Okay... I'm 54 this year, and I want to do something different with my life. I've always enjoyed woodworking and in the past I've made some desks, cabinets, and other miscellaneous things - I find woodworking peaceful. I've been thinking about making things that could be sold on a craft fair, ETSY, or website, and of course cutting boards came to mind. My research took me into inlayed cutting boards using a CNC and the concept blows my mind. I've been consuming every CNC inlay video I could find, and today I found you. Wow! I'm mean, wow man. Outside of @Broinwood CNC work, I haven't found anyone doing inlays so detailed. Is this more of a hobby for you or a business? Also, what CNC are you using?
@MandSWoodworks
@MandSWoodworks День назад
First, thank you for the compliments! I sincerely appreciate it! Now, to your question: It is a hobby only for me. Like you mentioned, woodworking is also my peace. I tried years ago to sell my boards, but I don't have a website or the like to market them to the folks who would be willing to pay what they are worth. I have had locals inquire about making a board as complicated as this and when I tell them how much it costs, they run for the hills, and accuse me of gouging. The board on this video cost me a little over $350 in materials and well over 40 hours to make. I would ask anywhere from $1500 to $2000 for it. There are people out there that would pay that, but you have to market yourself so that they can find you. And that would take a website of your own and lots of advertising to do it. I don't think Etsy would be a good start, because there are literally hundreds of folks on Etsy making inlayed cutting boards, though not as complicated as this, they sell for less than $100. And your etsy page would be lost in the chaos unless your customers new to look for you specifically when they wanted to shop your offerings. So no, I keep this as a hobby so it'll remain a hobby that I enjoy, instead of it turning into another job where I have orders to fill and I dread having to go into my shop to feed the monster. I have a Onefinity Elite CNC. I hope this answers your questions. Thank you for watching!!

@@MandSWoodworks Thanks for the quick reply! I completely understand about pricing, but I think sourcing the wood would get costs down. I mean... How else could all these people charge what they charge. @TwoMooseDesign is charging $200-$400 for their boards. @Broinwood is for non-inlay is $80-$200, and inlay $300-$1.2K depending on the design. I think the guys on Etsy selling super cheap inlay are buying their boards cheap on Amazon, and reselling with the custom inlay. I was watching an interview with Ryan Drapela about his CNC business, dude is making millions a year, and he talked about cutting boards on Etsy and people reselling. I completely understand keeping it a hobby though. I really appreciate your time!

Great video! And a FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC board! Wish I could do that! (I'm working on it, though.) As for those who cruise around RU-vid, criticizing what other people do, it's like they never heard "If you can't say something nice, say nothing at all!" . . . or more importantly "Live and let live!". I suspect that these people are jealous, and use this as an excuse for why they can't do something that nice. A cnc is a tool, just like a table saw and/or a planer! It makes the work go faster, easier, with more accuracy and repeatability. If anyone could even make something like your cutting board without a cnc, which I doubt, it would literally take months. The time and effort would require a price that would be unsalable, just to say it was made with hand tools! I once attended a seminar on woodworking hand tools led by a woman, who insisted she didn't use, or even own any power tools, She did all her work with hand tools (mostly furniture)! It took longer, and of course, required a higher price. And she was really, really good! But was limited by such a restriction. I couldn't imagine using a hand saw and a dozen different hand planes in place of a table saw! And have you ever used one of those old eggbeater drills? I have, and it's a workout even in soft woods! EVERYTHING would take forever! And she might very well look down on the people who are looking down on you (and me) for using a cnc! I admire her, but it's not for me. I'd rather put more energy into getting projects done and moving on! To put things in perspective, Larry Bird got booed in Los Angeles, and Magic Johnson got booed in Boston. And both of them were champions! Ignore the booers (they will ALWAYS be there) and do what you do best!

Russell, Thank you for the compliments and the kind words! Sincerely appreciated! And yes, I actually have one of those old "Egg beater" hand drills. Robert, Thank you so much for this deeply thought provoking comment. I had absolutely no idea that I had been living a heinous lie, in that I thought what I do on this channel could ever be considered Woodworking, until you came into my life and set me straight! I would have never imagined that one comment, from an authority on the subject such as you, could EVER make me rethink how I am living my life! Your opinion has crushed my soul into a million tiny pieces to the point where I am considering selling all of my saws and equipment. In fact, I have suddenly lost the will to live! Sadly, because of how dark my life is now, I now see my future as being nothing but a RU-vid troll and lurking the comment section of videos with subjects that I know nothing about, and will never have the ability to do myself and make useless comments full of animus and distain, just to make myself feel better. On second thought... I think I'll just leave that to you. Thank you for watching! I need the Ad revenue! Next!

In your description you say "flat depth". To what are you referring?
@MandSWoodworks
@MandSWoodworks 3 дня назад
@@PacesIII If you're familiar with Vectric carving tool paths, specifically the Vcarve tool path, you have a start depth, which would normally be the zero plane of the surface that you're cutting on. The flat depth refers to depth of cut you want the pocket to end up being, if whatever vector you're cutting by allows it to. So in short, a flat depth is the max cutting depth you're wanting. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching!

I would be more than willing to make you a set of knights, but please understand that since I am not set up to mass produce these that I would have to buy a whole plank of hardwood just to cut a small blank out of to turn these, not to mention that it takes a couple of hours each piece to make. For the knight, it looked like there was NON-ROTARY cuts involved. Did you use a fixed rotary angle and then do a “normal” cut? Meaning the cut involved X, Y and Z? How did you know the angle to set the rotary at. P.S. Good background music.
@MandSWoodworks
@MandSWoodworks 12 дней назад
The answer to all of your questions is yes. I explain the method I use in the video during the scene where I'm cutting out the knight. I used a normal 3d machining tool path to reach the under cuts that the rotary tool path missed. Regarding the rotary angle... I set the model up in Vectric so that one side was pointing up and that would be zero degrees. When I needed to cut the opposite side on the model, I manually spun to the other side by entering gcode 'A180' in the MDI to spin it 180 degrees. Make sense? I hope this answered your questions. Thank you for watching!

I see in this case you didn't use a tail stock. Why not? Not needed because the chuck of the work piece is strong enough? The work piece is thick enough?
@MandSWoodworks
@MandSWoodworks 24 дня назад
All of the above, except that the length was the factor and not the thickness. The stock wasn't long enough, in this case to warrant a need for the tailstock. The chuck clamping pressure was enough to keep it stable. Thickness did not matter because the stock used for the pawn pieces was only an inch square. Thank you for watching!

No goofy annoying background music and the work goes on with no pauses as you narrate. This is one of the BEST RU-vid videos that I've ever watched - both in terms of the workmanship of the project and the presentation of the video. I'm too late to the CNC game and I will never even attempt anything that complex.... but now that I see what can be done, I am excited to try something somewhat simpler. THANK YOU!!

can the laser cut the 1/8 inch sheet of glass?
@MandSWoodworks
@MandSWoodworks 27 дней назад
It's funny you ask, because I literally tried. It will not cut all the way through, but it will cut deep enough that you can break it, and it be a straight-ish cut. It's not like scoring glass would be where it's a straight and smooth cut. It's actually very jagged and rough. I've learned that the laser doesn't cut or truly engrave the glass, it fractures it in microscopic pieces. So it's not a very efficient way of cutting/scoring the glass. Thank you for watching!
