Welcome to GARDENING IN COLD SPRING HARBOR, a channel where I Lyuba Franco, a home gardener living in Long Island, NY( gardening zone 7a) tackle all of the struggles, teach you simple tricks/hacks as well as give you all the easy, helpful yet proven tips so you can have the home garden of your dreams!!! I am a stay at home mother to 5 beautiful children (whom you will see periodically in my gardening videos), a loving wife of over 13 years and also a passionate home gardener. It all started with my birth mother who worked at a field/plantation, followed by my grandmother who I was lucky to know until she passed away at 93 years old. As long as I can remember, she used to take me to my parents Summer house in Ukraine and taught me all the gardening techniques and tricks that I still use in my own home garden today.Thank you for visiting my channel and for watching my videos! It is the beginning of August here in R. I. zone 6b. I have a lot of, what seem to be male flowers and very little amount of female flowers. Is it due to heat this summer? Am i just on time with what might a slower growing season? Thank You for any help, very appreciated!
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Are you referring to a mature, established cucumber plant or is it a baby plant? If it's a younger plant it might just be establishing hence it should start producing female flowers for you soon. If its a mature plant, then it might be heat as it is a huge stress factor or try amending the area around the root ball with some bone meal. Bone meal will help strengthen the root system and will boost flower production. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
HEYYYY BESTIE ITS MEEE I love roses so muchhh they’re actually my favorite ones. We’ve got two rose plants in the front yard that usually grew beautiful red and yellow roses tho recently it hasn’t been going to well. Thank you so much for the tricks. I’ll make sure to try it. Like always keep up the amazing workkkkk 🎀💕
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im sorry to hear that your rose shrubs haven't been blooming as they should. Please keep me updated on your progress. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im sorry to hear that your local Lowes Garden Center doesn't have a good clearance section. Hopefully they'll start adding better looking plants vs all dead ones. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
I have 4 Roses they haven't bloomed this year. Is there a way to bring that back. Or I will have to just dig him out . Please help if you can. And not sure, if This is gonna be helpful for you . But I live in Colorado Thanks In advance .
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Most of the time a rose shrub doesn't bloom because of stress. How does the foliage look on those roses? It is dark green and glossy or are you seeing discoloration, fungal disease (black spot), insect bite marks? Are these roses planted in a full sun location? When is the last time you fertilized them? Typically roses put on their first set of flower buds in mid Spring. Have you're roses put on any flower buds at all? Another question I have to ask is what has the weather been like in Colorado? Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Great suggestions, thank you! I've heard about removing early flowers on tomato plants, but never had the heart to do it. Next Summer I will do an experiment with a couple of my pepper plants and see if they do better than the plants of the same variety planted side by side without any early flower removal. I am in upstate, NY, Albany area, so your videos are even more relevant, as we have somewhat similar climate, us being in Zone 6b (used to be 5a a few years ago). I recently discovered Datil peppers, which are unique to St. Augustine FL, and till recently the seeds were closely guarded by the local community (they sell all kind of Datil-based products, and even have an annual Datil Pepper festival). Same heat level as habanero, but much fruitier stronger flavor, and sweet, not bitter. Nowadays one can buy the seeds online, I bought mine from Raymond Powers, who has a short video about Datil peppers on youtube. Thanks again for the great videos! Subscribed.
Hi i just bought a bag from low’s and i know i cant plant them outside because its august but can you please let me know how i can preserve them for next year since they are still in the bag i dont wana lose them 😢thank you
Hello and thank you for watching my video. I actually have a few bags of gladiolus bulbs in my shed that I didn't get to plant earlier in the season. Typically gladiolus is planted from the day of last anticipated frost through July for continuous blooms. To store gladiolus bulbs you'll need to make sure that you keep then in a dry, dark, cool ( not below 40 F), ventilated location. I like to keep an eye on my bulbs throughout the storage period. I always touch/smell the bulbs to make sure that they remain firm to the touch and I don't see nor smell mold/rot. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Hello and thank you for watching my video. They are all great sources of Calcium. Bone Meal is widely available in stores as well as online for gardening purposes. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Hello and thank you for watching my video. I am not sure if Lowe's has any crape myrtle's in stock right now but I'll try to go there in the next day or two and I'll make sure to take a look for you. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Hello my fellow home gardener, I just posted the Lowes video which you have been asking me for. It's from earlier today, so whatever you see in this video it's current. Hope you'll like it! Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
i enjoyedyour content, and yes very helpful. do you have ideas to not get white flies, i live in CA and its been dry and hot. normally i water early then spray with neem max. it seems to keep hydration in the leaves, and keeps the plants immunity up in order to resist white fly colonization. ty again i enjoy your work , and appreciate your time
How frequently should I reapply neem oil after the first application? I can’t keep my plant isolated for more than 3 weeks, so I have to get it completely right the first time. I have armored scales for context
Hello and thank you for watching my video. You’re asking an excellent question, I would re-apply Neem oil thoroughly every 5-7 days. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Cucumbers and tomatoes have similar growing habits and similar requirements so as long as you’re sure that you have enough space you can definitely plant them together. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
@@HolyFamilyHomesteadWV hello and thank you for watching my video. I think that overwintering your pepper plant is an awesome idea! Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Great video . Growing citrus trees in North Wales . One question 🙋♂️. Do you water when the moisture meter shows bellow 4-5 when you insert it in the soil ?
