Nice interview! I think Mike was just talking about creating a tune inspired by turning a phrase from Bach’s Toccata upside down, rather than literally inverting the original tune. En esa época conocí a bastante gente relacionada con Mike Oldfield, entre ellos a los compañeros con los que fui hace 5 años a "tierra santa" y que aparecen en el video. This is the third video I have found of Mike playing a piece f music that came from the place where he was playing. The first was the Blue Danube when he was in Vienna and the second was the Blayden Races when he was in Newcastle England. It not only shows his great virtuosity as a guitarist but also how thoughtful he was to play something that was not his composition but still meant something to his audience. ❤😊

I wish he hadn't joked about this and said it was "upside down". Now loads of people seem to think that's literally true, when it isn't. It has similarities, that's all.

Estoy seguro de que hay más melodías y partes del derecho y del revés en este disco, y en algún otro de Oldfield también. Lo realmente increíble es que esa melodía suene igual de preciosa y emocionante de una forma que de otra.
Cualquiera que escuchara originalmente Incantations en cinta de cassette, sabe que este primer pasaje de la parte 2 en realidad era una de las melodías principales de la parte 1 en reversa, ya que esa cara A de la cinta era más corta y se llegaba a escuchar en el margen silencioso que quedaba la melodía del revés del principio de la cara B. En Hergest Ridge ocurría algo parecido al final de la cara B. Son esas cosas fascinantes de genio que siempre ha tenido Oldfield.
Clever. But I feel a little bit betrayed actually.... Pretending it was an Original Tune when it's someone else's only played in reverse. That's deceptive at the very least.
Goes to show how influential classical music has been to new generations of music. Take for example, the Star Wars theme had elements of Holst’s Mars and Korngold’s King’s Row theme. (Learned from watching TwoSetViolin) IMO, if you’re able to create something different from an original tune, that counts as original.
It's not unoriginal or deceptive. He told you what it is. Music doesn't exist without foundations or other people doing the notes before them. You listen to music and it enables you to build on that foundation and create your own.
He was joking. It's not literally Bach upside down, it's just slightly similar, i.e. inspired by it. I know - I play the toccata and fugue in D minor on my piano regularly, and I've checked the music.
