The advances in science that will help us extend our lives will also make sure we stay healthier and feel better as we age. Think of life extension like taking care of a classic car you love-if you keep it well-maintained, it can run smoothly for years, even with regular use. But if you neglect it, the wear and tear will eventually catch up. The idea is that we could have the choice to live as long as we want, with the option to step away from all the upkeep if we ever feel that the world isn’t quite what we imagined. When it comes to work, life, and environmental concerns, technology is going to change things in big ways. As AI and automation become more advanced, we’ll be able to do more with less effort, which might let many people enjoy the kind of "life of leisure" that was once only possible for the wealthy. And while we worry about energy and pollution now, cleaner technologies like solar and fusion are on the horizon, both on Earth and in space. Overcrowding won’t be as big of an issue either, because space is vast, and we could see communities forming on large space stations or even around other planets. Imagine living in a place where you can look out and see the rings of Saturn up close! A lot of concerns about life extension come from thinking that other technologies won’t keep up. But they most likely will, and adapting to that will mean changing how we see our place in the world. As we live longer, our identity will be tied less to our work or job, and we’ll need to find new ways to feel fulfilled and valuable. The ramifications on our political perspectives can be seen in current political debates, like discussions around social safety nets and "entitlements". Some are going to have a hard time letting go of engrained status ideals. Changes in our personal perspective are not guaranteed, but just like with life extension, there’s a good chance it’s part of where we’re headed.

I should have made this a video reply to you but: I don't feel like it, I'm not sure how I would title it, I haven't done that before my 4 part comment includes a potential solution (below) which I will likely fully explain over the course of 100 videos in 2026 (after I merge the 50+ versions into something coherent and presentable - assuming no health scares or homelessness) LOL 3 parts below so this is part 0 or I suppose I need to re-number everything below haha the third part is likely the strongest and most interesting but won't make much sense without at least the second (and maybe the first) basically I accidentally spent 2 hours typing a reply to this I think it's interesting but I broke it into a few parts as it takes me awhile to get to the point and each section is focused on a different aspect of your video
@thepostgradyear

