I think this tip will help as putts tend to get pulled or pushed when you look too quickly to see if the ball is going to go in. Let me know how you get on ⛳️🏌🏻♂️
Very nice drill, but for those of us who primarily use public courses a bit impractical. I've yet to encounter a practice green that is (1) flat or almost flat for that distance; and (2) would allow one to commandeer that much of the green for any length of time to the exclusion of other golfers.
Thanks for your message. My golf centre is a public centre and we would welcome you to practice this at any time. If your course doesn’t have a practice putting green, then perhaps an option might be to take the last tee time and do a little practice out on the course. The green doesn’t need to be flat either. In fact practicing this on sloping greens is actually more beneficial. You can then practice from all angles and develop better visualisation of how a putt might break. Let me know how you get on ⛳️🏌🏻♂️
Thanks for your message. I’d imagine he retains more positive thoughts than this, although of course we don’t know what is actually in somebody’s head. It’s actually very interesting that many young golfers are using this method and they’ve never experienced very poor putting. When you understand the biology of muscle anatomy, there is evidence that this method may provide a much less tense putting stroke allowing for better putting under pressure
@@chrisjenkinspga1356 your insight is correct, many young players have adopted this putting grip perhaps without ever trying others. However, Colin is a young man and was a pretty good putter, in fact won a major tournament using a previous grip. As we have recently witnessed, Colin still suffers putting woes and I predict he will change his grip again because it isn’t his nerves, it is his mind. Thank you for your replay, I am a Colin fan and still believe he will reach his potential.
Just one thing you might not have explained enough. Club face opened up a lot at address. And good idea to address the club first, and then grip it. And you said weaken the right hand so it doesn’t want to close up the face at release. Good idea!
Thanks for your message. Yes they are similar, although the putter face has more influence over ball start direction than other clubs. The more loft on a club there is then the more influence path has. For example, the putter face is approximately 95% dominant over the path in start direction, a driver 85% and the % drops down through the irons meaning the path increases influencing start direction. We also try to get the ball rolling without back spin when putting, and every other club requires back spin to get the ball airborne. This again requires different impact dynamics. All of this requires fundamentals in set up and strike, so worth thinking about ⛳️🏌🏻♂️
Thanks for the message. The angle of toe hang depends on the length of putter and your posture when standing to the ball. If you tend to stand tall when putting with your eyes inside the ball, then you would require more toe hang. If you like to be more on top of the ball with a shorter putter (like me), then I would go for a more face balanced putter. This is because the stroke will be less arced and a face balanced putter will keep the face a bit more stable. Let me know how you get on ⛳️🏌🏻♂️
I am a decent golfer, the flop shot is my favorite shot around the green and I use it all the time even from very tight lies.My set up is similar to yours but I move less the body than you do and I use more the wrists. An other difference is where I hit the turf.If I want the ball to land only few meters away from me then , in purpose like a bunker shot , I hit the turf four-five centimeters before the ball at a very high speed.Instead if it is a long shot I hit the turf just next to the ball like you did on the video
Thanks for the message. Yes you can certainly play those short ones like a bunker shot (as long as the lie isn’t too tight). When opening the clubface a lot, it’s a good idea to push your hands down lower (between your knees) as this squares the face (if you’ve opened for more loft)and allows for more “flip” through impact ⛳️🏌🏻♂️
Hi, this is a centre shafted “Yes” “Emma” putter. It was made for me by the late Harold Swash, who Phil Kenyon also worked under. He was one of the first real putting coaches, but he is sadly no longer with us.
Hi, I would set your metronome at around 80 bpm. Another great idea is to find a piece of music (or a play list if your are going to practice for a long time) that matches your bpm. For example, I like mine at around 85 bpm which matches a song by The Verve called “Bitter Sweet Symphony”. I find this a great tune to practice to and it really helps me to find my tempo. Works really well with chipping and pitching too 👍! Let me know how you get on ⛳️🏌🏻♂️
@@chrisjenkinspga1356 Love this very specific advice! :-D Puts you in your mid-late thirties too! First "pace" video that actually gave some insight / idea on to control pace vs just a drill. Thank you!
