Goat Farmer, Mom, and College Instructor
I use the channel to document our adventures; mostly goats, but some family vacations and other fun things that happen. I like having an archive of my own material for my college courses.

What size baby diaper...newborn ....6 month old...etc
@marisaschuebel9189
@marisaschuebel9189 2 месяца назад
I don’t remember the size we bought! Newborns would be too small unless you’re treating a mini. My guess is around size 3 but we did cloth diapers so I’m honestly terrible at knowing sizes! Just grab one from a friend and try it on I guess :)

I did not know it wasn’t CL. I should have had gloves on for sure. Not every abscess means it’s CL but there is a possibility for sure.

Hey this was definitely an emergency for this young goat. It’s a huge abscess right below her ear. I have another recent video of another lancing of an abscess that explains a little more.

Hey sorry I missed this comment. I just called the town office and asked if they were interested in goats to help with landscape management. And they said they had just been talking about goats so it was perfect timing!

Does it work and do you wean them at 6 months?
@marisaschuebel9189
@marisaschuebel9189 Год назад
We try to wean earlier than six months. 3 months would be good but depending on timing and grazing projects we wean when it works. It not 100% for sure but I’m happy if I can decrease stress on a good percentage of them. What a Good percentage is, is up to you to decide.

Useless. Mine figured out how to nurse around them in about two minutes. I'm guessing that calves (and maybe lambs) aren't as smart but they're pointless on goats. I've taken to taping teats as a low-stress weaning method. It's a bit more hassle because some of the determined ones will find ways to get it off (I've resorted to superglue a couple times) and sometimes I have to take it off and replace it in order to relieve pressure from a full udder, but the ones who've been taped off for at least two weeks are much less upset when I separate them.
@marisaschuebel9189
@marisaschuebel9189 Год назад
Hey yes we definitely had quite a few that flipped them up to suckle. Overall our weaning stress was definitely reduced so I would say they definitely had a positive effect. That's a interesting idea about taping them too.
@karilehman9882
@karilehman9882 Год назад
@@marisaschuebel9189 it didn't work on a single one of mine. They nursed around or pulled them out and kept on nursing so it had no effect. That was years ago; I've been trying to come up with a better option ever since and only came up with taping last year. I had a doe with mastitis that I needed to treat and bottle her kids but I wanted to leave them with her so I had to do that to keep them from nursing with the meds in and it worked well enough that I tried it for weaning the rest too.

@powerhigh6003
@powerhigh6003 Год назад
This is not good why you do that
@marisaschuebel9189
@marisaschuebel9189 Год назад
This is to reduce stress during weaning. This way the kids can’t suck on the mom’s but they still have their mother while they are transitioning off the milk. Later we are able to separate them from their mothers and there is much less stress (we see less vocalization at weaning). The kids are old enough to not have milk and leaving them on too long can be hard of the does udders as well as their body condition. I hope that helps to understand.
