I didn't tell my son no...but we had a blow up over the simple chores I ask him to do...take the trash out then he knows it's full and not letting it overflow on the floor...feed the cat...do your homework before video games...drink bottles on the bedroom floor etc. He decided to not just talk back but legit started talking s***. This has been going on for months like a broken record and he finally decided to be an ass about it. I snapped. Mind you I've raised him for 15 years on my own. He's old enough to know better. He's currently sitting outside on the porch. No phone. No laptop. Nada. If you want to keep it up.. get out of my house. You can come back in when it's time for bed. I can deal with having a conversation about disagreements...but I have a limit to what you can get away with saying if it's mean and disrespectful. At that point...conversation over. I'll admit that I have spoiled him. And I've let him get away with being lazy all these years. Now I'm having to come up with creative ways to drive the point through. I'm tired of repeating myself so since he knows to clean the litter box once a day I'll be shutting off the water at the main valve to the house. If he wants to take a shower or flush his toilet he can clean that litter box first and then I'll be happy to turn the water back on. Since he decided to slam his bedroom door I'll be taking that too. And before anybody says anything about it he has his own bathroom and it has a door so if he needs privacy he has an option.

I define back talk as disrespectful, surly language. I’m totally fine with my teenager respectfully disagreeing with my decision about something. Sometimes they even change my mind. I think it’s important to reserve hard no’s for the really big stuff, but to allow a bit of wiggle room with the small things.

So what do you do when your child is told to come home and they refuse to listen? They say please you say no and leave it at that and they think you just gave up because you stop responding and they still don’t come home

Decent adults encourage kids to talk back and stand up for themselves. Are you hoping the next Hitler will give you Brownie points for training the next generation of citizens ready to endure dictatorship? Rhetorical, that's exactly what you're doing.

An accusation of backtalk is worse if the accused is an adult. Children should have the right to be honest with their parents without being accused of talking back.
@davidhill8565
@davidhill8565 2 года назад
Backtalk is not disagreement or truth-telling. It’s being rude in how you do it. Parents, if you force your child to accept your word as law, your child will have a shaky belief system, poor communication skills, and low self-esteem. I’d rather question when there’s something amiss than to give blind credence to people with a shady character.

Explanation to 5 year old: Sorry, no we can not go to the store for the 11th day in a row to buy you a new toy for the 11th day in a row -- Mommy and Daddy need to be able to make money to buy food and pay the mortgage. After you have given your kid options, e.g. they can cry, yell, or scream in their room or be civil and stay downstairs -- like their 4 year old younger brother who understands perfectly -- but they refuse and also begin to tell you what you can and can't do after 10-15 warnings... e.g. "No, you go to your room!" and/or throws tantrums by throwing or kicking things is another matter. Discipline has to come into play.

My daughter acts right when she is in my home. When she goes to her fathers house it’s typically ok, but there are those infrequent times where she forgets who the boss is. I give her free reign (within reason) as long as she pulls her weight. Making grades, working part time, now having her own car. Well, last night she lost her damn mind. Ty for this video. I needed this before I opened a dialogue with her about her behavior Last night when “she decided” she would stay at her fathers house after he gas intentionality made her late for school (senior year). I appreciate your words of affirmation. Much love.

This is my problem...I keep tying to give evidence. Happened tonight with my 16 yr old daughter. And when I tell her not to talk back, she says, "I'll I said was... I'm not talking back." It soooo gets on my nerves that she doesn't understand what talking back is. Ugggg!!!! 😡 When I was younger, if I talked back to my parents, I got smacked from my dad. She's lucky I don't believe in that type of punishment. What can I do to get her to understand and stop talking back?

Important to teach children this: “No means no.” Parents don’t have to continually allow children to argue their case. Parents/adults are the authority figures. All people must learn to respect the word “No”, even if they disagree. This is how we learn to be respectful adults. I cannot stand it when grown up people cannot take “no” for an answer. They learned this at a young age. THANK YOU for discussing this topic.

