Investigate, “Larson’s Maneuver.” Putting pressure on the neck below the earlobes in front of the jaw. It’s supposed to stop the attack while you’re having it.

Hello, me too. Mine always happens if I’ve overeaten then gone to bed or laid down too soon. So acid reflux is absolutely a cause but not the only cause.

I'm a doctor and I've been experiencing this for years. Non of the clinicians could diagnose it but I did it myself by searching medical literature. It is because of reflux of gastric acid to trachea causing larygospasm... Do not eat before sleep, no tea, Coffee and alcohol...Use high pillow when sleeping...

I've had this almost every night for a few years now. Forced breathing through it only makes it worse for me. What helps me is to hold my breath and first take a sip of water. Then I can often breathe again. If I have no water nearby, it can also help to just swallow a lot and try to breathe calmly.

I have a problem with this.Same thing.I had reflux for a while, the mucous membrane in my throat and nerve were damaged. Reflux and an allergy to something can cause this condition. If it's reflux, then you have to check the position of the stomach, if it's not the stomach, check the allergy, if you inhale something that can irritate the nasal mucosa and the throat, get rid of it. If the throat is constantly exposed to acid or some vapors, the mucous membrane is already swollen, and the nerve is hypersensitive, and then the muscles of the vocal cords and throat spasm. I suggest practicing breathing through a straw, and in case of suffocation, draw in air not with the mouth open but through the smallest opening made with the lips. The exercise of breathing through a straw influences the muscles of the vocal cords and the neck to strengthen and in case of suffocation they open more easily due to the position of the jaw and different air pressure than when the mouth is open.

Had a chest infection from 3 weeks ago, after coughing so much after a couple of weeks, I think this is what triggered this. This happened for 4 nights. I had to go to A&E. They xrayed chest, BP, heart rate, o2 checked and everything was fine. Saw my GP and same. But this was still happening until I did my own research and when I saw this video this was spot on exactly I have. I am going to make a GP appointment again and show them this video. I hoping I come out of this, I haven't had this for 3 days in my sleep now. Some of things can be done is: take apple cider vinegar before eating and eat a good few hours before sleep to avoid reflux, stay away from fumes, paints, smoke. Keep hydrated. Keep water nearby. Do neck posture exercises and breathing exercises as most mentioned. Don't shout or over use your voice. Keep electrolytes up including magnesium before bed. Use humidifier/diffuser. Wash out nasal shafts with saline solution. And finally maybe gargle with salt water. Gosh this is f'd up and dont wish it on anyone.

Myself and my daughter have recently been suffering episodes of Laryngospasm. It developed after having caught Pertussis/Whooping Cough/100-day-cough that seems to be on the spread at the moment. Its one of the scariest things I have ever known. One thing I would urge other sufferers to try and do during a spasm is the 'Larson's Manoeuvre'. It's worked for me instantly! There is a bit of a knack to getting the right pressure in the right spot but once you get the hang of it it provides instant relief and you can breath straight way. I found out about it on another youtube video. Its a huge relief to know there is a way to control the spasms during an attack.

Laryngospasm is a rare but frightening experience. When it happens, the vocal cords suddenly seize up or close when taking in a breath, blocking the flow of air into the lungs. People with this condition may be awakened from a sound sleep and find themselves momentarily unable to speak or breathe. Though it can be scary while it's happening, laryngospasm typically goes away within a couple of minutes.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eIdWRYOQenQ.html

I am sharing my video with you. Same thing but---DANG, you rode the lightning on this!! I can typically resolve in under a minute even though the crap that gets lower in the throat is impossible to hack up. I started using Listerine Mouthwash. It helps with the bad taste. My biggest fear is pneumonia from this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6HYbHunnLlo.html

Yes! Same thing! Agree with you that I almost always have it resolve in under 30 seconds or a minute at worst. Which is why I initially didn’t panic. It wasn’t abnormal for it to happen. But when it wasn’t resolving I did start to worry. Best of luck to you!

This happens to me about once a year. Thankfully I had it diagnosed early by an ENT as a result of my acid reflux / GERD / LPR, which I can try to prevent by eating healthier. But it still happens, and when an attack happens there is apparently no remedy other than to wait it out. My extensive research tells me that NO ONE has ever died from this (*), so when I get an attack, I try to just remain calm, get over a toile or waste basket (so I can easily spit out when I cough), and tell myself that I'm not going to die. Yet, despite telling my conscious brain that I'm not going to die (and having had dozens of these attacks), after a minute of getting nearly no oxygen in my lungs, part of my mind still can't help but "give up" on life, which is terrifying, and once the attack is over I'm crying horribly. I think I can *slightly* help shorten the attack by: after 20-30 seconds of getting the tiniest bits of air through the vocal cords, I then have enough to barely breath out the tiniest of exhales, which seems to then make the cords not be quite as tight during the very next "in" breath, which then lets in a little more air a little more quickly, so then the next "out" breath will be a little longer and relax the cords more; and repeat. I hope that helps anyone else out there, and good-luck. * - Apparently during anesthesia a patient prone to laryngospasm can have life-threatening complications -- tell your medical staff you have this if you are going under anesthesia. But no one has died during a sleeping attack like this.

Mine are 2+ minutes long. Nasal completely blocked and struggling to get air through mouth is terrifying. My face and neck swell. . . Which scares onlookers as these spasms are random now..grocery store,restaurants,...etc..I’m terrified enough for myself, but when strangers witness this...i feel so awful . The spasms at night completely wear me out. Exhausting .

Thank you for sharing. And appreciate hearing others experiences with suggestions. I am awake now because I had a light episode. It usually happens right when I’m falling asleep. I had one in my life like what I see here. All the other ones I wake up with a tickle in my throat and sit up suddenly in a panic trying to swallow and clear the tickle while my throat has a strange feeling I can’t describe. Just now learning what this could be was never able to describe it.

Hello, I'm Ijaz from Turkey, and I want to share a terrifying experience I recently had with Laryngospasm. I've just become aware of this condition, which seems to be linked to Acid reflux and Vocal Cord Dysfunction. I'm trying to find relief by taking medication, but it's challenging since there aren't many people around who speak English. I'm wondering if there's anything that can help me or if this will be my new normal for the rest of my life. Is there any hope for improvement?

Having these lately in conjunction with a chest infection and a prolonged period of coughing. Just hoping it will go away when the infection subsides. Is it possible that this is not the case, that this can be permanent even though cough goes? I do have a constant tickle and need to clear the throat at the moment.

Thank you for posting this. I had an episode that was very much like this last evening. It seemed to last forever and I was afraid I was suffocating to death. I went to acute care this morning and struggled to get my provider to understand the severity of the attack. She thought I was describing a panic attack ,a night mare or sleep apnea. I knew that wasn’t correct. This video provides clarity and will be helpful for treatment.
