No educated European in the late 15th century - the time Columbus sailed - thought the Earth was flat. The ancient Greeks had even somewhat accurately calculated its circumference in the 200s BC! Columbus was trying to prove instead that there was a shorter route to the spice-rich lands of Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean, not thinking there were any continents in the way. I like how apparently no one until the early 2000's did even the most rudimentary amount of research regarding the whole flat Earth myth at the time of Columbus' voyages.
