Very nice. I am just st about ready to get started on my build. My question is about your deflector plate. Yours deflects down as do most u tube builds. Franklin smokers deflect up so the meat cooks top down for better rendering. Which would you think is better?
I actually took mine off about 6 months in to see the difference and there was no noticeable difference.. however my firebox is longer than most which gives me a good distance between the meat and the fire .. I think it is fine either way up or down ..
Nice smoker,I would have welded a 3/4" steel pipe with a threaded cap directly threw the top of smoker above water tray so you can easily ad water without opening door.
It’s a hard cut as you can see in mine I messed up and had to fix it .. I would use a piece of poster board to create the radius of the same size fire box .. I then cut it back to the flat part of the tank so the fire box and cook chamber sit flat .. also try and sneak up on the fit .. I originally wanted my fire box higher but when I messed up I had to make it fit with left over pieces.. hope this makes sense
No way!!!! This is so bad ass! That fire box is NICE! I bet being so big how long can you go in between splits? Thats what I like about the Chuds offset with the chud box/fire box its so big. I want to learn to weld just to make one lol!
At the time I built the smoker it cost about $600 .. prices obviously have since gone up .. yeah I like the longer fire box because I can push and pull the coals closer or further from the meat .. my first smoker I built the main problem was the fire box was to small .. so this one I went a little longer than what everyone is doing .. it works great .. learning to mig weld is easy you can learn In a couple of days ..
This is amazing work! Thank you for sharing and I hope you're still enjoying your smoker. I have come across a thick (about 5/16", maybe slightly more ) 67" x 20" diameter tank extremely well priced nearby that I am intending on sectioning down to around 44" or 46" and then using the other section as the firebox. Is the process basically just making two central cuts and rejoining the two outer sections?
Yes if it is a tank and you want the rounded ends you will rejoin one and use the other as the firebox . Obviously you will have to add sides to the firebox ..
Nice cooker, what are the dimensions for the base frame and the length of the legs and the angel cuts on them? Just trying to get an idea of how to make one.
Mine is 28x64 the long leg is 20” and the short is 10.5 .. not sure the angle i just kinda trimmed to fit .. once I figured out the rectangle and got that welded I put the fire box on Jack stand and rolled the base under it and welded up the legs then I get the tank on the firebox and suspended it with a engine hoist .. then measured the long legs
24x 54… I said 48 in the video but I meant 54 .. it was a 24x70 propane tank which i sectioned down.. I would recommend buying the size tank or pipe you want so you don’t have to section it .. it’s a lot of work
Great job! Thanks for showing us around your smoker!. And I can smell that BBQ from here! How did you know where to place the fire box in terms of height and penetration into the cook chamber. And how did you select the diameter of the exhaust pipe? Is it 100 gallons? Thanks in advance. I'd like to build my own too. Looks great!
Fire box height on this one is a little low .. I don’t think it matters to much but about half way is what Franklin recommends .. I went In about 4 inches which is where the ends become flat and not round so there would be a flat stop to weld to …the stack is 4.5” 39” long which is what I used on my last one and it pulled really well so I went with that again.
@@jfcustomfab Thanks for the reply. Again, hats off to you for the build. It really looks good. Cooking on something that you built is pretty cool too. Cheers Brother
