I'm a runner who has discovered the fun hobby of videography while running half marathons through the year 2019. I have retired from running half marathons and now video my dogs as well as other interesting subjects that capture my interest.
The following link should provide insight on Megs Mile. In addition a search for "Meg Menzies Hanover County Virginia" provides insight on Megs Mile. The sneaker tower seen in the video serves as memorial to Meg Menzies. www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/va-runner-killed-by-drunk-driver-while-training-for-boston-marathon/
You're Welcome! I hope you did well. I believe the course has changed since 2012 and there is a u-turn once you go over the bridge rather than going to the other end where the large parking lot is. Keep running strong!
@@monicam2539 yes that's correct we u turn in the middle of the bridge after going downhill from the steep climb. It was a fun course and well ran event overall. Enthusiastic volunteers at the aid stations and finish line activities. I'd do it again. Maybe not next year but another year. I flew down the steep climb twice. That really helped me reach my time goal.
@@markanthony5582 Running Alliance Sport & Race Director Robby does a phenomenal job at organizing these runs. Be sure to check out the other runs he organizes - hopefully you've done the others too!
I've done this 4 times. Wifey & I would drive up from Long Island & make a long weekend out of it. We're avid photographers so the covered bridges are a treat. Memories: The morning start at Suicide 6 with 'only' about 2,000 entrants, the coolness of mile 7 as we ran by the river, the semi-downhill of the last 1/2 mile or so before hanging a right into the huge field for the finish... and... queuing up for beer! Epic!
I agree, the city of Houston is the greatest football city. Those from out-of-state and non-supporters of Houston may have differing opinions, luckily everyone is entitled to their beliefs and feelings which can make for good conversation and spectator sports.
I remember that run and the coolest thing was me and my friend that I graduated high school with ran that race together and it was a fun time but the weather was a pain but I enjoyed the heck outta of it
Running with a friend is a nice way to pass the time during the run . . . weather during runs can be a pain at times yet learning to accommodate to certain weather conditions makes us stronger mentally and physically. Thank you for taking the time to comment!
Thanks Don! I consider the "stops" more of "little breaks" while running half marathons . . . it gives me an excuse to catch my breath and capture the scenery around me to share with others. Thank you for taking the time to comment! : )
Thank you Lisa Uhrig Brady! It was a pleasant surprise to read all the wonderful comments about the video on the 'Run the Bluegrass' Facebook page last night, then wake up this morning to over 930 views AND 15 Likes on the video . . . I am use to a very slow moving view count on my videos and an average of 2-5 Likes. Definitely made my morning and comments such as yours really brighten my day. HUGS!
Dang that looks miserable! Those are some pretty sweet temporary medals! Man that's costing them a lot of money - for those medals and then to mail out the real medals once they finally arrive.
Hey Ann! The temporary medals were nice to have . . . I do wonder about the additional expenses they have to deal with ($$ for temporary medals and then the cost of mailing out the medals) . . . I wonder if races such as these have some sort of insurance to deal with this . . . or if they factor in the cost of registration to cover potential issues as what happened with this race. As for the weather conditions, it wasn't too bad . . . I really dread COLD runs, but with my leggings, a long sleeved thermal running shirt + long sleeved thick running shirt + thin running jacket, I did get hot by about mile 2 . . . I ended up tying both my jacket and thick running shirt around my waist. Thin head covering on my head helped keep my ears from getting cold along with the head visor kept the slight rain out of my eyes.
Looks like a good race! (Except maybe for that 'mountain' at mile 10) Makes me want to do it! Because of the timing I doubt I will. (I like fall marathons, and then stopped running through the holidays.) Will recommend this to friends that train for January races. I'm planning on doing the Mayflower brewery half marathon in Plymouth Massachusetts on June 14. Will be the first time I've flown somewhere to run a half. The race goes past Plymouth rock and the Mayflower replica. Thanks for continuing to create and post these great videos!
Ann, It was a well organized race. Luckily I was able to maneuver myself around the corrals (I studied the start line map the evening before) as each corral started their wave - it helped pass the time and allowed for a couple of photo op's for the video. I don't particularly like standing in the corral with a bunch of people for a couple of reasons, one being that I am vertically challenged and I can't see what is going on. The 'mountain' at mile 10 was exhausting! J/K. : ) Thank you for taking the time to comment! : )
Thanks for posting!! This is such a fun race. And weekend. I e-mailed the Pleasure Pier this morning to see if next year they would offer a runner discount. Already got a reply that they'll look into it! :-)
I enjoyed the challenge of the hills. It is hill country . . . but that one special person I went with saw MOUNTAINS instead of hills . . . and stated after the run "I got altitude sickness on those hills!". That special person I went with is a Drama Queen. I think I need to write a book about the crazy things HE says. ; p
Thanks for sharing your video. Was a bad race for me -- actually got HAILed on when coming back over the bridge! 3rd time running LaPorte & I like it less & less each time - think I'm done with it! (But will go & volunteer)
Ann! Hail?!?!? Wow! Last year was very warm (I think it was last year). This year the temperature (59 degrees) was perfect for the run. I could have done without the sporadic rain, but grateful it wasn't in the 40's and raining. It you volunteer rather than run it next year, have that sign "Touch here for Power" at MILE 8 . . . : )
Running Daisy The power sign guy was gone when I went back through! Was joking with the other people at that water stop that I was doomed now - I needed a power boost!
Gokuflip, I did see your video! Nice! In addition to carrying my Canon PowerShot, I should have carried my GoPro too, luckily I had a ziploc bag to protect my camera during the rainy parts of the run. : )
Ann, the Clear Lake Half was cancelled and this was the closest half nearby . . . plus, once you run over one bridge you realize they are NOT the same. Easy going up the initially time over the bridge, but then when we made the U-Turn to head back over, WHEW, it was tough! ; )
Yes Runner Gib as 10 AM approached rain picked up as I waited at the finish line watching others come in - then it seems like all of a sudden the cold front move in - Brrrrr!!!!
Yes! It was especially Brrrrrrrr after crossing the finish line and waiting for others to come across the finish line - the body quickly cools down after running 10 miles, especially in weather we experienced that day. : )
Hello SWohioFILMS, I haven't done any Spring 1/2 M's in San Antonio - the only 1/2 M I could find online is the Alamo 13.1. You might want to consider: 1) Austin 3M 1/2 M (mainly downhill). 2) TX Marathon (includes a 1/2 Marathon) my favorite part = TX-shaped finishers medal. The run sells out fast. No video of 3M 1/2. If there is a destination other than SA you are open to visiting check out Austin or Kingwood or see the videos I have posted of any TX 1/2's I have on my channel. Best wishes!
I do not personally like the RnR events but I wanted to come down and run in San Antonio so I could check Texas off of my list. I see that there is now a spring half marathon and was wondering if you had also ran this.