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im very pleased to hear that you have found this video to be helpful and useful. With citrus trees/plants its always better to underwater to overwater. Citrus plants also benefit from infrequent deep watering. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Hello and thank you for watching my video. You're asking a very good question. Yes, you can still eat the harvested peppers. The plant itself is considered severed/dead but the fruits are fine to consume. After you'll get rid of the impacted plant I would not plant another crop in that same location until you'll replace the soil. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Hello my fellow home gardener and thank you for witching my video. Im sincerely pleased to hear that you have found this video to be informative. If you're actually looking to dry and ground paprika peppers into powder, then Kalosca variety is a good one because its a thin walled pepper that can easily be dried and grounded. If you're looking for a spicier pepper variety, Feher Ozone is a good one. This year I have various pepper varieties growing; scotch bonnet, anaheim pepper, serrano, cubanelle, ghost pepper, bell pepper, jalapeno, etc Be well and Happy Gardening!!!

I got a Jalapeno plant this mother's day, simply because I wanted Jalapeno poppers and jalapeno are too expensive. My plant isnt exactly big, and I know it'll certainly die come winter time (Ontario winter), but its produced quite a few small peppers. None as impressive as yours, but they are ripening at their size. Its also been raining too much here, i have never needed to water the plant myself, and its overwatered... If I get like 6 Jalapeno off this plant, it'll have paid for itself.
Hello and thank you for watching my video. Im so happy to hear that your jalapeño plant is performing nicely for you. If you want you plant to produce more, and larger fruit, fertilize it with fertilizer which is high in phosphorus ( more blooms) and potassium ( quantity and size of pepper fruits). No reason to discard of your pepper plant as peppers are perennials and can be overwintered. Where do you grow your jalapeno pepper? Even if you grow it in the ground currently, you can gently dig it up and transplant it into a plastic old container and keep growing it inside during cold months; this way it'll keep producing for you. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
@@lyubafranco I have it growing in a small container now, the plant is only about a foot and a half tall. I could try to keep it alive over the winter, though I'd definitely have to make space for it somewhere, and I'd need some sort of grow light, as in the winter here we can go a long time without direct sunlight.

WOW! What a huge selection of clearance plants! 😍 Which Home Depot is this?? I'm in Queens, and there is no such thing as a clearance section whatsoever 😭
@@lyubafranco Thanks so much. I know where I'll be this weekend! Keep up the videos so I can live vicariously through you when I can't make the drive out to the nicer parts 😊
I took a course at college on plant breeding. Besides what you mentioned, number six can be genetics. If you try to grow seed from hybrids, the dominate trait might be male or female in seeds collected from them. Use heirloom seeds for biodiversity. Otherwise, be dependent on the seed company. It is o.k., too, since the hybrids can give you a great crop.
Hello and thank you for watching my video. I truly appreciate your feedback and sharing this information with us. I also heard that parthenocarpic zucchini varieties won't require cross pollination. These varieties are rare and have to be sow and grown from seed hence purchased in advance from a reputable seed company. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
Ok I did spread bone meal before the final transplant to 5 gallon bucket. But that was like about a month ago. So my question is how long or when to re apply bone meal again?
Hello and thank you for watching my video. If you are gardening in containers or raised garden beds during peak season, you should re apply every 7-10 days. Be well and Happy Gardening!!!
@@lyubafranco so your saying, I have to reapply bone meal every other week or every two weeks? Thought since bone and blood meal are slow releasers. They'll last for a month or maybe two months. Til I side dress again. So which is it?