on downsides to living forever dividing this into 3 parts so this is part 1 I really enjoyed how you got right into this! This is loaded with good questions. I'm really nervous about how nations outside of the Americas are going to deal with these problems. The related current century problems that I think about: The Middle East seems to be heavily reliant on being a central distribution hub of fossil fuels. What happens when they can no longer reliably transport fuel out to exchange for: food, water, manufactured goods, younger workers from countries loaded with young people? If the Red Sea requires massive western naval upgrades to remain viable, I'm not sure how food, fuel, and manufactured goods are going to get to/from/through the middle east. I think this is basically guaranteed to apply massive pressure on Egypt. Which will then apply pressure on all nearby systems. I think this will result in massive refugee (or at least immigrant) populations. Which will probably upset many older of the older citizens who already vote right of center. If the number of people declines, I think people will assume the quality of the people will need to increase. I see few ways the older or younger people will think about this and choose more immigration other than temporary (like University) or low survival (foreign legion). I think this is already happening in Europe. What happens when countries no longer have access to the Japanese model of simply using the foreign country's young workforce to make the things in the foreign country? There are some countries I think might be relatively okay - but they are stacked with resources and potential allies. Like Morocco with their strategic location, alliances, unique Arab/African/European culture, excellent potential renewable energy, and incredible fertilizer reserves. the bit from 7:30 to 8:40 probably deserves an entire comment
@thepostgradyear
@thepostgradyear 12 дней назад
on downsides to living forever dividing this into 3 parts so this is part 2 listed as your third problem: assuming we do drive forward life extension and higher quality of life which is somehow also pushed and implemented all around the world - and massively increase the number of people older than retirement age - do they block advantage and progress for everyone younger than their 40s? I heard a lot about this when I was growing up as I went to a private school which was I think 10% filled with families from China. If the entire society is 4 grandparents, 2 parents, and 1 kid... everything breaks unless people are at least a little healthy and rich. If there is only one kid all the resources go into them and their education. This means they either need the highest level degree to compete with the other people who will also need the highest level degree. I thought this might lead to free college or universal basic income. Turns out those are both fundamentally offensive to a large chunk of the population. Not in every possible way, but each way of implementing them upsets at least one group of people. Make college free now and all the people who went through it still have debt. Forgive all the debt immediately and everyone gets more comfortable with higher prices because it will just be forgiven. Reduce the interest payments and all the little changes and it takes a lot of political focus while generating few loyal supporters. When it comes to universal basic income there are so many basic issues like the lack of ID that we would have to make a brand new system to even get the payments out.
@thepostgradyear
@thepostgradyear 12 дней назад
on downsides to living forever 3 parts so this is part 3 The solution I came up with was linking a form of universal basic income to a shorter higher quality education. This form of education has to be more focused and yet more broad. The people who will likely be allowed by society to try something like this and receive resources for it will likely be the children of the rich, powerful, and well connected who already have options and don't need something like this but will do it if it means they can flex on other people and avoid embarrassment like their kid not getting into a good school. I go over this on my channel in a much sloppier way than I'll likely explain below: 1. Adding a 5th year of high school - which I will refer to as a post grad year 2. These are attachments for existing schools rather than new schools on their own. 3. Each attachment starts as a single student but scales up by +1,2,3,etc. student per year until stabilizing at 100 in each of the 100 affected schools - thus 10,000 students. 4. This group of 10k students is considered a level. Each level focuses on a specific task we use education for. The first level is focused on sending kids to college. We simply add more levels over time. Each level is given money per student equal to a high school senior + an additional amount. The additional amount is static and not affected by inflation. This means higher levels will need to be made and are more desirable as each higher level gets an additional $10k per student. 5. Distribution of each quarter of the additional funds: directly to the student, student council, shares of a wealth fund, advocates. 6. Advocates: new position halfway between teacher and grandparent. 7. Age distribution: as we deprioritize older levels they are made available to 2 grades of 50 and can be further split. 8. The common link between all of these things is a student created and inherited commonplace book which can be used AT ALL TIMES.

I have also thought about this a lot now at 76. What if not everyone you know your love ones as you mentioned your family your friends feel the same way you do. They do not want to keep living. Then you may be alone. So maybe it depends on your personality. The people who are more outgoing and can make new friends over the years could adapt to living forever or a long time where as the introverted quiet types who do not want to try new things or meet new people will find it more difficult.

Very interesting idea, "AI as a metaphorical ghost." Lots of cool ways to think about it in that way. There is a lot of psychology to unpack here from the many different items you bring up. Wanting some sort of connection, even when it is digital (like a ghost) is an interesting way to view it and is something that will continue to develop. A main issue that this brings up, that is important for all instructors to understand, is how this will affect students. Overreliance and now emotional reliance will become a larger issue as AI becomes more lifelike and as AI robots become more available to everyone. I talk a bit about this in my video "The Power of AI Voice: What All Faculty Must Know" (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S8AywzTUVX8.html). This is an important topic in that it is so new and developing. We have to realize that students (and all of us) need to be taught what is an appropriate relationship with AI (or digital ghosts as you put it) in order to avoid overreliance/emotional reliance and to instead use it as an impowering tool. Thank you for another great video Bryan.
@BryanAlexander
@BryanAlexander 14 дней назад
The psychological aspects are key. This metaphor lets us think of anxiety about AI in a different way, as well as our attraction to it. It also gives us a new way of thinking about digital disembodiment. Wrt academia, I think this might explain some backlash and avoidance. Copyright was created to incentivise innovation so there is a genuine tension between the ideas of using copyright to stifle AI and just letting the AI developers take anything they can access to train their machines. The problem with giving the developers the right to use anyone's intellectual property as training data is where does it stop? It began with Artists but no one really cares about them- then it moved on to writers and a few more people maybe cared about them- now the music industry is getting involved in lawsuits and people do care about them because they have the money to finance serious legal firepower. But how far does this go? As an AI developer can I reverse engineer a drug and then feed that data into my AI, perhaps allowing me to create competing compounds that difffer just enough to evade patent? What future will there be in any kind of IP once the legal principle is established that anything created is fair game for the AI developers to leverage for their own competing efforts? We seem to be in cultural doublebind here- if we don't let the AI develolpers have unfettered access to everyone's IP we risk suppressing a genuinely potent and perhaps revolutionary technology- but if we do abandon the idea of Intellectual property entirely we risk unravelling an incentive structure that has been party instumental in creating the technology upon which we all depend.

