Η αρχική και πραγματική (ετυμολογικώς) σημασία της λέξεως "φιλότιμο" ουδεμία σχέση έχει με αυτό που εμείς οι σύγχρονοι αποδίδουμε σε αυτήν. Από το "φιλέω" και "τιμή", χαρακτηρίζει τον άνθρωπο που επιδιώκει την απόδωση τιμών, όπως εξ άλλου την χρησιμοποιεί και ο Αριστοτέλης, και όχι τον ανιδιοτελή κοπτόμενο για τον συνάνθρωπόν του. Άρα "φιλότιμος" ετυμολογικώς χαρακτηρίζει έναν φιλάρεσκο που επιδιώκει την δόξα (το δοκείν/σκέπτεσθαι) από τους άλλους. Προφανώς, επειδή ο επιζητών τιμές το έπραττε με ανδραγαθίες, σταδιακώς η λέξις υιοθέτησε την σημερινή της εννοιολογία, η οποία ουσιαστικώς κάνει λόγο για τον "ενσυναίσθητο", δοτικόν άνθρωπον. Ως έννοια αποδίδεται και σε άλλες γλώσσες, όπως στην αγγλική ως "empathetically considerate of one's fellow human". Its very sad that φιλότιμο has been lost here in greece especially since at least 10 years ago and beyond, now people have become very egotistical, all they think about is what they will get for themselves when giving something. It is the very sad reality... Now we have something that is called φαίνεσθαι which means people fake how their life looks just to gain trust and to seem friendly.

I am half Greek. Every time I listen to this I feel emotional and proud to be Greek. I think every human being can listen to this and if it grabs at your heart then you have truly understood it's meaning, all of the meanings, the answers, the goodness, the practices, kindnesses, the way of life as we know it should be, and can be. When you listen to the beauty of the words spoken, and what value one's life has with PHILOTIMO.