I tool two eighteen inch long 1/2" re bar and duct taped them to my 25 year old Odyseesy putter to add weight and stability through my putting stroke. My hands were spazmatic and I wanted to find a wag to quiet them down, allowing the hands to facilitate the natural back and forth movement of the weight. I ended up adding 3" in length to my putter which allows me to stand more upright, saving my back in the process, enabling me to practice putting for hours at a time without straining my back. Now, with the claw grip, it really has become a much more predictable and confident stroke, where the predominant movement is limited to the shoulders, which is not ideal because those too can stray off line. So now I just have to figure out that last piece of the puzzle is that cracks the code of movement. Maybe it's in rockin the lats? But over all, I think the claw grip is a huge improvement. I tried putting with 1 arm but it's not reliable. I tried right arm, and left arm. I think training with 1 arm is important.
Hi, it certainly wouldn’t harm you to try and swing the golf club at a similar tempo. This would help you to complete your back and through swings and to not rush or snatch in your down swing. Let me know how you get on
The pace of the putt is created with both hands, and from the length and speed of the stroke. Try and maintain the same tempo (between 75 and 85 BPM) for all distance putts though. Check out my pace putting video for more of an explanation ⛳️👍🏻
Hi, thanks for messaging! Use your most lofted Club for this shot. The more loft you have the better, so if you have a 60 degree wedge then you’ll find it easier. Also, a club with a low bounce can also help if your playing off a tight lie with not much grass under the ball. Let me know how you get on ⛳️
Hi Chris. I am so pleased that I stumbled across you today while searching for "how to control putting distance". Your approach seems very sound and rational to me and your method of delivering content is brilliant. Your calm and very professional demeanor is exceptional. I would imagine that you are very well liked as a teaching professional at your golf club. I look forward to seeing more of your content and would like to again thank you and wish you a very happy weekend from Wisconsin USA.
Maybe try and feel your upper arms stay more connected to your body, although Putting is very personal and so won’t work for everybody. How do you feel you putt your best?
Hi Raj, yes it can … although be careful of using a wedge with a lot of bounce. Otherwise you will need to make sure the ball is sitting up a little 👍🏻
Thank you . The 1 2 thing , was the clicking moment for me . I just started the game at 40 . I have played for maybe 5 months tops. I’m have way decent at putting . In the sense my ball is always rolling end over end . But that’s where it stops . I just couldn’t get the speed . After watching part of the video I went right to the speed mat I have . Easy and it works . Thank you again.
What a fantastic explanation of why this grip is beneficial. I’ve been missing putts left for years (right handed player), and I think the tension in my right forearm is why! Used this grip yesterday and didn’t miss from 8 feet and in. With the claw, it feels easier to hit the putt on the chosen starting line.
Thanks Anne. Great video! I've been playing for 35 years and took some time off last few years dew to illness. I'm now 74 but putting is my weakest skill now days eyes don't help in reading greens.
OMG this is a complete lifesaver, I’ve been suffering with the yips for the past few years and it has completely destroyed my confidence on the greens and put more pressure on the rest of my game. I tried the 2finger claw and for the first time in years my hands aren’t twitching all over the place. Thank you for your very clear explanation, count me as a new subscriber.
I became a twitcher too. It's a stroke wrecker. It got so bad I bought re bar and duct taped it to my putter. Now it's as heavy as a barbell. And swings like butter with the claw grip. Re bar at Lowes is only $3.99 a foot.
@@loler2676 yes it’s the “SuperStroke Claw Putter Grip”. It’s made specifically for the Claw Putting Technique. Let me know if you can’t find it anywhere 👍🏻
Ah, so I sort of forward press the driver when I do it my way (lean correctly but start with my hands too far left). I think I'm set up like Bryson but I hit wrong. I'll try this next time!
I’ve been golfing 30 years.. I play the ball off the middle/back!! But I also like the ball flight lower most of the time!! Live in California and those Santa Ana winds can be gnarly at times
Not enough golfers, especially juniors, are taught the importance of a correct grip. Wish I had been taught that when I was about 12 years old. I found that changing from an interlocking grip to an overlapping grip helped as I got older. That is, long after I found out that a baseball grip isn't much use.
Hi, try and feel normal grip pressure in your left hand and much lighter in your right. More of a guiding with the right hand rather than grip. Let me know how you get on 👍🏻
If you stare at the coin long enough, you’ll see a shadow of where your putter and the ball was in your set up. It’s great to get into a habit of seeing the shadow on longer putts too 👍🏻
I tried it and can confirm it works great when you keep your eyes looking at the spot behind the ball after you putt it. My last round I had only 12 putts in the back nine! 👍