@MichealPeggins
@MichealPeggins Месяц назад
I appreciate your point of view but I don't believe these will happen. Hear me out: Investing - Yes, companies are spending billions of dollars and they aren't making a return on their investment. For example, OpenAI is reported to be $5 billion in the hole this year. However, the companies that are investing in AI are worth trillions! I don't think they mind spending more to stay ahead or race to the finish line of AGI. Cultural - There have been delayed cultural adoptions of every technology. Remember when people didn't want to use the internet because of Y2K? That wasn't too long ago, now everything is online. Once people learn more about AI and how to use it properly, they will embrace it more Larger threats - there are definitely huge threats that AI imposes (have you seen OpenAI's voice feature scare?) but I believe the government will push the limits so we can stay ahead and beat China to the top. This can be a dangerous technology, but it is also a modern arms race. The government won't stop until we are #1. Hope you don't mind me playing devil's advocate. Just wanted to offer another perspective!
@BryanAlexander
@BryanAlexander Месяц назад
Michael, thank you very much for this excellent riposte. Very much appreciated. To be clear, I'm putting these possibilities out there as possibilities. I haven't proposed likelihood of each, but want us to bear them in mind. To your points: Investing - true about trillions vs billions, but each of these companies is leery of losing money. Right now AI is a loss. They're hoping the investment will pay off, a la Amazon eventually turning a profit. But each is also quite capable of pulling the plug on something it finds a loser. Cultural - a year ago, I wouldn't have said this. But watching the anti-Silicon Valley animus grow is instructive. There's a lot of resentment out there, and it's now bipartisan. Remember the happy collaboration between the Obama administration and Google, or how delighted folks were with the first wave of social media? Now the mood is more sour, and I think there's an opening here. Regulators are attuned to this attitude, for one. There are also a lot of creatives who oppose generative AI, and they can win attention - think of the Scarlett Johansen voice story, for example, or the role AI played in the last Hollywood strike. This could really build up to, say, anti-GMO or anti-nuclear levels. Wait for some spectacular stories of AI damage. Governments - they're playing a delicate game, generally trying to appease fears while also supporting what they hope is a powerful industry. The US is, as you say, racing China, and China hasn't slowed down its AI crash course. (In academia, I'm expecting more pressure on Chinese students) Hope this helps, or at least gives me notes for the next one. :) Please keep going!

For those of us needing to live in a strong market-driven economy and who can't rely on the government for our wages and funding, I hope that Trump wins. Not that I trust Trump, or the Republicans to allow for an unrestricted and prosperous economy for the good of all, but the other options seem possibly disastrous for the economy, the most fundamental issue of any society.

Thank you for commenting, RedLeader. The economy seems crucial to Trump's case, as well as Niden's. Do you think Trump would lead a libertarian political economy?

The economy has improved greatly under Biden, and will continue to do so in the next four years, not because of what anyone will do in the next term, but because of what was done THIS term, by competent, capable people.

The only way anyone needs to prepare for a second Trump administration is to save money to invest when the economy is finally put back on track . Prepare to pay less in taxes and stop letting these evil establishment politicians on both sides launder money through Ukraine while we the taxpayers suffer. Trump is the best hope for the United States to succeed and hopefully after there will be a younger more well spoken version of him that isn't an establishment politician that can further an American first agenda that ensures we are in a position to effectively help the rest of the world.

