Hi, welcome to the Japan Objects channel!

Did you know that the kimono industry is under threat? In fact, since its peak in 1975, it has shrunk by 90%. Kimono designers and makers tell us that reaching new audiences is vital for the survival of the kimono; and that includes not just Japanese young people, but also enthusiasts from around the world.

This is why we want to do our part to preserve Japanese kimono by doing away with any unnecessary barriers, so that everyone can enjoy kimono! We want to share with you dressing tips and styling advice through this channel. You’ll discover that enjoying kimono fashion really can be both easy and fun!

I bought a thing Zabuton mat made by Beams Japan. I like how it smells like the grass material of a tatami mat. Other than that, it’s not as comfortable as a pouf.

Is there a way to wear a kimono without the obi? At least without the ribbon in the back? I’m disabled and I doubt I’ll even be able to stand long enough to tie the kimono but I definitely won’t be able to tie the ribbon in the back

Hello, Thank you for your informative video. I bought a used kimono and, as it was secondhand, I gently washed it. Now I know that was a mistake because it released the chemical mothball smell that is toxic to humans. After drying in the sun is the chemical in the fabric still present? Is the fabric too toxic to wear? Thank you so much for your help.

TYSM!!! どうもありがとうございます between learning how to iron 2 on a floor-based half ironing board and then learning how to fold them, I now know why older women are so hunched over 😅😭🤣. Had to roll my back out, spine curve, cat/cow. WOOOO. Now, the process of putting them on my friend and I tomorrow to go to Shofuso in Philly.

HELP!!!! I bought a kimono clearly post war from what you say on your videos. Only paid $50 in antique shop for it. Knew was dirty so I carefully washed it multiple times and decided to separate seams and put back together in appropriate size. Do you have a tutorial for putting the pieces back together or is there a pattern for the longer sleeved one that you can share. This kimono is so beautiful even with remaining stains. Needs to be put right. I am an excellent seamstress and have made many clothes from pattern.

A yukata is just a summer kimono. The literal translation of "kimono" is "thing to wear"!

I bought my first vintage kimono last year! It turns out it is a furisode (and I’m now 27 😅), but I didn’t know about the traditional age requirements at the time. It’s beautiful and I love it! It’s blue with red and white and gold, and I have a gold and orange obi and a red, pink, white and gold obijime. I even got a proper hair accessory to wear with it!

I love watching 1960's samurai films. Always wondered what was going on with the ladies dress belts. Looked like they had a water bottle, or a pack of sandwiches stuffed in there. But now I know, thank you. However, the diameter of the dress doesn't look functional? And what about going to the loo, it's going to take half an hour? Well that said, next is hats as people always seem to be walking around with some ridiculously over the top lampshades as hats. Apparently, they had something to do with their status. Anyway, you wouldn't laugh at these hats unless of course your name was Zatoichi!!! Update, yep just as I thought. had a look at the Japanese straw hats and many look absolutely stupid and probably on purpose to start a fight. Check it out, monks literally walking around with waste paper bins on their head. Still when in Rome! If everyone is walking around with a stupid hat on, you're going to look really odd if you don't have one. Anyway Japan is such a cool and rich place. Thank you for the informative video.

Tip 1: you could ware decritve wrist/arm warmers or decorative gloves for the yukata too! (Especially for those of us who are bigger size then yukata!) Tip 2 you could tie your sleeves back too if they are too long

Thank you for the explanation. I always wondered why Japanese people sit in a kneeling position, which looks uncomfortable as hell. So if I understood correctly, it's all about tradition. After all, a basic chair and table wouldn't take more space. Choosing tradition over physical comfort is stupidity in my book. You mention that it's inappropriate for woman to sit with her legs crossed, but it's OK for man. That sounds like another good reason to dislike this particular aspect of Japanese culture. At least, for me.

I think Furisode is not just for unmarried woman... also only for younger woman, like early 20s at most. Or at least, that's what I was told in Japan when I wanted to wear one haha. I'm 30 already so... sigh.

I bought one from a shop at an anime convention last year (well, it was a birthday gift). I was 26 and didn’t know the age requirements at the time……. It’s gorgeous and I can’t not wear it, though. Besides it being a birthday gift, it was also a much needed pick-me-up. I had just gone through a breakup literally the day before, and it was a reminder that I’m worth it
