1:37 “If I know my [water system pressure] is at 66 psi, I should fill up the air chamber to 65 psi” What “water system pressure” is this referring to? I’ve seen videos saying you should measure the pressure using an outside bib. But both ChatGPT and an HVAC person I spoke to say that the pressure you should set the expansion tank to is the cold water pressure of the boiler system, not the water system of the house. This means the tank should be set to anywhere between 12-15 psi, not 50-60+ which is what an outside faucet would be. So I’m confused. Which one is it?
Day after christmas two years ago, I got a call from my wife at work stating that water was leaking down from the ceiling in our bathroom; our 2nd floor bathroom is right above our master bathroom. I called the plumber and he was PO'ed b/c he said that the flange extender on it was all wrong; house was built in 2007 and we bought it in 2019. We had our insurance people come out and take a look and they fixed everything, but the subfloor had rotted out. Most likely, during building, the flange had been cut flush with the subfloor and then when the tile people finished, the plumber came back and installed the toilet but then had to install the extender to make it sit right and eventually that failed. As things were finishing up on the repairs, I thought to myself, "well, if they installed that one wrong, what about the others...?" So I had the plumbers pull all the other toilets (three on the 1st floor) and all three were the same way. Our master toilet's subfloor was completely gone and the toilet was only being up the tile! I had them repair everything and then had the plumber cut the pipe way high. Then when the tile floor was done, I had them cut the pipe to the floor and then install the flange on top of the finished floor, as you're supposed to!
Hello, how is the flap attached to main body? Will it stay in place in a severely overcharged sewer system from torrential rain. I saw a Oatey brand, and it looked like the flap could be lifted easily up and off. Didn't seem like a good design ,if I am actually seeing it correctly. Thanks
Hi Plumber-Tom, thank you for blessing us with your knowledge through these videos. Your videos are truly amazing! I'm a visual learner so the fact that you include pictures with your presentations allows me to understand the information so much better. I am forever grateful!
Well thats wrong, the toilet should be the most downstream fixture on a wet vent, use a 3x2 double wye to connect all three and do it right, the IPC is a joke
Hi Tom, thanks for everything you do for code content. I’m currently studying to become a building inspector, and your videos really help a lot. Do you still plan to do Code Mastery videos? Also, are you going to cover the IFGC?
When determining pipe size on building drain with 48.5 DFUs i see it should be 4”. But if i move past two branch lines that have 9.5 DFUs do i move to a 3”? Also if no slope is given what slop size should i use?
Hello. I do discuss hanger spacing in the videos about the International Plumbing Code Chapter 3. It is in section 308. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--uAF7gEaDOU.htmlsi=FvQVSLa4pNO_xE0b
Inquiry: Water heater closet located and access at exterior wall. I added drain pan for extra precaution, pan drains straight outside. With the pan installed, water heater does not touch back finished wall. I added two 2x4 horizontal bracing to back wall to allow water heater to contact 2x4 bracing, then earthquake strap. Okay with the use of horizontal bracing build up? Probably just make sure horizontal brace have multiple fastening point into the studs it spans across? Have not finished viewing all your videos, but hoping to see water heater insulation install instruction with earthquake strap. Unsure if strapping around insulation is allowed or strap needs to have direct contact with heater and having to cut insulation into 3 sections. Look forward to learning the terminology and plumbing code interpretation you convert into visual format. Thank you!
Thanks for watching. Sounds like you did a good job putting some backing behind the water heaters. I have done that before to create a secure hold. You definitely want those boards anchored into studs in the wall. I don't usually install insulation on a water heater tank. It can help a little bit, but from a conversation with a manufacturer rep, I was told they don't make a huge difference. Either way, I think it is better to insulate first, then strap.
May I ask why in 9:41 the developed length does not start from the bottom level where the vent connects to the drain as the "farthest point"? To me that seems to include the entire length of the vent.
Developed length on venting can vary. They should all start from the drain, but the develop length can end outdoors or at a stack vent or vent stack. So it just depends on the situation.
May I ask why in the diagram showing at 15:36 does not provide vent for some of WC? I can see some WC and UR are using common vent, but some WC do not seem to have their own vents.
Hi. In our box, there is water leaking from a hole in the upper box into the drain pipe. Is that normal? We just noticed today. I'm wondering if that's is why our laundry room smells like mildew . Thanks
Thank you my brother blessed be your life. Nice to know how elegant you improved to talk about the reality. I wanna be a professional now. I will do the best I can to read and understand the book. Codes Sections Reading 📚 I'm ready keep me posted 📫..
Does anyone know when we switch to the 2021 IPC code? I just passed my journeyman test but my brother is testing next April and wants to know what code book to buy.
That will depend on your local jurisdiction - meaning your state. Code is adopted by a state board who approve the code and make any amendments that they want to. Some states do not adopt the code each code cycle (every 3 years). You will want to look into your state laws to see where they are at.
Thank you Mr. tom, u have no idea what a great teacher you are for the young plumbers out there such as myself, thanks to your awesome and informative ipc videos i was able to pass my trademan written exam😊
What does a k mean ? kitchen sink? On an isometric plumbing drawing, I need to understand the letter meaning, lav lavatory for example, WC, (toilet water closet) what else would be? that affects the fixture units, or drain. Thank you
Your videos are clear and helpful. Can you do a video explaining 917 and providing examples of how one can use that code section for residential homes? Seems like most people avoid that section, so it's hard to find explanations and examples of how it can be used.
Hello. 917 is really not designed for residential. It is used in tall buildings, like skyscrapers, with the exact same fixture layout one floor after another. There are so many other better vent options for residential. But if you did use it in residential, it would look like plumbing from the 1950s with a huge stack going up the middle and fixtures branching off.
