Nathan Evans yeah I did a few times actually it seemed to always be there timing chain was tight too but a diesel mechanic said with how old of a diesel it is that's most likely normal

mine made a similar noise. I found the air filter container has a couple of mounting screws inside and one was broken, causing the knocking sound.
