we were in dairy up to 2017 and we were getting visits from the EA. we weren't in a NVZ either but there is another set of rules i think they called it SAFFO or something and basically it was rules that farmers outside the NVZ had to comply to and it was things like your not aloud to spread slurry on flooded fields or fields next to a stream or river so basicaly it meant you had to have some storage to cover those times when it was exceptionally wet which we didn't cos we use to push our slurry into a rotor spreader and spread it everyday but we did have straw yards so it was just slurry from the feeding and collecting yard which was one spreader load a day but the EA said we needed to install a slurry store as we were next to a stream aswell or we could get out of dairy farming and do something that didn't involve having slurry and dirty water from parlour washings etc. back then there was no grants available so we decided to give up dairy farming and we now have suckler cows and they live out in the fields more of the time and when they do come in for winter there in straw yards all the time which means we get no slurry. there doesn't seem to be as many rules around spreading solid muck like there is with slurry i suppose solid muck doesn't wash off the fields as easily as slurry does
Good video Will 👍these bloody government agencies all run by university graduates who listen to joe public who know nothing but the agency likes to take action to be seen to be doing something 🙄🤬🤬 thought to get the pit totally empty you might have pushed the slurry back with the scraper tractor 💪👍
Thanks Bob! We did think about get the scrapper tractor but thought it was more hassle that it was worth!😂 honestly thought your 100% correct these government agencies just find a fault and pick on it and they especially don’t like farmers!…they really should go and pick on these big water companies that are dumping raw sewage into rivers and the sea cause I’m sure they’ll be doing alot more damage that we are!
Good video Will 👍 knew about different breed twins but only seen it once before in my life and that was a Friesian bull calf and a Shorthorn heifer calf , and we were always wondering how that happened as cow was only ever with the Shorthorn bull so we thought 🤔😳😂😂
we aim to get all our harvesting done by end of september.........generally the fields are still pretty solid to drive on up to then ........october onwards it's generally a down hill situation most years
We was aiming to mow all this the 2nd half of September just after we reseeded, but the last 2 weeks in September it rained non-stop for at least 14 days😫
Good video Will 👍 you just had to make the best of a bad job 😕 just out of curiosity was the back window on the 390 open when it broke 🤔 when Q cabs first came out that was a lesson that was learned very early on they broke very easily when just suspended on the gas struts 🤬🤬😂 be interesting to see how the 3rd cut bales come out 🤔👍
Thanks once again Bob! I really like your positive responses to my videos!😁 I think it was actually closed when it broke 🤔 it was just the fact that it bounced when the tractor went over the pot hole and it opened and then shut again….and yes I’ll definitely do a video in the near future to see how these bales turn out!🙈😬
They would sag quickly too and be hard get under them. They'll be well received whenever they are used!! Maybe a drier bale mixed along too when feeding?
Yes they definitely would sag! Just look how they have changed from the start of the video when they were being baled and the end when they’ve been stacked a few days. And yes we’ll wait until cows are in full time before we start feeding these and then feed them along side some drier 1st and 2nd cut 👍
We have a big problem round here with crows and seagulls pecking holes in the bales when they’re left in the field, also some where on ground we rent and I’m not sure the landowner would be keen on us leaving bales on his fields, especially when the weather is deteriorating and the land getting wetter
Also the days we were carting them it didn’t rain much, and there was alot of rain forecast to come later that week so we knew we wouldn’t get a better chance to get them off
I feel your pain.. what look liked beautiful second cut ended up getting rained on for 6 days after cut. After they said 4 dry days... Long story short ended up throwing out half the load as it turned inside the barn. Few even started smoldering. Even what i could get dry went moldy... Cheers from Canada. Hope the rest of seasons better!
Sorry to hear of the disaster that has befallen you Will 🙄😕 hopefully something can be salvaged out of this 🤞 the clip of you carting the bales think you need to load the frontof the tractor up with weights and unfortunately twin wheel axles are not good when the going gets tough , good luck 💪👍
Thankyou Bob! Yes I totally agree with you I wish I’d loaded the front up with weights to help the front wheels grip!😬 this trailer is very old and the wheels on it are off a lorry and are doubled up so it really doesn’t do well driving over already wet ground
Good video Will 👍 have you ever had the grass made at this time of year tested for sugars etc 🤔 none of what you cut seemed nit to have seeded out at all 👍
Thanks Bob! We haven’t got round to testing any silage yet this year, but as you’ll see in one of my upcoming videos baling didn’t quite go to plan and the quality of this 3rd cut grass will definitely have suffered a big hit!!😬😬
do you do all round bales. proper good tractors the 300 series masseys.......i got a 390T aswell......the paint on the bonnet of mine isn't as pretty as yours
We try to…although you’ll see hopefully in one of upcoming videos we did have to get some help in do the rest of 3rd cut. Nice one I love our 390t, ive always fancied having another!
Hi Will you do very well with what you have to make a video nice you explain how thinks are there's not a lot you could have done so don't blame yourself this thinks happen in farming keep your chin up and keep the good job you do 😊
Good video Will 👍 interesting to see how other farms deal with their calves 🤔 only difference from when i was involved with dairying is we had calf feeders that automatically measured out the powder and mixed it with warm water automatically 👍 thank you for putting the dates up on videos 👌
Hi Will a good lot of bales from that field and a very good video again it's a nice area where you working keep the video coming 👍 good work 😊 and don't worry about a few ?head on the road there always someone out there
Good video Will👍 shame about the rain being forecast as the land seemed to be drying up nicely there 👍👍 we've had more rain here 🏴 than in the past month but land is very dry underneath 👍
Good video Will 👍 just can't rely on weather forecast s at all these days 🤔😞 seems like quite a good crop hope all falls in place for you getting it baled up 🤞👍
It's certainly been a tough year. Personally, from a lot of experience, I find a mounted mower on a larger tractor with wider tyres would have made a much better job of mowing in wet conditions. Also, the mower would have been tilted back as much as possible to get the fine balance of leaving more stubble to get less soil contamination and less damage to the field, whilst still making sure of getting a clean cut.
