Very good, I have never listened to this lady, I wonder why she isn't more famous. I hear mainly contralto, but I guess she could be a deep mezzosoprano.
She is strangely underrated in conversations about the main mid-century mezzos and contraltos, it is my understanding she left this world at a relatively early age. Although Erda is one of the quintessential Contralto roles there are recordings of her Carmen (which was apparently one of her signature roles, a reasonable thing in consideration of her ideally luscious sound and rather admirable physical beauty) and her Amneris, both roles that are more commonly associated with dramatic sopranos and mezzo sopranos. Her rich tones do suggest a tendency towards the pure contralto but as with many singers of this kind (Barbieri and Besanzoni come to mind) there is a certain level of ambiguity when it comes to her fach. What is unquestionable is the attractive sound of her voice, her ample musical competence and interpretative merit.
I have read that Callas hated doing the "screams" in this scene. The irony, at least to me, is that her screams are both musical and beautiful. She was 27 at the time of this performanc BTW.
James Morris is a wonderful artist with beautiful line in his singing. He is one of my favorite Wotan's. My favorite is George London. Both Morris and London are excellent
Wow! Could we milk that beginning more? Lol My late voice teacher, who was once vocal coach to 17-year-old "Bobbie Peters" (coloratura Roberta Peters), used to tell me that I reminded her of Eileen Farrell, so I had to listen to her recording. I have a recording of the same lied, sung on a Vero Beach Opera Young Artists' Concert from 2008. I had to work with an accompanist I'd just met 30 minutes before the concert, and he either had great difficulty playing the accompaniment (which, to be fair, is essentially an orchestral reduction) or he intentionally schmaltzed it up with a lot of rubato, similar to this recording. 😄 Either way, I really struggled with phrasing because prior to this performance, I hadn't sung "Schmerzen" for about 20 years, when I was in college (I had just turned 45 a week before my recording.) So I had to take all kinds of breaths in inappropriate places, unfortunately. Still, I feel like I did a decent job given the circumstances. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J6aZmgnFzes.htmlsi=5h1rgrNgnpveCMb4
And then, I sat in on a rehearsal with Maestro Serafin. You know, it was Parsifal and I was supposed to see if I do one of the flowers. I didn't. And she sing that music. In Italian of course. And he tell her this and he tell her that and little by little this voice had all the nature in it - the forest and the magic castle and hatred that is love. And little by little she not fat with bad skin and rich-husband-asleep-in-the-corner, she witch who burn you by standing there. Maestro Serafin he say to me afterwards, you know now something about Parsifal. I say, no Maestro. I know much more. I know how to study. And I know that we are more than voices. We are spirit, we are god when we sing, if we mean it. (Renata Scotto on Maria Callas)
La wagneriana más grande entre todas las grandes. Voz bellísima, bien emitida, bien apoyada, con una naturalidad y emoción insuperables. Pena el ruido. La voz suena más clara aquí que años después, pero no menos poderosa; sí más fácil. Insuperable.
The dramatic wagnerian fach into its fullest splendour , with the most absorbing and formidable music in the hands of this two geniousses of singing and conducting it is truly a goodlike musical experience, impecable, sublime and mesmering ,without words
An actress I knew in the 1970s told me that she'd heard Flagstad sing when she was a young woman - she said that she'd never been so transfixed in her life - Flagstad's voice live was like listening to 'molten gold'.
Totally agree. I much prefer it to the (in)famous Culshaw-Solti that everyone calls a classic, simply because they’ve heard other people label it. Yes, Kingsway is reverberant, but not excessively so; Sutherland did all her recordings there, and no one complained about reverberation.