It really isn’t as dire as you think you live in a bubble like I do… ### Case for Support: Voting for Joe Biden in 2024 Using Allan Lichtman's 13 Keys to the White House #### 1. Mandate Key **Current Status**: Democrats lost the House majority in the 2022 midterms but maintained the Senate. **Analysis**: The mixed results reflect a complex voter sentiment, not a clear rejection of Biden’s administration. **Trump**: Trump's anticipated "red wave" did not materialize, showing his influence is waning. **Percentage**: **Biden 50%** #### 2. Contest Key **Current Status**: Biden is expected to secure the Democratic nomination without significant opposition, though recent debate performances raise concerns. **Analysis**: Despite internal debates, no serious challenger has emerged. **Trump**: Trump faces opposition within his party but maintains a strong base. **Percentage**: **Biden 80%** #### 3. Incumbency Key **Current Status**: Biden is running for re-election, utilizing the advantages of incumbency. **Analysis**: Incumbency typically provides significant advantages. **Trump**: As a former president, Trump doesn't have the same incumbency benefits. **Percentage**: **Biden 80%** #### 4. Third Party Key **Current Status**: RFK Jr. is running as an independent. **Analysis**: RFK Jr.'s campaign might pull more votes from Trump due to his conservative stances. **Trump**: More likely to be affected by RFK Jr.’s campaign. **Percentage**: **Biden 60%** #### 5. Short-term Economy Key **Current Status**: The economy is growing, but public perception is mixed. **Analysis**: Despite positive GDP growth, public dissatisfaction affects this key. **Trump**: Fox News influences public perception, often painting a negative economic picture. **Percentage**: **Biden 70%** #### 6. Long-term Economy Key **Current Status**: Economic growth under Biden has been stable but moderate. **Analysis**: Compared to previous terms, the growth is sustainable. **Trump**: Trump’s economic policies led to short-term boosts but long-term instability. **Percentage**: **Biden 70%** #### 7. Policy Change Key **Current Status**: Biden’s administration has enacted significant policy changes like the American Rescue Plan. **Analysis**: Major policy initiatives demonstrate proactive governance. **Trump**: Many of Trump’s policies were rolled back or faced legal challenges. **Percentage**: **Biden 100%** #### 8. Social Unrest Key **Current Status**: While there have been protests, there hasn't been sustained nationwide unrest. **Analysis**: Biden's administration has maintained relative stability. **Trump**: Trump's term saw significant social unrest, particularly in 2020. **Percentage**: **Biden 80%** #### 9. Scandal Key **Current Status**: Biden’s term has been relatively scandal-free. **Analysis**: Recent concerns have been minor compared to Trump’s numerous scandals. **Trump**: Multiple ongoing legal issues, including criminal charges and significant scandals. **Percentage**: **Biden 90%** #### 10. Foreign/Military Success Key **Current Status**: Biden has restored relationships with key allies and managed international challenges. **Analysis**: Significant successes in foreign policy and military affairs. **Trump**: Trump's foreign policy often alienated allies and destabilized international relations. **Percentage**: **Biden 80%** #### 11. Incumbent Charisma Key **Current Status**: Biden’s empathetic demeanor resonates with many voters, though his recent performance issues raise questions. **Analysis**: Biden's empathy contrasts with Trump’s divisive personality. **Trump**: Trump's charisma appeals strongly to his base but alienates moderates. **Percentage**: **Biden 60%** #### 12. Challenger Charisma Key **Current Status**: Trump’s polarizing personality significantly impacts voter sentiment. **Analysis**: Trump's charisma is divisive, alienating many voters. **Biden**: Biden’s more moderate and empathetic approach appeals to a broader base. **Percentage**: **Biden 70%** #### 13. Party in Power Key **Current Status**: The Democratic Party has maintained loyalty, despite some internal divisions. **Analysis**: Overall, the party remains unified. **Trump**: The Republican Party faces significant internal strife and division. **Percentage**: **Biden 80%** ### Summary - **Biden**: Strong leadership and stable governance. - **Trump**: Legal issues, divisive personality, and destabilizing policies. ### Conclusion Voting for Joe Biden in 2024 means choosing stability, experienced leadership, and progressive policies. His administration’s achievements and ongoing commitments make him the best choice to lead the United States forward, safeguarding democracy and ensuring continued progress for all Americans. ### Final Percentage Assignments for Biden 1. **Mandate Key**: 50% 2. **Contest Key**: 80% 3. **Incumbency Key**: 80% 4. **Third Party Key**: 60% 5. **Short-term Economy Key**: 70% 6. **Long-term Economy Key**: 70% 7. **Policy Change Key**: 100% 8. **Social Unrest Key**: 80% 9. **Scandal Key**: 90% 10. **Foreign/Military Success Key**: 80% 11. **Incumbent Charisma Key**: 60% 12. **Challenger Charisma Key**: 70% 13. **Party in Power Key**: 80% These keys, assessed together, strongly favor Biden over Trump, making the case for Biden as the rational choice for 2024.

