@@raneyjr …. will take me the rest of my life to absorb this material! Your dad and brother were innovative Jazz Guitar luminaries who did not get the full credit they deserved IMO. Their liquid tone, virtuoso speed (while never sacrificing musicality) and ability to hang with the masters of Jazz remains a landmark in music history.

I'm glad that you're doing all these demos... longer videos to come? I hope that more jazz musicians discover your book, because you are one of the few educators to place rhythm in the forefront instead of an afterthought (or even ignored). These odd groupings, poly meter, poly rhythms, and line contours provide us students with more depth and insight compared to the usual scale lexicons usually provided. There's only a few jazz educators who really understand fundamental and organizing nature of all music: rhythm. Jon, I hope this book is taught in jazz schools and conservatories across the world!

When they "discover" him for the first time the reaction is always the same: "How can I have never heard his playing before!" Fantastic that the book is finished. I'm curious. Jimmy Raney is one of my favorites because of his beautiful melodic lines. I've been waiting a month for my physical copy of your book to arrive from Sher Music. Regardless, I am excited to dive into those pages. Rhythm is the key to playing jazz convincingly, and you were the first person I found on the internet who spoke about poly rhythm and poly meter simultaneously. Hopefully your book moves the needle in changing the jazz education paradigm--we need to recenter rhythm in our jazz studies, no matter what instrument we play :)

Einstein said his ideas came when he wasn't trying to get ideas to come. The ideas came by themselves in a kind of a dream state - half awake, half asleep. Great improvising comes by itself, it's like all the ideas are being whispered in your ear and you just play what it tells you. Sounds weird, and almost disingenuous to say, but there's really no other explanation for how and why it happens. But when it happens, you know.

I have my all time favorites sir, and your father is among them👍. Though he had his own sound and style, I always likened him to TAL FARLOW. And TAL to your father. I heard that they roomed together and came up together back in the early days. What a time that must have been! I have never seen this footage of Jimmy in Nashville, he really cooks! Very be-bop orientated. He just glided over the neck with beautiful interlocking lines, and burning👍. Your father was one of the best on the instrument! I will list the Company of which I include Jimmy, who are my Favorites: TAL FARLOW, BARNEY KESSELL, JOE PASS, JOHNNY SMITH, KENNY BURRELL, ED BICKERT, RENE' THOMAS, LENNY BREAU. I have also likened Jimmy to Rene' Thomas, and visa-versa. I thank your father for his craft and many hours of enjoyment for me👍. Thanks for posting his things! Joe.

When I had finished music school, I went to my first jam session run by a wonderful trumpet player in Baldwin- Mel. Davis. I was real nervous. I was invited up and called the tune “Four”. I had my arrangement down. After Mel told me “ you play guitar pretty well, but you now need to learn how to - play music”. Best advice I ever got. Jim and Doug- beautiful melodies on their guitars. ❤❤

I'm 70yrs old a grew up learning the old tradition of singing the solos/ lines of Lenny Tristano, Charlie Parker etc. Chuck Wayne once asked me during my lesson "Why don't you play something I never heard before". I replied How do I do That? You probably heard everthing already" He said "Why don"t you play something YOU NEVER HEARD BEFORE". Then he said Yes learn tunes, solos and lines.
