I had to laugh when i read that Rex was ‘jealous of Anthony’s superior singing ability’. Honestly, as much as I love Anthony, his voice is not something I ever admired.
About 15 - 20 years ago, there were quite a number RU-vid videos on Aussie soldiers in particular battles presented by John Laffin. I would like to see these videos returned to RU-vid.
This old record was in the jukebox since the old days back up until 1983 or so at La Vera's on Washington Avenue. Them was some lively times, glad to have lived thru them
Bit of a mystery here, I have what are labelled as takes one and five. However, Wiki contends they were only takes one and two? Not easy to locate what was labelled as the number of the master, issued recording. Frankly, the two I have are very very similar to the master but I could maybe send them within an email to you?
That’s a fantastic sounding Gretsch guitar. I’ve got a 1961 model, bigsby and all, faded orange now. Such a clean twangy sound through a Fender De ville with 4 tens or my vox Royal Guardsman or Ac-30
Greatest R&B teor of all time.Saw him in person at the Memphis auditorium in 1959 i the Greatest Show Of Stars with a cast of mostly "Atlantic" recording Artists. Almost got thrown out by the cops. There were 5 of us, mostly Yanks and we were standing up and clapping & singing. I guess at that time in the South with an all whit audience that you were supposed to sit down and shaupp. I bet at the next show at 11 pm which was for Blacks only. Segregation.
I like both versions and Slim Harpo wrote it. I do not like the female background vocals on the McPhatter record - all over the place. So Slim Harpo's version is the better one for me.
I learned a few years ago that Clyde McPhatter was my cousin. His father was a preacher of the church that my father was a member of. You know how families were back then. they never discussed who you were related to. But he surely could sing. He had to leave NC to make it in the music industry.