Thanks for your video I really needed this today. I am trying living with my partner and his teen children and it’s been changing. I have always been able to connect with my own nephews and nieces. I feel very comfortable communicating and it’s always very positive. I know it’s a whole different dynamic but I don’t think I was really ready for some of the challenges. I’m feeling a little powerless and told not implement consequences but don’t feel comfortable with there behavior. I’m feeling backed into a corner. Anyway, thank you for your video because it was able to bring me back to a place of empathy and realizing the girls my also be feeling powerless.

Never respond to backtalk with violence or threats of violence, especially murder. Never respond to backtalk with a 911 call. Never respond to backtalk with a heavy hand. Never indoctrinate children into a religion that ticks most of the boxes of the BITE model. Act to the effect of defining backtalk as if it has to with how one says it not what one says, or else you’re indoctrinating your child. If a child is defending him or herself from an accusation and you accuse the child of backtalk, you’re a kangaroo parent.

these kids today have to be taught not to talk back and disrespect their adult leadership whether it's in the classroom or on a school bus. Child today was visibly seen tearing pages out of her math book. Last day of school today she was ready to trash the school bus or throw paper out of the window. unacceptable behavior. But these are the things that are going on with some of our kids today, (5th graders, some). 5th graders today know how to get under your skin today by talking back unnecessarily, and think it's okay, not. Makes your wonder if proper etiquette and respect for adults is even being taught in our schools today. These are the things that will allow them to be successful in life, period. We baby boomers know that better than anybody. r2d2, round top.

I don't get this whole "DONT UNDERSTAND JUST OBEY ME" mentality. I was always made to father my 4 siblings. They would obey me out of mutual respect. I listened, they listen and they considered my judgment rational even if they didn't like it. They just ended up secretly hating/hiding things from my mother in the end because she had this, " obey me" mentality. They don't have a good relationship with her.

I received a letter that says “We are concerned about your child’s attendance. _______ believes there is a high correlation between attendance and class achievement. As of this date, our records show your child has a total of 13 unexcused absences. ________ and/ or General Statutes of NC require that we notify you of the number of unexcused absences your child has accumulated at this time. _________ attendance policy states that an Elementary student who is absent 20 days and a middle school student who is absent 15 days may be retained (held back). The high school policy states a student is allowed 7 absences per semester on the 8th absence a student may be retained. No consideration is given as to whether the absences are excused,unexcused or out of school suspension. All absences will be coded unexcused and unlawful until a written note is received from the parent or guardian. If you have any questions, please call the school.” Can somebody tell me what to do I’m in 8th grade and this is my worst fear idk what to do and I don’t wanna show my mom because she’s gonna make me go back to school 😢😢😢

Jesus Christ this is possibly good for really young kids, but this is awful for parents of teenagers. My parents never give explanations for anything and expect us to follow their orders. We're not machines, we're real people with real feelings and emotions. We are expected to act like adults while being treated like children.

The biggest issue I am having is with my 11 year old son. I ask for him to sit down at the table and he will say no,"I need to drink something." I will say,"there's water in the fridge." He will say,"Water is literal hell and I will not drink it I ONLY WANT SODA." He will refuse to sit at the table, refuse to drink anything, Like a complete tyrant, this behavior has been escalating and my husband and I are both fed up with it.If we ask him to do his homework or workbook, he will say,"I'm muting you, well now I cant hear you." and completely ignore both my husband and I. My husband has gotten so angry with this and he was raised with the belt so he thinks spanking my son who refuses to behave, to listen, to everything. He has an attitude about everything even things like brushing his teeth, waking up early, I mean just everything if he doesn't get the right sauce for his food he goes into a complete meltdown or refuses to eat. Anyone dealt with this? He is not on the spectrum or has any disorder to our knowledge but this behavior has us very concerned. We have taken away his privileges and have refused to give them back until he can change his attitude. Anyone have any advice for us?

Give your son two choices that you and your husband can live with. Son wants soda. Give your son the option of flavored sparkling water or juice. Son doesn't want to sit at the table for dinner. Give your son the option to eat somewhere else in the house, losing something he likes for a period of time or eat at the dinner table. Good luck.

@@kaywashington7284 I hear what you are saying but why give him options of sparkling water and juice and choosing to eat somewhere else? Plain water is better than those 2 options and he needs to sit at the table. Maybe they dont want their child eating all over their house dropping crumbs. Sometimes you dont get /cant have a choice.
