been struggling with landscape shots as of late and was exposing for the sky and the foreground was always way too dark. thanks! earned a new subscriber

In my opinion, your edited photo looks way better than the one with the exposure bump, but what a convoluted way to achieve it. As someone whose knowledge of Lr is limited, or more importantly, my patience level using it is very thin. I should try some of your courses That would probably negate the cursing and maybe increase my patience level should I become more proficient. Anyway, I have subscribed.

It seems like most raw processing creates a painting, an artificial view of a scene. I prefer a real image in my photo, not an unreal image

I took a look back at my photos. It appears my personality has changed as I used to be the big scene guy, but now use much longer lenses. I honestly believe it is more to do with my physical ability and restrictions than my personality. I can't necessarily get to the places I want, but rather are restricted to what I can do with some mobility issues. Getting old suck!!!

Interesting discussion but I'm not convinced. It's like asking what your favorite sauce is, catsup or salsa? Well that depends on what I'm eating. If I'm given a taco, there is no way I'm putting catsup on it no mater what. Any given scene will require different types of lenses depending on your artistic vision for that scene. Also, I was a little confused by your choice of favorite focal length. You chose the Sony 100-400mm yet you shoot FujiFilm MF which to my knowledge doesn't have any tele lenses longer than 100mm other than the 500mm prime. Just curious.

Very useful video. However, one of the most powerful characteristics of LR is the ability to achieve a final result through multiple, personal preferences, pathways (...even more so in Photoshop...). If you follow a processing solution all the way to the end and just leave the alternate solution right on the very first step, then a comparasion between the 2 is not a valid one.

I think it might also depend on what your genre of photography you mostly undertake I mostly shoot nature/wildlife so will generally use longer lenses, but maybe that style also reflects my personality happy to spend lengthy periods of time alone or with just one or two friends quietly watching and observing. I see where you are coming from up close and personal Vs standing back but I think the question is perhaps more complex. I very much enjoy your videos they are informative unhurried and a pleasure to watch. Thank you

OK, despite the teaser topic line I decided to watch it and you wasted 1:10 of my time before getting started. This video has had a million views! That's cool, but that means you've wasted a million minutes of viewers' lives. That's literally two years of life. When you're making a video to explain something, just start explaining it. You don't need to walk us through what scenario might have led us to click your link--we already know why we clicked the link.

Hmm - what an interesting theory. I tend to use my 16-50mm lens more than any of my others and, although I’m happy straying from a group for photos that catch my eye, and am comfortable on my own, I like meeting people and enjoy their company. One of my best photo friends uses her 100-400mm lens about 75-80% of the time when we go out shooting together and she is a self-confessed introvert!

I like your statement very much. Too many photographers are fainthearted and poorly educated when it comes to higher ISO values, but it depends: point&shoot cameras with small sensors are not the best choice to crank up ISO. Your GFX will produce cleaner images just because of the bigger sensor. I also like to mention: As good as IBIS has become, it‘s no cure for moving objects, only to reduce my own motion - which is plenty to achieve.

I say eye soh. When we were doing quality audits to get certified at work every one called it eye soh. Modern cameras are great. Back 20 years ago iso800 was the highest you would go without horrible looking grain. So if you were shooting in low light you needed expensive glass like F1.4. Now an hobbyist can get great results using cheaper F1.8 prime lens using ISO higher than 800.

I recall the Northrups covering this topic some years ago. We often hear people say "high ISO causes noise". But in truth it is poor "signal to gain ratio" that causes noise, or in other words low light. Do that picture comparison you're talking about with a very well lit scene (one high, one low ISO), then do it with a very dimly lit scene and compare those results. You will see a dramatic difference. The truth though is that today's cameras just have better sensors and can compensate for low light with higher ISO much more effectively than old gear did. I think maybe people just getting into photography might not be as fussed as us older guys by this topic.

That’s interesting, I immediately saw which was the better image before you even zoomed in and I’m only viewing this on my phone. The more detailed areas of the image on the left seemed to be lacking something. When it comes to analog photography film speed makes a massive difference, but developer does too. That left image looked like it could have been developed in Rodinal. 😃 I live in the U.K. where our cloud cover calls for 400 most of the time but 100 speed film looks a lot better when you can make it work.

I always forget to use a radial filter as a vignette so thanks for reminding me! My most used filter is probably linear gradient, but usually intersected or subtracted with another filter to shape light on certain objects in the image like the foreground log in your image. Really love your videos and have learnt a lot watching them. Great teaching style!