Thank you for sharing this. When was it made? I like the keys, but differ in how some of them play out: 2 - nobody has stepped forward to challenge Biden personally, but around 10 Dem politicians have come out for Biden to step down, as have some major donors. 10 - While I agree with your assessment of the situation, I think things look worse than that. Ukraine is clearly losing. Israel looks terrible and the Dem base is now splintered about it. 11-12 - Trump has a terrific tv personality and is very good on the stump. Biden, in contrast, has lost his ability to communicate very badly.

We would have to have the lowest voter turnout in like ever inorder for trump to win. Republicans have never won a Presidential Election without 2/3rds of independents. Right now he has less than half so. Something big would have to happen.
@BryanAlexander
@BryanAlexander 2 месяца назад
Turnout might be that low. Polls show the majority of Americans are tired of the election, and give both candidates net negative marks. On the other hand, perhaps we'll see a last-minute dash to the polls to stop the right, as we just saw in France.

@BryanAlexander ive always thought that people are more motivated to vote against a candidate they hate compared to a candidate they like. Lots of people hate these candidates. They'll get out and vote for the other to make sure the one they hate looses. I think thats why trump won the first time.
@BryanAlexander
@BryanAlexander 2 месяца назад
@@cullenfarran3750 I've lost track of the political science about this, but I've heard the theory that voting against someone doesn't yield as many people as voting for someone. If both are widely hated, like now... their hard core supporters will turn out.

While ChatGPT4 does a very good job of analyzing the writing of a CEFR B1-B2 ESL student and giving constructive feedback, it does an terrible job of analyzing speech. Is there an AI platform that might work better with spoken language?

I just now asked ChatGPT to give me a random number between 0 and 100, and it wasn't giving me 42. Only when I told it to give me a number related to a hitchiker did it give me 42.

In my junior yr of high school, I enrolled in a half-day Cooperative Health Careers program which allowed me to take classes in the nursing field at the high school AND work at a local paired hospital as what was then called a Nurse's Aide (not volunteer or 'candy striper') at a decent wage for the time as a teenager. When I graduated high school in 1970, I continued working at the hospital for another 2 yrs and then moved to another local hospital for another 3 yr. In total, I'd worked 7 yrs as a Nurse's Aide. I would have continued my health career and become an LVN, then RN, but I had an undiagnosed Math disability. I eventually found out that I have a 30pt deficit in Math related functioning. This meant, at the time, it would have been dangerous because I couldn't properly administer drugs to patients. I left the health industry when I married and had a child. I believe the ISD closed the CHC program in about 1973 for a multitude of reasons including budgets and the leading RN behind the program passed away. I enjoyed the program a lot and really wished I could have gotten further but it is what it is. :)

34:00 "New training" paradox internships are going away ... Anyone else catch this? "we're already seeing those people are being let go and AI is being used to replace them" Same problem was discussed ten years before AI by Randall Collins (2013:37-69) in "Does Capitalism Have A Future?" at digamo.free.fr/waller15.pdf That was ten-years before AI, but Jose updates Collins. "We're already seeing those people are being let go and AI is being used to replace them .. on the corporate side, if you are just saving money that makes sense. [But in terms of society-at-large, what this neoliberal mentality means is] So, how do we train students to be senior lawyers is they cannot be junior lawyers and interns first? ... That's the paradox we're headed toward at light speed." This is the problem of generations writ large -- for all of society.
