Thank you for sharing very informative, I always wondered about what if a whole guitar was torrefied if let’s say I want to simulate really aged vintage one then it’s not only the top that aged? Just curious here 😅 i understand now that bending wood might be more difficult after the process so I think its practicality matter after all, imagine J45 style guitar but the whole guitar was torrefied vs origin vintage good survivor example

There is no way an easy out or screw extractor is going to remove a tint screw like that!I have made a simple hole saw from a small piece of thin wall brass tubing and cut around them then had to plug the hole and redrill.

Suggestion: Measure the diameter of the jack carefully! Many jacks are 12 mm or 15/32nd in diameter - and you want a snug fit! A too large hole will distort the thin jack washers.

I’ll be honest I’m not a fan of barrel nuts. I’ve seen them crack the neck and nearly pull out. I prefer a threaded nut sert that screws into the neck.
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 22 дня назад
Both are viable methods. Funny that the reason I went to the barrel nut approach is for exactly the same reasons you mentioned about the inserts. haha

Hi Robbie, always good. I finish buff more or less always by hand, as per your French polish video tutorial (which is excellent, folks, BTW). Hand buffing works just as well with waterbased lacquers as with FP, although a little more time and effort is required.

I’m building my first guitar and having trouble setting the tenon to the mortise. Is the neck block angled just where the sides meet the body or is the tenon also angled as a whole to the body? Thanks
@OBrienGuitars
@OBrienGuitars 23 дня назад
The end of the tenon I cut an angle before putting it into the jig. It doesn't really matter what that angle is because the tenon doesn't bottom out in the mortise cavity. The sides or cheeks where the neck meets the body must have the correct angle.

I wanted to buy the plans for the Robert O'brien Mortise and Tenon Jig. I cannot find these anywhere. Is the neck angle jig actually the mortise and tenon jig? Does the neck angle jig hold the templates for routing the mortise and tenons?

If there is any tool you don’t need to buy it’s this. Home Depot sells 2’x2’ high grade plywood. You can get the hardware from StewMac but I opted to use 30” black iron plumping pipe with 1/2” threaded rod, t nuts, washers and nuts. A new one from StewMac is $750. Mine cost a little over a $150.

Hay Robbi, great job as usual my friend. This guitar sounds wonderful , I was able to buy a German parlor on eBay, the back is off and the neck is off, but the top isn’t great condition. Nice on piece of fur or spruce. There is no bracing on the top and I would like to put an brace in it I see this guitar you worked on here. I wonder if you could give me any information about how big the brace would need to be ? any guesses?

It would be hard for me to advise without having the guitar in hand. I would just choose a bracing pattern and build lightly.

@BobStCyr

These instruments are both great sounding instruments. They confirm my preference for the single top. The double tops that I've heard and played (and made) have a balance that leans toward the treble end and the midrange takes on a slightly "honky" sound - sort of like what happens if you talk and them cup your hands around your mouth. You get more projection but the tone changes - not for the better IMHO. The single top is more balanced, and has a fuller sound. Occasionally though on some pieces that have 3 or 4 voices the inner voices are more distinct on the double top.
