I’m a GRAMMY Award-winning viola professor @eastman.school making videos while traveling the world to perform concerts and teach.

My videos include the Sound Post series where I interview my friends and colleagues about their incredible instruments which include Stradivarius, Amati, & Guarneri - as well as many fantastic modern violins, violas, and cellos!

I also post videos from my recent performances and make videos on topics I am curious about, like making Beethoven's Coffee, developing better tempo recall, or how to celebrate Japanese New Year.

I was curious about how a large viola would be cut down, so I went googling and ran into this video. Now I'm really confused!!! A very interesting video!

Good for him! He got it🎉 I adore his "dancing" at the beginning of the Trailer, right on on his "Dance Movememts" 🎶🎻= a Cello for him, maybe he combines his" Cello Play" with his dancing🤔🎊🎻🕺

Omggg Ken Slowik! He is THE MAN - such an awesome incredible dude. One night we rehearsed in his studio, and I walked out with him from the museum with my quartet and he insisted on giving us step by step verb directions to get to highway. We all got in the car laughing about how detailed and long winded his directions were and used Google maps. 10 mins later we are waiting at a busy intersection, and Ken pops out literally from out of nowhere all the way down the road, beating us out of the city even though he left several minutes after us. Shoulda taken his advice

I had the great privilege of studying with Gary at Indiana University back in 1980 (when he was the youngest faculty member in IU history). I have to admit I was a bit heartbroken when he switched to the Amati since I was completely enamoured with the soulful beauty of his sound on his Vuillaume prior to that and for me that was the "Gary Hoffman sound". For a while it was like hearing someone speak with a different voice -- like a science fiction sort of body transplant. I've come to accept the beauty of the Amati and Gary's assertion that it was the right move, but I can also assert that his sound and expression were equally great before that in a different way!

Hello from Rochester! I'm an adult student. Been playing about 5 years now. I landed here as I'm looking for my next cello and after playing a Montagnana copy, fell in love with that sound! They are hard(er) to come by as people think they are "soooo" much wider. I did not notice it really. I am so amazed how many professional musicians I've seen online during my journey that come from right here in Rochester. I guess that Eastman school might have something to do with it. ;P

I would love to know what bow she uses. That’s also very important. And, how she says she shapes the voice of the violin; what techniques for that is she using or is it just happening from her playing it in normal practice.

At 14:41 a great testament to the expressiveness of gut strings in comparison, thanks so much! This does fully confirm my experiences in playing and listening as well. Isn't it that French Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique that uses all instruments and strings? I had heard them and loved them and then I was very pleased that they were playing on that wonderful British bio pic of Beethoven's first performance of the Eroica; "Eroica....The day that changed music forever'."

14:12 I was hoping there was going to be discussion of the gut strings! I find them to be more expressive on almost all if not every instrument. You can go from a warm place to a bright place if you want to it's not always bright like steel or plastic strings tend to be. I have a gut string snare drum that has a lot more expression than steel, the snare crescendo's not only in volume but in tone as well, with the steel it seems just as bright from the lower volumes to the higher volumes.

Mrs. Frautschi is wonderful, thank you for uploading this wonderful documentation! But, honestly, the sound of this specific Strad does not really excel to my humble ears. Even the colour of its varnish does not specifically look classic Italian to me.
