I was with 2 Cav Regt - in 1992 when we were the FIRST unit to move to Palmerston. The barracks/Base was unreal. Great facilities, and awesome lines - 3-4 people in a barracks "unit" - had a good SAL and also a common area with lounge and also kitchenette with microwave and sink etc. ( but we pretty much either ate at mess or in Darwin city). The Mess for OR's was really good - salad bar and ice cream bar, and the food was generally excellent, except for those effing terrible chicken volevants. We had squash courts, basketball, swimming pool, gym etc. Plus the "boozer" was excellent. Back then in 1993 - the beer was 90c, and spirits were $1.10. We had a "duty bus" that took us all into Darwin, so we could get hammered on base, then go to all the bars like Beachcombers, the Green Room and other places, mostly hooking up with locals or tourists. I even remember when McDonald's came to Darwin in Casuarina Mall. We actually used to go hang out there on weekends because the mall was air-conditioned..... The lines were excellent - we even learned to "hack" our personal room AC ( as to use AC had to use our room key) - but being smart diggers we figured out how to bypass it, so we could have AC running all the time. Back then life in the unit was excellent. We had great OC's ( Salmon and Krause), and although the first CO - Dennis Bourke - he was a dickhead, was really loathed by everyone and quit us to go become a politician in Darwin ( think he failed).... but back then, the only crap part of being based there was being on Ex all the time - and the weather and conditions are "soul destroying". It was so hot and humid, and out on ex the mozzies and flies are crazy. It was a massive change from living in Western Sydney out at Jordan Lines in Sydney...... I remember the SASR playing "enemy" for K-92, and the longest we spent "out bush" was 6 week in the NT/WA/Kimberly's..... Man that was the worst. no showers, dusty AF, our DPCU's became just crusty salt encrusted brown cardboard uniforms...and we ate rats and "jackies" the entire time...But 30 years later , I look back at it as really fun, yet crazy AF....
"we were a bit of a latte set in Newcastle, we would go out for dinner four or five nights a week, socialise with our friends, lots of wine in the Hunter.... and we thought it was good to get a break away from that" Jesus, on what planet does leaving that for the desert seem appealing?
Darwin has changed a lot in the last 20 years. One amazing beautiful place that served me well for 15 years. You can reinvent yourself untill you find what's right fot yourself. Expensive housing has kicked in but some good money to be found if you want it
Well in July 2022 the Rental market has increased 30 percent. $570 a week we were paying now in one hit its gone up to $700 pw. Forget Darwin it's totally unaffordable now
